Cedar Siding Prices and Pictures – Buffalo Lumber - November 14, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

You KNOW you want Cedar Siding or you wouldn't be here. Do you know what it really takes?

Our job is not to just sell you wood. Our job is to make sure you understand what you are getting into so IF you do buy CEDAR SIDING it meets or exceeds your expectations!

Western Red Cedar Siding & Paneling Delivered Mill Direct To You!

    DID YOU KNOW?

99% of all reported cedar siding FAILURES are Selection, Installation and Maintenance related. Which means that 99% of your wood's performance depends on YOU!

Your IMMEDIATE and LONG TERM costs are affected by the grade, pattern, texture and finish buying choices you make!

Your IMMEDIATE Installation costs are affected by planning for air space, sealing all 6 sides, protecting siding at job site AND your installer's experience!

Your LONG TERM maintenace costs are affected by your choice of surface texture, finish product and willingness to check every year that your siding is still protected from the elements!

1x6 THIN BEVEL CLEAR AYE&BTR Grade - Mill Pre-Finished with TWP Natural #1530 home in Florida

Your choices in Cedar Appearance affects your IMMEDIATE and LONG TERM costs!

#1 GRADE: Clear vs. Knotty: The most significant question is Do you like knots?. Knotty wood costs half as much as Clear. In today's market that translates to $4-$5 a square foot for Knotty, $8-$10 for Clears. How do you like Knots now?

Clear Cedar $9.50 - $10.50 per SQFT Delivered

Near Clear Cedar $8.00 - $9.00 per SQFT Delivered

Mill Select Cedar $4.25 - $4.75 per SQFT Delivered

Customer Select Cedar $3.75 - $4.25 per SQFT Delivered

#2 SIZE & PATTERN: We can mill almost any size and pattern you want. You should know that any size over 1x8" is prone to cupping while smaller sizes require more labor to install. Certain patterns like Bevel can be less expensive than T&G or Ship-Lap because the specific mill cut makes better use of the original board.

#3 FINISH (Application & Duration): Your immediate cost will depend on paint vs stain, specific brand and number of coats needed. LONG TERM; Transparent finishes need to be re-applied every 1-2 years, Semi-transparent stains 2-5 years, Semi-Solid 3-7 years, Solid-Stain 7-10 while paint can last up to 25 years. Mill Pre-Finish runs 50 to $1 per square foot per coat.

#4 TEXTURE (Rough vs Smooth): Texture directly impacts your long term costs because rough face holds more stain than smooth. Rough face on average will last at least one year longer before requiring maintenance than smooth texture. Because stain soaks into rough texture more evenly the colors are richer and more consistent.

MOST IMPORTANT! Whatever grade, pattern, finish appearance choices you make you HAVE to coat ALL sides and edges prior to installation to ensure against ROT. If you are going to do the job right you can not do it better or cheaper than the mill's factory pre-finish machine!

ShipLap, Dutch Lap, Channel Lap Patterns

In the last few years a modification to the standard Shiplap "Flush Joint" profile has gained in prominance. Sometimes called Nickel Gap, Shadow Gap, Shadow Profile, Shadow Line and Small Reveal this is a custom milled shiplap profile that includes a narrow gap where the boards overlap. When installed a "shadow" effect is created. The diagram below outlines the joins between the installed boards. "G" is the custom milled gap which can vary based on the "shadow line" emphasis the customer is looking for - but is usually narrow often only 3/16 - 3/8 inch.

Tips on Installing Vinyl Siding | Home Exterior Projects … - November 8, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Maintenance Free

Vinyl siding is tough, durable and maintenance free. It needs nothing more than a rinse from a hose to keep it clean and you never have to paint again. It's a great way to keep your house maintenance free and enhance the look of it.

There are certain materials that you can leave on the house if it's in good shape. However, the best job that money can buy would be to take off what's there, get back to the sheathing, put a house wrap on it, foam and then apply the vinyl siding.

When measuring your house for siding, do not deduct for windows or doors. Measure it like it's a square from the width -- from the bottom to the top of the peak.

Hanging it from one ladder is extremely difficult. You are dealing with very flimsy pieces. You need at least two ladders and a trusted friend, and if you can get a scaffolding system, that would work even better.

Snap a level line all the way around your house and make sure it's level. The first piece of vinyl you're going to hang is on the starter strip. It will be made of aluminum and it usually comes about 3 inches in width and 12 feet long. It is important to check your level every four or five courses by putting a level on the siding.

When cutting vinyl siding, it's usually to go into a corner. You need to leave at least 1/4". Whatever your measurement is, take at least 1/4" or 1/8" on both sides for the panel to slide back and forth. If you don't cut your siding short, when it expands in the summer it's going to buckle.

Always start from the back of the house and work forward toward the street, so seams are now facing the backyard. Make sure you overlap where you have a joint only when necessary. It's important to use the factory edge at the seams. It assures that you get the proper overlap.

This is one of the most crucial steps in installing vinyl siding. Never nail the siding to your house, hang it. Set your nails about 1/8" to 1/16" away from the wall. You are not going to set it hard. This will allow movement when it expands or contracts.

When heat builds up in your attic, it can warp your roof. Let that heat escape and keep an even temperature. Vent out your attic by installing perforated soffits with gable vents. Another added bonus would be to get ridge vents that will add airflow through the attic space.

Your grill will be your siding's worst enemy. The heat it generates will damage your siding and you will have to replace it. Keep the barbecue as far from your siding as possible.

