In the past week, the townships historical commission and planning commission have both voted to recommend approval of Main Line reBuilds plans for the Gothic Revival structure and its parsonage at 120 E. Athens Ave.
In other action this week, the planning commission also recommended approval of preliminary plans of land development for projects that will bring significant change to two locations in Bryn Mawr. One is a new residential development on Old Lancaster Road near Bryn Mawr Hospital and the other a commercial development on the former Verizon Lot on Lancaster Avenue that would fill a longstanding gap in the business district.
First Baptist Church of Ardmore
Falling vacant as its congregation could no longer support it nearly three years ago, the First Baptist Church of Ardmore was one of the prime movers for a church conversion ordinance in Lower Merion.
When a developer-buyer sold the 1-acre parcel to Main Line reBuilds partners Mac Brand, Scott Brehman and Tom Harvey this summer, it came into the hands of a group already dedicated to adapting these community landmarks. Other current projects include the United Methodist Church of Narberth and Odd Fellows Hall and Gladwyne Methodist Church in Gladwyne Village.
Following Lower Merions new conditional use process, the partners have agreed to list the church property as a Class 2 historic resource on the townships inventory. A public hearing on action to make its protected status formal is scheduled for the Nov. 19 meeting of the board of commissioners.
Also in connection with the project, a conditional use hearing is scheduled for Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m. before the townships Hearing Officer. A preliminary plan of land development for a four-unit conversion of the church building, retaining the parsonage as a fifth condominium unit, will be before commissioners in December.
At a meeting in September, the historical commission had endorsed in concept the residential conversion. Following up at a meeting Oct. 27, members reviewed in detail architectural changes Main Line reBuild has proposed to make the building suitable for residential use. Key changes include converting the basement into a garage with eight parking spaces, adding a driveway from St. Pauls Road to access the garage, and adding a front porch and rear two-car garage to the parsonage. For a specific potential buyer, the plan also includes installation of an ADA-accessible ramp on the St. Pauls Road side of the church.
Primary sources of interest for the commission were proposed replacement of portions of the stained glass windows and the addition of dormers on either side of the roof to provide windows and light for living space on a new second floor. Continued...

Bird B Gone, the leader in bird control products for commercial, industrial and residential applications offers a highly effective woodpecker deterrent for commercial and residential properties called BeakGuard.
Every year, woodpeckers cause considerable damage to commercial and residential property, particularly during the fall seasonSeptember 22nd and to December 21st. Many common woodpeckerslike the downy, hairy, and northern flickersare attracted to natural wood exteriors and occasionally stucco. The birds will aggressively drill into cedar, redwood siding, plywood, pine, fir or cypress. Woodpeckers will even peck at metal gutters, downspouts, chimney caps, TV antennas, rooftop plumbing vents, and metal roof valleys. Besides drilling for winter roosts, woodpeckers looking to feed on insects can create long, narrow furrows following horizontal or vertical seams or along window frames. The damage can be major and costly to repair and repaint. Holes can often be 2-3 inches in diameter. Its important to proactively discourage woodpeckers or they will gather in greater numbers. Pellet guns, poisons or other lethal means to get rid of woodpeckers is prohibited by the North American Migratory Bird Act, which regards these birds as a federally protected species.
Bird B Gones BeakGuard Woodpecker Deterrent is humane, effective and highly recommended for both commercial and residential applications. It can be used by pest- and bird-control professionals as well as by painters. The elastomeric acrylic finish communicates a warning signal to woodpeckers that discourages them from attacking vulnerable areas. It covers latex-painted surfaces, wood, fiber-cement, stucco, aluminum or vinyl. The compound won't harm woodpeckers or other birds, yet its durable, long lasting, resists dirt pick up and endures heavy weather. The formulation creates a vapor permeable, flexible membrane that keeps its color. BeakGuard is easily applied with a brush, roller, paint pad or ordinary spray equipment. One gallon covers approximately 180 square feet. Currently available colors include Nova White, Sand Stone, Whetstone and Portabello as well as custom colors on request.
Bird B Gone is the worlds largest manufacturer and distributor of bird repellents and bird deterrents, providing effective and humane solutions to a bird-free environment. The company provides advice, training and installation services for those who need help with these and other bird control measures.

