Suspect arrested in string of church shed burglaries - January 21, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Published: Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at 7:19 p.m. Last Modified: Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at 7:19 p.m.

Property crimes detectives with the Marion County Sheriff's Office have arrested a Silver Springs man in connection with burglaries at several church sheds.

Detectives picked up the suspect, Steven James Swanson, 42, on Sunday in the 8300 block of North U.S. 441, and the investigation carried over into Monday, according to the MCSO. In total, Swanson faces 12 charges, including burglary, grand theft, possession of burglary tools with the intent to use and dealing in stolen property.

Detectives said Swanson broke into at least five church sheds in various areas of Marion County, including Anthony, Citra, Orange Lake and McIntosh. They also are looking to see if he may be connected to at least four similar burglaries.

Swanson is wanted on two warrants from Levy County for church shed burglaries there.

Marion County sheriff's officials said Swanson told them he would sell the stolen items leaf blowers, riding and push lawnmowers, and weed trimmers to support his drug habit.

The burglaries began in December and continued through Sunday.

Deputies said Swanson burglarized Forest Evangelical Lutheran Church, at 1663 SE 183rd Ave. Road in Silver Springs on Sunday. From there he went to the nearby Winn-Dixie and to a real estate company, where he entered a trailer and where detectives caught him.

According to the Sheriff's Office, he told detectives that he burglarized the church shed and admitted to going into several other sheds on church properties. Detectives recovered burglary tools and items taken from other churches.

Local court records show Swanson has a conviction from 2011 for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Senex Energy sheds 30 staff as part of cost cutting - January 21, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Senex Energy has shed 30 employees and will reduce capital expenditure by 20 per cent in the 2015 financial year, as part of cost-cutting in the wake of the plummeting oil price.

The redundancies, comprising about 15 per cent of the mid cap oil company's staff, were made on Tuesday with immediate effect, Senex managing director Ian Davies told investors on a conference call.

"It's regrettable that in times like this these things need to happen," Mr Davies said on the call, arranged to discuss Senex's response to the slump in oil prices and its December quarter results.

"We expect to ride the peaks and troughs of this market."

Mr Davies said Senex had reacted rapidly to the price plunge, putting in place hedging to protect cash flows through the rest of this financial year and making cost savings amounting to $6 million a year on an annualised basis.

Capex in 2014-15 will be reduced $85 million to $90 million, down from the original budget of $100 million-$120 million, with higher-risk exploration spending being delayed and the focus going on investment that enhances production. Just 16 wells will be drilled in the 2014-15 drilling program, down from 26. Production guidance for the full year of at least 1.4 million barrels of oil equivalent isn't affected.

Mr Davies had been flagging that Senex would tighten its belt in the wake of the plunge in global crude oil prices to their lowest level since April 2009. The price weakness has already caused larger rival Santos to slash $700 million from its capex budget for the 2015 financial year, while Woodside Petroleum also advised last week of cutbacks.

"We have a very large portfolio of growth projects with long-term tenure," Mr Davies said on Wednesday. In this environment, we must continue to show discipline in the prioritisation of these projects.

"The right sizing of our spending program, in combination with our recently implemented hedging program, will ensure we preserve our strong funding position and exit FY15 in a strong net cash position."

Chinese man missing in West Auckland - January 21, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Police

An elderly Chinese man who went missing while on a walk in Auckland two days ago has been found dehydrated, but otherwise well.

Wang Dao, 74, went for a walk in the Green Bay area on Monday morning.

He was found today collapsed on the doorstep by the owner of a Swanson Rd home, apparently after travelling about nine kilometres.

Dao was checked by ambulance staff, and though dehydrated he was otherwise well and did not need to go to hospital, police said.

A police search and rescue team had scoured Wang's two usual walking routes, as well as a number of public areas, parks and streets yesterday.

The police Eagle helicopter was also called in to help.

He was fit and healthy but was not familiar with the area and did not speak English, police said.

Dao had no cellphone or access to money and did not know anyone in the area.

Police have thanked the public for their help in finding him.

Search continues for missing Chinese visitor - January 21, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Waitemata Police are asking people in the Green Bay area to check sheds and garages as the search for a missing Chinese gentleman continues.

Mr Wang Dao, a 74 year-old visitor from China, hasn't been seen since leaving his Bishop Street address at 11am on Monday to go for his usual walk.

Mr Wang is fit and healthy but doesn't speak English, and has no money or cellphone.

On Tuesday a Police Search and Rescue team scoured the two routes Mr Wang normally took, as well as searching a number of public areas, parks and streets.

The Police Eagle Helicopter will continue to do sweeps of the shoreline today and Search and Rescue will assess any further possible search areas.

