U.S. crude settled about 1 percent lower on Thursday, but an apparent momentum towards a deal between Iran and world powers over its nuclear program and higher U.S. inventories offset supply shocks in the Middle East.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Wednesday that a deal between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries would be harder to achieve after a Nov. 24 deadline, suggesting a degree of urgency ahead of planned talks in Oman next week.
"If sanctions on Iran are eased, one needs to review once again the supply and demand balance," said Olivier Jakob of Petromatrix, a Swiss energy consultancy.
Iran a 'time bomb'for oil prices
Samuel Ciszuk, senior advisor on supply security at the Swedish Energy Agency, told the Reuters Global Oil Forum on Wednesday that he saw the odds of a deal or compromise being reached as "50-50".
U.S. crude futures for December delivery settled about 1 percent lower at $77.91 per barrel, down 77 cents on the day. Meanwhile, brent crude for was flat and slightly below $83 a barrel, after touching a high of $83.24 earlier.

U.S. crude inventories rose 460,000 barrels in the week to Oct. 31, Energy Information Administration data showed on Wednesday, albeit compared with analysts' expectations of an increase of 2.2 million barrels.
"U.S. domestic production is at its highest level ever, and imports are at their lowest for more than a decade - that's a bearish outlook in the short term," said Tamas Varga, analyst at PVM Oil in London.

Hundreds of blinking lights handed out to pedestrians, riders
When the clocks rolled back one hour on Sunday morning, the daylight Oregonians have been saving since April gave way to the darkness of Pacific Standard Time falling not long after 5 p.m. each day.
TriMet teams fought back the encroachment by handing out hundreds of blinking light clips and reflective stickers on Monday afternoon at the Beaverton Transit Center on Southwest Lombard Avenue, among other transit-oriented locations in the area. For the fifth consecutive year, the transportation agency teamed with the Oregon Department of Transportation and other community partners for the Be Seen, Be Safe campaign to promote pedestrian and bicyclist visibility and safety.
With three lighted hula-hooping women from Portlands Sparkle Movement spicing up the bustling transit center, TriMet representatives handed out safety lights and reflective stickers while encouraging people to brighten up their attire during the darker fall and winter months.
TriMet hands out about 1,000 blinking reflector lights, which include a clip to affix to clothing and backpacks, as part of its campaign.
We want people to be visible after dark, said Rhonda Danielson, a TriMet marketing coordinator. ODOT stats show that most pedestrian-involved crashes occur during low-light hours. The majority of people involved are those wearing dark clothing. Handing out the blinking lights is a reminder that safety is everyones responsibility.
Roberta Alstadt, a TriMet spokeswoman, noted that enhancing ones visibility helps bus operators see riders waiting for pickup in the dim light of early morning as well as twilight.
For operators, it can be really hard to see people at the stops, she said. It helps to have a light on and if you step up to wave. They dont want to pass up anybody.
Harry Dees, a TriMet operator on the 76 and 78 lines in the Beaverton area admitted it gets frustrating when riders dont do anything to compensate for visibility during the darker times of day.
Some people are dressed in dark clothes and dont move, he said. Theyre doing nothing to assist with getting (safely) on the bus. They stand there like statues and expect me to see them.

West Dublin residents have called on Irish Water to compensate them for damage to cars, the contents of garden sheds and garages after their homes were hit by flooding caused by a burst water main.
A number of residents in the Ashwood, Fonthill Road and Alpine Heights area of Clondalkin said the first they knew of the flood was when garda knocked on their doors at about 6 am.
While no homes appear to have been flooded, the water flowed inside a number of garages and parked cars at Ashwood Drive and flooded several garages and garden sheds at Ashwood Lawns which backs on to a green area where the water main burst.
The green between Ashwood and Alpine Heights was also flooded extensively.
Paul and Margaret Hanlon who live at Ashwood Drive said packaging on Christmas presents stored in their shed was damaged. But the presents were intact and the water did not flow into their home.
At Ashwood Drive cars belonging to Stephen and Bernie Lawlor were flooded. Ms Lawlor said she had mopped out a lot of water from the 2012-registered Renault, but seats were wet and a floor space was full of water.
Mr Lawlor said his Honda sports car had been badly affected by the water and he had jacked it up in an attempt to elevate the engine above the flood. Electrical equipment including a circular saw in the garage was yet to be tested as they were waiting for it to dry out, they said.
The Lawlors said the ground had appeared to bulge during the flood, with cracked pavements shifting and the garden wall moving. Garden gates no longer fitted and they said they would be looking at their insurance policy. But they insisted it should be Irish Water which compensates them for the clean-up and repair bill.
Water supply was restricted to a large part of Clondalkin for much of the day.

Wollongong police have asked residents to keep an eye on their garages and sheds after a number of domestic break-ins.
Wollongong police have asked residents to keep an eye on their garages and sheds after a number of domestic break-ins.
Police said expensive items including power tools, trail bikes, surfboards, golf clubs and motor vehicles had been taken from detached garages and garden sheds in recent months.
Reports provided by Lake Illawarra police suggest similar activity is occurring right through the southern part of the region as well.
Thieves broke into an Albion Park Rail garage on Saturday, stealing tools and a CB radio from a parked 4WD; while a gun safe was the target of a similar break-in at Flinders last week.
Other garages have been targeted at Gerroa, Dapto and Tarrawanna in recent weeks, with thieves taking ride-on lawnmowers, motorcycles and even dressmaking scissors.
Police have urged residents to secure their garages and sheds as well as their homes. They recommend security measures including window locks, deadlocks on doors, motion sensor lighting, security grills and alarm systems.
More information on securing your home can be found on the Crime Prevention page at police.nsw.gov.au.