Employees work inside The Building Center on Jenkins Dairy Road in Gastonia, which is in the process of a $500,000 expansion project at the site.
How do you know the housing market continues to recover? Try the recent expansion of a local building supply company.
The Building Center recently launched the second phase of its four-year expansion plan, President Skip Norris said. The more than $484,000 project will install more than 6,000 square feet of space at its Jenkins Dairy Road building in Gastonia, which Norris said will be used to create and store additional roof and floor trusses produced by the company.
Norris said the companys local expansion plans began last year with the installation of 10,000 square feet of storage space for building materials. Next year, portions of the property will be raised to allow for the installation of better storm drains, and Norris said a new production facility will open at the site in 2016.
Our business made it through the downturn in housing, and we feel like were in a pretty strong position right now, Norris said. Were projecting an increase in sales over the next year at roughly 20 percent.
The region lost some of its building supply companies during the recession, Norris said, which offered his company a chance to grow as the market started to rebound. The company has expanded some of its current facilities, like the one in Gastonia, but its also expanded to new markets, most recently Burlington and, later this week, Mebane.
Founded in 1977, The Building Center has six locations throughout North and South Carolina. It opened its Gastonia location in 1997. It offers framing, treated and engineered lumber, trusses, roofing, siding, windows, custom entry doors, millwork, railing systems, decking, columns, hardware and other supplies.

Another member of the Manning family gets to take on rising star Andrew Luck.
In each of the last two years, Andrew Luck faced off with Peyton Manning in some of the most ballyhooed (and enjoyable) games of their respective seasons. Luck gets his chance at the younger Manning brother when his Indianapolis Colts take on the New York Giants.
The Colts began the season off slow, dropping their first two games behind the frustrating offensive game plan of Pep Hamilton. While some elements of that approach remain (Trent Richardson still receives more carries than the far superior Ahmad Bradshaw), the offense has taken off behind the transcendent play of Luck. And for much of the season, the Colts' defense has stepped up, holding opponents to 17 points or less four times.
Likewise, the Giants didn't rush out of the gate. Due in large part to the slow installation of Ben McAdoo's West Coast scheme, New York looked lost offensively in its first two games. The offense picked up steam soon after as Eli Manning and the Giants went off for 30 points or more for three straight weeks. Though the team lost each of its last two games, it remains in the hunt for the playoffs.
In his third year, Luck has come into his own as a quarterback. While he still makes his fair share of bad decisions as exemplified by his nine interceptions, Luck led the NFL in touchdown passes heading into Week 9 with 22. He also topped the league in passing yards with 2,731. The primary beneficiary has been T.Y. Hilton, a speedy, undersized wideout who has registered a league-leading 866 receiving yards.
Manning is off to one of the best starts of his career. Though only a career 58.8-percent passer, Manning is completing passes at a clip of 64.9 percent this year, the best mark of his career. He's also throwing far few interceptions (five) and more touchdowns (14) through half a season than he has at any point as a professional. The Giants' leading healthy pass catcher is Larry Donnell, who sits just 5 receiving yards behind the injured Victor Cruz for most on the team.
Ahmad Bradshaw - Though Richardson remains the starter in Indianapolis, Bradshaw has definitely separated himself as the Colts top back. He leads the team, averaging 4.9 yards per carry and is on pace for 12 receiving touchdowns, the most by a running back in NFL history.
Odell Beckham Jr. - Despite missing the first four games of the season, Beckham has made quite the impact on the Giants offense. Since returning from injury, Beckham is averaging a touchdown a game. More importantly, his presence stretches opposing defenses and opens things up underneath for the tight ends led by Donnell.

When it comes to installing siding, you've got a variety of material to choose from. The materials you choose and the square footage to be covered are the biggest factors affecting cost.
Steel holds its color and dents less. While it costs more, it saves you money over its lifetime. Often the siding is coated with durable PVC to handle extreme climates found in the north and south. Having this coating means not having to paint the siding very often, as it retains the color through the harsh winters and summers.
Aluminum siding is the cheaper option of the two. The siding fades or appears chalky after a few seasons. It also dents easily should hail or heavy rain hit it. It's often used on manufactured homes because it saves money. The cost to you will come should you need to replace a piece of it, since oftentimes you can't find an exact match to the one on your home. This type of siding works best in beach areas as compared to steel, since the latter will rust in that climate.

Victoria Day opening for Aquatarium -
October 24, 2014 by
Mr HomeBuilder
The people behind the Aquatarium now have a firm date for the facility's spring 2015 opening.
We can say with some credibility and some definitiveness that Victoria Day will be opening day, Tony Barnes, chairman of the facility's steering committee, told city councillors earlier this week.
Bill Rogerson, the Aquatarium's executive director, had previously promised a revised opening date between March and May of 2015.
The new date was only the latest in a series of delays in the opening of the interactive tourist attraction, previously slated to open on the June 2013 weekend of the Tall Ships Festival, then bumped to World Water Day last March 22.
City officials hope the $21-million Aquatarium, now being built at the foot of Broad Street adjacent to the Tall Ships Landing condominium tower, will be Brockville's signature tourism attraction.
Council members this week seemed concerned about the new opening date, noting, among other things, the incomplete roof.
Mayor David Henderson said Thursday that reaction was not skepticism, but caution.
He added he wants to ensure the steering committee is building in enough leeway to make sure that we are not over-promising.
This is one area where it has consistently happened, said the mayor.
Barnes acknowledged there is some siding and some roofing on the building that remains incomplete, but that's not the real potential worry.