"We've had several members of the public call us with sightings and we're working through those as we get them, but at this time Mr Wang remains missing and we'd ask anyone who lives in the Green Bay area to check any sheds, garages or outbuildings that they may have" says Sgt Marianne Dempster, Waitakere Police.

Anyone who may have seen Mr Wang or knows where he is should call 111.

Nonprofit: Eastwood film sheds light on plight of the sniper - January 21, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    HENDERSON, NV (FOX5) -

In its first weekend, director Clint Eastwood's American Sniper has earned a record-setting $105 million at the box office.

A nonprofit group devoted to aiding military snipers is pleased the film is bringing attention to the difficult situations faced by many of the sharpshooters.

American Snipers was created 13 years ago by a small group of police snipers who wished to help their military counterparts. They raise money for snipers who in some instances have to pay for their own equipment and have it shipped to them by their families.

"There was certain gear that they didn't have when they were being issued certain types of weapons. We can get them things like laser rangefinders so they can figure out their distance," David Agata with American Snipers said.

American Sniper recounts the story of Chris Kyle, a Navy SEAL who proclaimed to be the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history.

"The time it takes to train, the time it takes to shoot, the minimal strength you have to have to do your job and still maintain your family - most people don't have to deal with that," Brian Sain with American Snipers said.

Sain said snipers get a bad rap, many people considering them cold-blooded killers.

"If someone was holding a knife to your throat or your child's throat, you need someone with the mental stability to make a lawful, legal decision to use deadly force to stop that person from hurting an innocent," he said.

"It's easy for certain voices to speak out and criticize, but until you've walked in someone's shoes who's there to protect you, you can say what you want," Agata said.

Apex garden sheds, fully fitted garden buildings - January 20, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Our raft system with its simple common sense approach offers you an excellent alternative to the more tradition concrete or slab base. This method allows more air flow, also much less water is in contact with the floor bearers keeping the building dry, which makes your investment last longer. No foundation needs to be dug, or concrete to set, means we can finish laying the raft and erecting your building the same day. Not only does this simple system saves you money and is kinder to the environment, it is easy to reposition if you need to relocate you building, saving you breaking up the old concrete and disposing it.

To install a raft we ask of you is to ensure the area is leveled out for us prior to us arriving, we will place slabs at pressure points to prevent subsidence and bring the area to a level, a raft is then placed on top, ready for the shed to be built, simple. Example shown below.

LinkedIn sheds elitest image by widening career network - January 20, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

LinkedIn is hoping that it can attract blue collar workers like carpenters, electricians, delivery drivers, waiters and joiners.

After a few years out of the workforce to care for his youngest son, Klaus Thorsen spruced up his LinkedIn profile. Not that unusual, you may think. After all, the careers networking site has more than 330m registered users.

Except that Mr Thorsen is a north London carpenter hoping to find contacts and employment on a site where job titles such as builder are more typically used to describe someone who creates online communities than a construction worker.

Mr Thorsen admits he would never have joined LinkedIn if it were not for his partner, Karen Fugle, an executive coach to architects. If youre not in the corporate world its a big step, [it's] baffling, she says. That is not to say Mr Thorsen does not use technology; he is an enthusiastic Twitter user, deploying it to keep up with industry news and finds work through referrals from local websites such as Streetlife. com, a neighbourhood social network.

If LinkedIn has its way, however, more people like Mr Thorsen will become members of the site without nudges from executive coaches and expand the numbers beyond the throngs of accountants, lawyers and marketers already signed up, to include delivery drivers, waiters and joiners.

Allen Blue, co-founder of LinkedIn, wants the site to shed its elitist image as an exclusive club for knowledge workers. LinkedIn last year bought Bright, a US job site that uses a scoring mechanism to match job hunters with employers. The acquisition brought jobs to the site from sectors beyond LinkedIns traditional white-collar heartland.

Now if you do a job search, there are lots of possibilities, says Mr Blue. Theres a growing number of blue-collar workers on the site.

The company certainly talks big. There are billions of workers in the world, says Mr Blue, and LinkedIn has ambitions to sign up every single one of them. We consider all of these [AS]people we can deliver value to, says Mr Blue. Moreover, data compiled from LinkedIn members profiles could, for example, help employers plan where to build a factory or distribution centre based on the local labour forces skills, he argues.

LinkedIn hopes to create the worlds first economic graph, its version of Facebooks social graph, coined to describe its networks of friends. As Jeff Weiner, the chief executive, has explained: We want to digitally map the global economy, identifying the connections between people, jobs, skills, companies and professional knowledge and spot in real-time the trends pointing to economic opportunities.

While LinkedIn is, in Mr Blues words, professionally paranoid about Facebooks plans to create a professional networking channel, called Facebook at Work, he believes users prefer to keep personal and work lives separate.
