A HOUSEHOLDER has been left devastated after his shed was destroyed in an arson attack.
Chris Holt, who moved into his rented cottage in Berkeley Road in Astley Bridge four weeks ago, was left stunned afterthe attack last night.
Police are now investigating the blaze, which also badly damaged his neighbour's shed just after 11.20pm on Monday.
Mr Holt was watching TV when he heard what he thought was rain outside.
When he went to investigate he saw a "huge orange light" filling his garden.
He said: "It was bright orange and I had no idea what was on fire.
"It's lucky really because if I had not have been off on Tuesday I would have been in bed and it could have spread a lot further in another few minutes.
"A couple of years ago the lady down the street had the same thing happen to her. Why would a bunch of kids be out that late?I hope it's not a vendetta."
Mr Holt, who works for E.on in Horwich, had moved from Bromley Cross.
He added: "I thought I had moved into a nice cottage with a lovely garden, and now it looks horrendous."

A new study by a linguistics professor and an alumnus from The University of Texas at Austin sheds light on a well-known linguistic characteristic of autistic children their reluctance to use pronouns paving the way for more accurate diagnostics.
Pronouns words such as you and me in English are difficult for children with autism, who sometimes reverse them (for example, using you to refer to oneself) or avoid them in favor of names.
Richard P. Meier, a linguistics professor in the College of Liberal Arts at UT Austin, and Aaron Shield and Helen Tager-Flusberg from the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Boston University, examined whether the same applied with American Sign Language.
Previous research attributed these pronoun hiccups to language confusion or echolalia automatic repetition of noises or phrases. But, a first-ever study on the use of pronouns by native-signing children requires new theories, Shield explained.
Our work suggests that the opacity of pronouns in English and other spoken languages is not at the root of the problem, said Shield, a UT Austin Linguistics alumnus and lead author for the study. We suspect, though more work is needed, that people with autism may differ in their experiences of selfhood.
The crucial difference between signed and spoken language is that pronouns are points with the index finger toward oneself or others rather than spoken words that do not give learners any clue as to who they refer. Nonetheless, deaf children with autism avoided pronouns, preferring signed names.
For example, when shown a picture of himself, a child with autism hearing or deaf is more likely to say that is Johnny rather than thats me.
This is interesting because it shows that children with autism have difficulty with pronouns, regardless of whether those pronouns are spoken or signed, and regardless of whether the pronouns make their referents transparent, said Shield.
Deaf children with autism did not tend to reverse pronouns as hearing children with autism tend to do. This is clinically important because most existing screening and diagnostic instruments for autism ask parents and clinicians about pronoun reversal.
This research has great clinical significance for the deaf community and for educators of deaf children, Meier said. It helps us to better understand the linguistic markers of autism in all children, deaf or hearing, signing or speaking.

NAOURS, France A headlamp cuts through the darkness of a rough-hewn passage 100 feet underground to reveal an inscription: "James Cockburn 8th Durham L.I."
It's cut so clean it could have been left yesterday. Only the date next to it April 1, 1917 roots it in the horrors of World War I.
The piece of graffiti by a soldier in a British infantry unit is just one of nearly 2,000 century-old inscriptions that have recently come to light in Naours, a two-hour drive north of Paris. Many marked a note for posterity in the face of the doom that trench warfare a few dozen miles away would bring to many.
"It shows how soldiers form a sense of place and an understanding of their role in a harsh and hostile environment," said historian Ross Wilson of Chichester University in Britain.
Etchings, even scratched bas-reliefs, were left by many soldiers during the war. But those in Naours "would be one of the highest concentrations of inscriptions on the Western Front" that stretches from Switzerland to the North Sea, said Wilson.
The site's proximity to the Somme battlefields, where more than a million men were killed or wounded, adds to the discovery's importance. "It provides insight into how they found a sense of meaning in the conflict," said Wilson.

Chautauqua has laid claim to being anointed the best sprinter in the world after scoring a TJ Smith Stakes win that verged on the impossible.
On a day dominated by leaders, Chautauqua settled last in the elite field of 10 and powered down the outside to nail Lord Of The Sky in the final bound.
The two horses currently rated the fastest racehorses in the world, Terravista and Lankan Rupee, were left in his wake in finishing third and ninth respectively.
"Superstar horses do things you don't expect them to do and he did that today," co-trainer Michael Hawkes said
"He's just gone up another cog again. He could be anything really."
Chautauqua is likely to get a chance to add to his Group One tally with John Hawkes nominating the All Aged Stakes on the final day of the Sydney autumn carnival as a target.
Tommy Berry picked up the mount on Chautauqua in a win which could usher in a new era for the young jockey.
A long-time stable jockey for Gai Waterhouse, Berry has adopted a freelance role in the past few months and has become the go-to man for Hawkes Racing.
The new partnership enjoyed its biggest payday since then with Chautauqua's win in Monday's $2.5 million race.
It didn't come without some anxiety.

Brazils economy is expected to contract this year. But the biggest downer in the country is the enormous Petrobras Petrobras scandal that is pulling the rug out from under thousands of low skilled workers.
Civil construction is an important economic sector in any economy. That is particularly true in an emerging one, where governments and the private sector are busying building uproads and refineries.
But political scandal and wide spread white collar crime at Petrobras is damaging that sector something fierce. In the first two months of the year, 35,500 jobs were lost in civil construction, many of them low skilled labor.
This is a problem that has no end in sight. You wonder where many of these workers are going to go, asks Fernanda Lima, CEO of Gradual Investments, a $6.5 billion money manager in Sao Paulo. Construction company layoffs are going to weigh on the economy.
Petrobras is currently being investigated for a number of scandals. The biggest ones involve the oil giants gouging billions out of public coffers by allowing construction firms to over-charge for refineries. There were kickbacks paid. Offshore accounts were opened. A few guys got rich. A few guys went to jail. And now two of the companies involved in the scheme, OAS and Galvao Engenharia, have filed for bankruptcy protection.
Once loved by all, Petrobras is now the baneof Brazils existence as crisis leads to job destruction for over 30,000 low income construction workers.
Late last week, the Getulio Vargas Foundationthink tanksaid Brazil would lose an estimated $27.1 billion from potential GDP growth this year because of Petrobras cut backs and the impact those will have along the supply chain and, ultimately, in tax revenue to the state. The number included around $4.5 billion in tax losses from Brazils shrinking construction business alone.
Many construction companies are no longerreceiving government payments for work orders as Brasilia tries figuring out whether or not it is getting what it pays for. Petrobras caused unemployment to rise in civil construction, especially among those companies that were involved in building projects for them, Carlos Zveibil, president of the Sao Paulo Public Works Association told the Estado de Sao Paulo newspaper on Sunday. The economy is already fairly bad in a general sensebut this crisis is just another ingredient, he says.
In the northeastern state of Pernambuco, home to the questionable Petrobras refinery project known as the Abreu and Lima Refinery, work orders have ground to a halt. The project is still under construction, but not at the pace it was a year ago. The government is holding back payments. Nearly 90% of those people laid off werereleasedwithout explanationother than the investigation of fraud changing the project timeline. In Brazil, getting laid off without just cause is a lawsuit waiting to happen. And it is one laborers tend to always win.
In other words, the Petrobras scandal is like someone took a nuclear missile and exploded it in a sewage treatment plant.
