ARCHBOLD In its empty rooms, the Grime Homestead spins history like a storyteller.
And like a detective seeking clues, Tracie Evans listens.
Curator of collections at Sauder Village, she hears the snippets from the past and the promises for the future as crews tackle the beginnings of a 1920s-themed, three-phase project at the popular living-history destination location in Fulton County.
Plans call for renovation of the 1910 homestead and the creation of a rural community and a Main Street where guests will have ample opportunities to experience the stories, activities, and structures related to a defining era in Ohio and American history.
On a recent winter day, the homesteads stark, stripped-to-the-bones interior was a jarring scene to guests who had visited the homestead in the fall when the cozy place buzzed with chatter of school children taking tours. Near a rustic stove, the spicy aroma of fresh-baked molasses cookies had wafted a welcome.
No doubt, new ideas are coming to the front burner to reshape and update the conversations, the educational activities, and other programs when the homestead reopens this spring. Because of extensive work yet to be done, exterior and interior, no official opening date has yet been set, staff said.
Upgrades to the homestead part of the original farm property where Erie Sauder founded Sauder Village four decades ago include installation of new siding, windows, and doors as well as a new heating and cooling system, perimeter drainage, and an ADA-accessible ramp.
Homestead renovations will showcase the beginning of modern times with the addition of a wall telephone and a Victrola, for instance. Period-appropriate wallpaper, carpet, furnishings, and artifacts will be added, and interpreters on staff will share updated information and will wear costumes specific to the 1920s.

Even in a part of the world where tangled alliances are as common as sweet tea, one would be hard-pressed to find a country where the same few sweltering square miles house the sprawling operations hub for a huge U.S.-led air war and provide plush sanctuary to the likes of the Taliban and Hamas, both deemed terrorist groups by Washington.
Perched on a tiny peninsula protruding into the Persian Gulf, Qatar is dwarfed by neighbors such as Saudi Arabia, but has displayed outsize foreign policy ambitions, with the ripple effects of its immense natural gas wealth being felt from the mosque minaret to the executive suite, and on battlegrounds from Libya to Syria and beyond.
The emirate's goal may have been to heighten its influence and prestige by extending a cordial hand to all, but falconry-loving Qatar has lately seen its wings clipped, facing bruising rebukes from its powerful neighbors and Egypt over its long-standing support of Islamist groups, some of them militant ones.
Qatari officials used to have a favorite phrase, that the emirate was punching above its weight. Now the watchwords may be more along the lines of quiet retrenchment.
Amid what had become a rapidly deepening diplomatic isolation in the region, Qatar has scrambled to get back in the good graces of the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council and to mend fences with Egypt, the Arab world's most populous country and its traditional intellectual center.
The emirate has made symbolic steps such as the never formally acknowledged ejection of seven Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood figures, who departed in September for Turkey. It has also moved to stem the flow of funds from wealthy private donors to extremist militantgroups, some via what had heretofore been lightly regulated charities.
Neighbors Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, which had withdrawn their ambassadors in a highly public sign of strong displeasure, announced two months ago that they would send their envoys back.
Egyptian officials suggest that President Abdel Fattah Sisi, who was infuriated by Qatar's support for toppled Islamist President Mohamed Morsi, may soon be ready to resume high-level contacts. The likelihood of rapprochement increased recently after Qatar acceded to Cairo's demands to shut down the Brotherhood-boosting Egyptian arm of the emirate's flagship broadcaster Al Jazeera, itself conceived as a projection of Qatari power and prestige, but whose influence has waned in recent years.
Despite conciliatory gestures, however, analysts say Qatar has not wavered in its core belief that political Islam the view that austere Muslim teachings should guide all aspects of society remains the prime long-term force in the region.
Qatar has faced Western pressure over material support it has provided for some radical factions battling Syrian President Bashar Assad, including Al Qaeda-linked Al Nusra Front, and for siding with a self-proclaimed but not internationally recognized Libyan government aligned with Islamist militias from the western city of Misurata.

One U.S. military veteran will be given a new fully furnished 2015 NextGen Home, which will include LP SmartSide treated engineered wood siding products donated by LP Building Products. The sponsorship demonstrates LPs continued commitment to supporting wounded U.S. veterans through various programs and initiatives.
Attendees at the 2015 International Builders Show (IBS) and Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) will have the chance to view half of the showcase home on display from Jan. 20-22, 2015, in Las Vegas.

TORONTO While most homeowners dont give much thought to whats behind their walls, proper insulation is of key importance to having a comfortable, healthy home. Besides keeping your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer, insulation can help lower your energy bills, prevent mold growth and also keep unwanted noise out.
Insulation helps keep outdoor air from getting inside your home and conditioned indoor air from escaping. This is achieved by trapping pockets of air and slowing down the in/out process.
In winter, heat flows directly from all heated living spaces to adjacent unheated attics, garages, basements, and even to the outdoors, the U.S. Department of Energy states on its website. Heat flow can also move indirectly through interior ceilings, walls, and floors wherever there is a difference in temperature. During the cooling season, heat flows from the outdoors to the interior of a house.
The Canada Housing and Mortgage Corporation (CMHC) compares a properly insulated house to dressing for the weather.
A wool sweater will keep you warm if the wind is not blowing and it is not raining. On a windy, rainy day, wearing a nylon shell over your wool sweater helps keep you reasonably dry and warm. A house is similar, the CMHC website says. On the outside, underneath the brick or siding, there is an air barrier that does the same thing as the nylon it keeps the wind from blowing through. Then there is the insulation (like your sweater) and a vapour barrier, which helps keep moisture away from the house structure where it can do damage.
Insulation is rated based on a measurement of resistance the material has to the movement of heat. This is most commonly referred to as an R-value. The higher the R-value the more effective the insulation is. Local building codes list recommended R-values for each area of your house (these R-values are required for new construction). Improper installation of insulation can lower the R-value of the material you are using so its a good idea to follow the manufacturers instructions or hire a professional to do the installation.
Cold floors and walls in the winter and hot inside air in the summer, mold growth, high energy bills and uneven heating or ineffective cooling are all signs of a poorly insulated home, according to the CMHC.
There are many different types of insulation available. The type you use depends on where youre insulating or what R-value you require. Below is a rundown of the most common types of insulation used in homes these days.
Fibreglass: This is the pink stuff most people think of when they think insulation. Fibreglass in batts is available at most home improvementcentres and is easy to install, offering an R-value of 3.0 3.7 per inch, according to the CMHC. Loose-fill fibreglass is also available, but requires to be blown into the space youre insulating and should be installed only by a professional in order to get the most benefit from it.
Mineral fibre: Like fibreglass, mineral fibre in batts is easy to work with and available at most home improvementcentres (this is usually a sturdier material with a brownish colour). While mineral fibre has a lower R-value (2.8 3.7 per inch, according to the CMHC), benefits include better fire resistance and sound-proofing capabilities. Loose-fill mineral fibre is also available, but like loose-fill fibreglass, it should be installed only by a professional as well.
