Install Vinyl Siding – Lowe’s Home Improvement: Appliances … - December 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

If you're looking to improve the look of your home without the painting, vinyl siding is a popular, affordable choice. Many homeowners and builders choose it because it's long lasting, durable, inexpensive and relatively easy to install and maintain. Vinyl comes in a variety of grains, thickness and colors making it also a practical choice for many homeowners.

    1.Allow for expansion and contraction.

Vinyl Siding must be nailed so expansion and contraction are not restricted. Siding must be cut in lengths to provide for expansion. Allow a 1/4 in. gap for expansion wherever siding butts accessories. Allow 3/8 in. when installing in freezing weather (below 40).

    2.Choose the right nails.

Nails should be corrosion-resistant galvanized, stainless steel or aluminum roofing type nails with a head diameter of 3/8 in. The nail shank diameter should be 1/8 in. and long enough to penetrate into nailable base at least 3/4 in.

    3.Do NOT drive nails tight.

Allow approximately 1/16 in. between nail head and vinyl. This will permit expansion and contraction as well as prevent dimpling, which causes waves in siding. [fig. A]

    4.Center nails in slots.

Do not nail to the extreme right or left of nail slot in siding panel. [fig. B]

    5.Drive nails straight and level.

Rebuilding, rebranding Eddys Resort - December 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe is nearing completion of a major redevelopment of the Eddys Mille Lacs Resort on the western shores of Mille Lacs Lake in Onamia.

The redevelopment, anchored by a new lakeside hotel and restaurant, is meant to position Eddys as a world-class resort and restaurant on the lake, says the band.

Construction is scheduled to be done before the 2015 spring fishing opener. As far as the projects developers are concerned, the timing couldnt be better.

Mille Lacs Lake, long known as an ideal place to wet a line, is being rebranded as a destination that offers more than good fishing, said Joe Nayquonabe, CEO of Mille Lacs Corporate Ventures, the projects developer.

Its actually a great recreation lake, too sailing, canoeing, kayaking in the summer and kite boarding in the winter, Nayquonabe said. We realized that we needed to play a part in that rebranding and bring new amenities to this area. Our opportunity was a rebuild of Eddys Resort.

The band isnt disclosing the cost of the project. But the construction cost for the hotel and restaurant is $10 million, according to a Mille Lacs County building permit.

Amenities include 64 new hotel rooms, a Parlour suite, and two- and three-room cabins north of the resort across the access road. The new space will offer a large meeting room, a restaurant, a marina, and a retail/bait shop, he said.

One big change includes moving the building closer to the lake so visitors can better enjoy the views. Previously, a parking lot stood between the hotel and the lake.

You are not looking at the parking lot and the lake; you are looking at the lake, said Darin Engelby, project manager for PCL Construction in Burnsville, the projects builder.

The project, designed by Minneapolis-based BKV Group, comes at a time when the Mille Lacs Band is diversifying its investments.

    Vinyl Siding Installation Tips

Vinyl siding is just about the most popular exterior building material in use today. It is used in vast quantities in the remodeling market as people replace old aluminum siding or cover wood siding maintenance nightmares. Over two billion square feet of vinyl siding is produced each year in the USA.

This number is expected to rise significantly because of the arrival of the new solid core siding product. People who were previously turned off by the look of vinyl may be attracted to this product. Rising energy costs will undoubtedly cause more builders to use this siding to make their homes more energy efficient.

Vinyl siding is not too hard to install but it takes a little skill, proper equipment to get you and the product up in the air, and some layout skills. You need to be able to look forward and above you to see how you are going to deal with certain details on the home. You must always be aware of drainage paths and protection of the framing lumber. Water can get behind vinyl siding and it must not be allowed to touch any wood!

Guess what? The number one problem with vinyl siding is improper installation! Over 99 percent of all problems can be traced to installers. Unfortunately, many installers use unskilled laborers to install the product. Or, some builders allow untrained individuals to attach it to walls and gable ends. While it is not a hard product to install, there are many things you need to know if you want a professional installation. Here are several of the most important aspects of installing vinyl siding:

    Required Tools

Vinyl siding requires some very basic tools. If you are a DIY'r attempting this project you probably have many. Here is a list of tools that will help you complete the job: Hammer, level, tape measure, chalk line, circular saw with a fine blade (saw blade will be installed backwards on the saw!), utility knife, tin snips, framing square, caulk & gun, drill (optional), cutting/sawing table, ladders and misc. other staging equipment. You will need some specialty tools as well such as a snaplock punch and a nail slot punch. A zip unlock tool may also come in handy.

    Surface Preparation is Critical

The surface to which the siding will be applied must be as smooth as possible and solid. Now is the time to seal energy leaks. Caulk all cracks around windows and doors at this time.

How many of the vast sea of poppies at the Tower represented the contribution of the South African forces who died in … - November 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The ceramic poppies commemorating the dead of the First World War are being removed from the Tower of London. Each of the 888,246 flowers represented a member of the British or Colonial armed forces killed during the conflict.

With British focus so firmly on the trench warfare for which the war is so rightly remembered, the other conflicts that made this a genuinely world war have received little, if any, attention. How many British school children have been instructed on how the Japanese fought alongside the Royal Navy, or captured German islands in the Pacific?

The war in Africa has also been all but ignored. Just how many of the vast sea of poppies at the Tower represented the contribution of the South African forces who died in the campaign to take the German colony of what is today Namibia? Yet the fighting in what was then German South-West Africa had major repercussions for the entire region.

In August 1914, just days after Britain declared war on Germany, the South African prime minister, Louis Botha, sent a telegram to London offering to assist the war effort. On the face of it this was an extraordinary decision. Botha had only signed his own peace treaty with Britain 12 years earlier, at the end of the Anglo-Boer war the most costly conflict Britain had fought since the fight against Napoleon. Yet here this Boer war general was offering troops to his former imperial enemies.

By the end of August the first shots had been fired along the Orange River, the boundary between South Africa and Namibia. The conflict should have been a push-over. Germany had only 5,308 Schutztruppe or protection forces in the colony. South Africas newly formed Union Defence Force mobilised a force more than ten times this size with over 67,000 men.

But the fighting the vast, desert terrain was intense.

The South Africans managed to lose the first confrontation. At the oasis of Sandfontein they ran into well-organised German forces who managed to force the ignominious surrender of the South African officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Reginald Grant.

Although no more than a setback, the battle for Sandfontein, just north of the Orange River, had major repercussions. Many Afrikaners were already deeply unhappy about supporting the British when the Germans had assisted then during the Boer war. Now they saw their opportunity.

Manie Maritz, in charge of troops in the Northern Cape, was ordered to mobilise his forces. But instead he contacted the Germans across the border and won their support for transforming South Africa into an independent Boer republic.

Other Afrikaner Generals joined the revolt. General Christiaan Beyers the Commandant-General of the Union Defence Force was among the rebels. It is sad that the war is being waged against the barbarism of the Germans, Beyers wrote in September 1914. We have forgiven but not forgotten all the barbarities committed in our own country during the South African War. His reference to the deaths of 26,000 Afrikaner women and children in the British concentration camps during the Boer war resonated with many of his people.
