Theres Now an Onion That Doesnt Make You Cry - February 10, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

TIME Newsfeed food and drink Theres Now an Onion That Doesnt Make You Cry *sheds tears of gratitude*

A U.K. supermarket operator claims it has introduced the ingredient that many home cooks have been longing for: a no-tears onion.

Asdas website says the onion, called an Asda Sweet Red, has been selectively bred to have lower pungency levels than regular onions, meaning fewer tears will be shed when chopping and the odor wont linger on your breath for quite as long.

The onion has been 20 years in the making and was developed by British farmer Alastair Findlay of agricultural co-operative Bedfordshire Growers.

Findlay tasted some 400 to 500 bulbs every season in order to select those with lower pungency. His colleagues are presumably glad that his experiments are now at an end.

For Valentines Day, chemistry sheds light on chemistry - February 10, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Valentines Day brings feelings of love, passion and sometimes resentment. It stands to reason that not every couple will end up happy ever after, but can science detect the signs before we get in too deep? Some studies dig into machinations of relationships and get to the bottom of what many of us overlook every day.

Every year, approximately 2 million Americans tie the knot, according to data from the National Vital Statistics System at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Some social scientists say a number of those marriages will be unsuccessful. In psychologist Ty Tashiros 2014 book The Science of Happily Ever After, he points out only 3of 10 marriages remain happy and healthy as a couple.

The divorce rate has not been increasing for a long time, said Lori Cluff Schade, a Utah-based licensed marriage and family therapist. It has actually gone down a little because people are getting married later or not at all.

Its still not good news for marriage. In 2012, the Journal of Marriage and Family concluded that marriage, compared to long-term relationships of couples who live together, shows small benefits. According to the study, there is a chance everyonehas been looking at relationship success through a small lens. Health gains were correlated with marriage, but, it argued, that may be due to Medicare as opposed to the relationship itself.

There is a huge expectation placed on relationships these days, especially with the media that we have at our disposal. We see a lot more of other peoples relationships, said Madeline McGill, a College of Arts and Sciences sophomore. The way youre broadcasting adds a certain amount of, Oh I need this. It doesnt necessarily mean that couples arent happy. I just think if we see someone elses relationship, you cant help but compare your relationship to theirs.

A lot of research on the subject comes from John Gottman, who in 1986 founded his Love Lab at the University of Washington. From his years of research, he has discovered the physiological difference between masters and disasters of relationships.

What he [Gottman] found is that couples who make it have five positive remarks for every negative remark in a conflict situation, said Leslie Brody, professor of psychology at Boston University. He brings couples into the lab and asks them to talk about an issue they disagreed on. The couples who ultimately dont get divorced are making 20positive remarks for every negative in calmer moments.

Gottman discovered couples destined for failure would shift into a fight or flight mode. When they were in the lab being asked about their relationships, their bodies were rapidly responding. Each person was ready to be attacked by their significant other. The couples who were destined to last were reporting calmer physical signals.

McGills boyfriend, Boston College senior Collin Fedor, shared his view on fighting in relationships.

SEVEN Sheds will make the pilgrimage to Festivale in Launceston at the weekend for the fifth time and brewery owner Willie Simpson said there was sure to be some surprise brews among the kegs.

Mr Simpson said in addition to its staple items of Kentish and Paradise pale ales, the brewery would also be serving up its limited-edition Black Inca dark ale as well as a new pilsner brew.

The pilsner has been developed with another North-West Coast producer but its ingredients will be kept under wraps until a launch later this week.

"We always have our staples but people like to try new things so we always try and bring something new," Mr Simpson said.

Black Inca is a dark ale brewed with Anvers Fortunato No. 4 chocolate and Kindred Organics quinoa and is a black beer with chocolate undertones.

Mr Simpson said going to Festivale was usually a great experience and a good way to market the brand and get exposure.

"It's really about the thousands of people that come through the gates, but we're a business so most of the time you spend there you're pouring beers," he said.

Seven Sheds Brewery and Cape Grim Water join forces to create clean, crisp pilsner - February 9, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

PILGRIMS will flock to Railton to get the chance to sample the latest offering from Seven Sheds' brewer Willie Simpson, who has teamed up with Cape Grim Water to create one of the cleanest and crispest beers in the world.

PILGRIMS will flock to Railton to get the chance to sample the latest offering from Seven Sheds' brewer Willie Simpson, who has teamed up with Cape Grim Water to create one of the cleanest and crispest beers in the world.

Pilgrim Pilsner is the first pilsner created by Seven Sheds and has been made with Cape Grim water, located on the West Coast.

A pilsner is a pale ale that is characterised by its crispness and cleanliness.

It has distinct honey flavouring and is best paired with "clean" foods, like seafood.

Cape Grim Water has what they describe as a "rain farm" on the West Coast that collects the cleanest rainwater from the south-west of the state with large black plastic sheets.

The company collects the water when it's blowing on the wind from the south-west.

The south-west has the cleanest water and air in the world because it's untainted by any human industry for thousands of kilometres.

Want your start-up to be successful? Choose a short name and move to these cities. - February 9, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Want to launch a start-up? Consider moving to Silicon Valley, near a university -- and keep your companys name under three syllables.

Those are the takeaways of a new study published recently in Science from M.I.T. business professor Scott Stern and doctoral candidate Jorge Guzman, who studied the growth of 1.5 million new firms in sunny, disruptive California.

The early indicators ofstart-up success, they found, are fairly obvious: Firms that formally register, seek capital investment, establish patents and attract media coverage early tend to have higher growth potential. Proximity to prominent research institutions -- like Stanford, Caltech and the University of California Berkeley -- also boosted favorable outcomes.

This combination of factors turns out to be a very useful diagnostic for separating out the types of businesses that have a reasonable chance of growing, Stern said, versus those that are much less likely to grow.

But branding matters, too: Businesses that include the name of a founder tend to fare worse, the study found. And firms with short names -- Snapchat, Twitter, Tinder -- are 50 percent more likely to grow than those with long ones. (Budding entrepreneurs: You could always consult this Hipster Business Name Generator.)

The research sheds new light on where the highest-quality start-ups flourish. Thats useful for local, state and regional policymakers the authors wrote.

Start by playing to your areas strengths. Not everyone should try to be Silicon Valley. Theres no one-size-fits-all policy, Stern said. What we find across a wide body of research is: You want to focus on how to leverage your environment for facilitating economic performance. Identify whats unique and distinctive about a region. Extend that.

Stern and Guzmans California investigation examined a decade ofstart-up data. They used a roster of start-ups born between 2001 and 2011 from the states official business registry, identifying high-growth features in some firms and testing the results against others.

They also mapped out entrepreneurial hot spots -- the hottest being, unsurprisingly, Silicon Valley. Americas disruption factory spawns a disproportionate number of successful start-ups, crushing the lowest-ranked California cities by a factor of 90 and the median cities by a factor of 20.

As far as cities go, the San Francisco start-up scene ranked among the most prosperous.
