The colourful Waikawa Bay boatsheds have got a 15-year coastal permit but their owners won't be able to use them as makeshift baches.

A row of 22 boatsheds in Waikawa, near Picton, known for their quirky colour scheme will not be pulled down after Marlborough District Council granted them a coastal permit for 15 years.

The 50-year-old rundown boatsheds, north of the public launching ramp atWaikawaBay, are famed among photographers and painters for their striking colour palette.

A resource hearing committee said on Wednesday the sheds could remain on the condition they were not used for accommodation or business.

The sheds had come to the attention of council after some were found to be used as makeshift baches.

An inspection by a council resource management officer discovered many of the boatsheds didn't contain boating equipment. One shed was kitted out with a kitchen, cooker, fridge, shower, tables, chairs and a television.

Two sheds had ladders to sleepout platforms and one shed had an extension added with a chimney, water tanks and a CCTV camera, all without building consent.

Solar sheds some light on Cambodian students - April 9, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

"The aim of this action is to improve children's level of education," Laurent Talou, President of Lumires sur le Mkong, told CNBC's Sustainable Energy. "It has been proved around the world that children with access to light have a better academic level than those who don't," he added.

Cambodia is a country still coming to terms with the genocide committed by Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge during the 1970s, but when it comes to education, a concerted effort is being made to improve the system and engender reform.

A World Bank administered program, the Cambodia-Education for All Fast Track Initiative, has seen more than 1,200 classrooms built, 11,000 teachers trained, and 900 'early childhood education programs' established.

Yem Phal is a school director in Kambrodes, and has seen the benefits of the Lumires sur le Mkong project first hand. "Since students started using the Khmer Solar lamps at home, their studies have significantly improved," he said.

"They can study anywhere that suits them - under or outside their mosquito nets, in and under their houses or under the trees," he added.

"If we didn't offer them electric power for charging the lamps, they wouldn't be so keen on their home studies."

Sheds set ablaze in suspected arson attack - April 8, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A HOUSEHOLDER has been left devastated after his shed was destroyed in an arson attack.

Chris Holt, who moved into his rented cottage in Berkeley Road in Astley Bridge four weeks ago, was left stunned afterthe attack last night.

Police are now investigating the blaze, which also badly damaged his neighbour's shed just after 11.20pm on Monday.

Mr Holt was watching TV when he heard what he thought was rain outside.

When he went to investigate he saw a "huge orange light" filling his garden.

He said: "It was bright orange and I had no idea what was on fire.

"It's lucky really because if I had not have been off on Tuesday I would have been in bed and it could have spread a lot further in another few minutes.

"A couple of years ago the lady down the street had the same thing happen to her. Why would a bunch of kids be out that late?I hope it's not a vendetta."

Mr Holt, who works for E.on in Horwich, had moved from Bromley Cross.

He added: "I thought I had moved into a nice cottage with a lovely garden, and now it looks horrendous."