Thanks to better graining and deeper profiles that cast wider shadows, some vinyl, plastic, and synthetic siding gives you the look of wood for a fraction of what you'd pay for the real thing.

Buy the Right Amount An installer will calculate how much siding your home needs, but you can make a rough estimate without climbing a ladderand avoid overpaying someone you hire. Simply multiply the height times the width of each rectangular section of your house in feet, going by what you can measure from the ground, to determine its area. Multiply the approximate height and width of gables and other triangular surfaces and divide each total by two. Then add all the totals. To allow for waste, don't subtract for doors, windows, or other areas that won't be covered. Finally, divide the total square footage by 100 to estimate how many squares of siding you'll need. A square represents 100 square feet.

Get It Installed Right We recommend having a professional install your siding. If the old siding is sound, new siding can go over it. But rotted wood siding should be replaced and the wall behind it checked for damagesomething that could save you tens of thousands of dollars in structural repairs later on. If the old siding is removed, install a moisture barrier beneath the new siding, and add flashing around doors and windows. Fasteners should attach to wall studs, not just the sheathing. The installer should center the fasteners in the slots and leave a gap as thick as a dime between the panel and the fastener heads to allow for expansion and contraction.

Make It Last You can extend the useful life of your siding with simple maintenance and repairs. Siding is susceptible to leaks, especially where it meets windows and doors. A $5 tube of caulk could ultimately save you thousands of dollars in structural repairs. If you live in a region with cold winters, check the siding under the eaves for water stains, possibly a sign of ice damming. Adding attic insulation and sealing any gaps around pipes and ducts into the attic may help prevent future dammingand may lower your heating and cooling bills as well.

The weather conditions in the Bucks and Montgomery County region can test any homes exterior components. Thats why DENNIS & SONS Roofing strongly recommends routine maintenance be scheduled for every home. Older roofs, in particular, are subject to damage from high winds, snow, and ice buildups. When the time comes and a new roofing system is needed, we strongly recommend using superior products designed to deal with the regions varying weather conditions.

Did you know that roofing today is actually a fairly complex system that includes multiple components? The materials used for modern roofing systems are superior to the rather simple roofing strategies of the past. Today, your roofs decking can be protected by a material that allows moisture from attic areas to escape while preventing wind-driven rain from penetrating. Systems from GAF, for example, can also include leak barriers that provide additional protection from extreme weather conditions and ice damming. That means your home is better protected throughout the life of the system. The high-quality shingles used are greatly improved when compared to traditional three-tab shingles typically used. Of course, trim components like the ridge cap are designed to look good and hold up extremely well under our weather conditions.

Fiber Cement Siding Installation Tips: Fiber Cement Siding - October 2, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

Fiber cement siding is not that difficult to install if you have some basic information. One of the most important facts and really obvious is to follow your fiber cement manufacturers instructions that has been formulated based on their product and specifications.

Make sure the wall or surface is prepared to receive the cement siding. Make sure that the windows, doors and openings have been flashed all around their perimeter.

Also check if your manufacturer requires a weather resistive barrier.

Fiber cement siding should be kept covered while not been installed on a clean, flat and leveled surface. The siding must be protected from direct exposure to weather that could damage the cement siding before it is installed. If you need to move siding pieces, be sure to carry them by its narrow edge and support it when you cut larger pieces.

Fiber cement siding must be cut face down with a diamond tip blade. When an irregular cut is needed, a jigsaw equipped with a medium or course-grit carbide blade can be used. A diamond jigsaw blade will be useful too.

Nails used to hang fiber cement siding shall penetrate at least 1 into the studs or the structural framing. Remember that the siding is hard so be sure the nails are located at the right place before driving them.

If the cement siding is to be installed over wood sheathing (7/16 OSB or plywood at a minimum), it is recommended to use a 6d nail. Sometimes, if you are trying to drive the nails and you are having problems, you can pre-drill the holes to facilitate the job. Siding can be installed over wood and metal studs.

These studs shall be a minimum 20 gauge, 3-5/8" C-studs. Fasteners shall be flush to the surface material. Do not counter sink or angle fasteners. When blind nailing, place nail 1" down from the top of the board; and when face nailing, place nail 3/4" up from the bottom

It is important that the insulation product used when installing fiber cement siding, will be able to level the wall and align each siding panel properly. When you add insulation to the siding, the customers energy bill will be reduced too, so you might want to highlight this as an additional benefit for your client. Fiber cement siding should be installed over plywood, OSB, or sheathing. Be sure that the siding installed is dry, otherwise it might shrink at butt joints. When sheathing is the preferred surface that will receive the fiber cement siding, or any other fragile substrate, be sure to pre-drill the holes at corners to prevent accidental damages. Building codes will normally require installing siding over water-resistant barriers and nailed into the studs every 16 or 24 inches.

When installing fiber cement siding be sure to leave at least clear space between the siding and the flashing Vertical siding should be installed and attached to the structural framing when a non-structural sheathing, gypsum board or foam-type sheathing are used. When you are getting close to the final grade, leave at least 6: between the bottom of the siding and finish grade, and a minimum of 1 above roof lines and decks. Fiber cement siding shall have a 1/8 gap between trims of windows and doors. If you need to cut cement siding a 100% acrylic latex primer must be used to reseal the surface. Install all butt ends/joints in contact with one another.

Be sure to caulk, paint or finish fiber cement siding following manufacturers recommendation. By doing this you will be making sure that the siding is ready to withstand changing weather conditions. Caulk around windows, doors, trims and self-flashing penetrations.
