Papa Oo, 12, benefits from the Light a Candle Christmas Appeal. Picture:Rob Leeson Source: News Corp Australia
LIFE has been tough for brave Papa Oo, but her smile still lights up the room.
Born legally blind and deaf in Myanmar, all the 12-year-old ever wanted was to go to school.
Now, with the help of Vision Australia and a number of charitable Victorians, she is living her dream.
I love school, Im going again next year. Im really happy, Papa said.
Papa was raised in a Myanmarese orphanage, her CHARGE syndrome preventing her from ever going to school with the other kids.
But just over a year ago, she was brought to Melbourne on a medical visa by Sister Catherine Brabender to live with her new family, humanitarian Moira Kelly, miracle conjoined twins Trishna and Krishna and Iraqi-born brothers Emmanuel and Ahmed.
After one year, her English is nearly fluent and shes being supported through school by Vision Australia, and is now throwing her support behind their Light A Candle Christmas Appeal.
I like Melbourne, I like school, I like maths, Papa said.
She likes school so much that last holidays she walked to Our Lady Help of Christians primary and cried because the gate was locked, not understanding school was closed during holidays.

A HAMPSHIRE grandmother is half the woman she used to be after shedding ten stone in 18 months.
Marjorie Boyle has her knees to thank for her dramatic weight loss after she was told doctors could not perform a knee replacement due to her size.
The 63-year-old grandmother who lives in Fordingbridge now no longer needs the knee surgery either thanks to her new weight of 8st 13lbs.
She said: During my first knee replacement operation there were a few complications and afterwards my doctor advised me that they would not be able to replace the other knee as it was too dangerous due to my weight.
That proved to be the final straw for Marjorie who joined her local Slimming World group at the Avonway community centre.
I had tried every diet over the years and I didnt think this would work because you eat so much food but its not really a diet, its all about eating the right foods.
Marjorie who has dropped from a dress size 30 to a size ten, says she is enjoying a new lease of life.

Fish eye sheds light on color vision -
December 25, 2014 by

A fish eye from a primitive time when Earth was but one single continent, has yielded evidence of color vision dating back at least 300 million years, researchers said on December 23, 2014.
Analyzing the fossilized remains of a fish from the spiny shark family that lived long before the dinosaurs, scientists discovered light-sensing rod and cone eye cellsthe oldest ever found.
This is the first discovery of vertebrate retinal fossils, said Gengo Tanaka from Japans Kumamoto University, who co-authored the study in the journal Nature Communications.
It is rare for palaeontologists to find eye remains, as the soft tissue generally decays within 64 days, the authors of the study said.
However, the Hamilton Quarry in Kansas is a treasure trove of unusually well-preserved fossilsan entire ecosystem having been rapidly buried under sediment.
They included the extinct fish Acanthodes bridgeiamong the oldest known vertebrates with jaws.
It had a long, streamlined body and fins with spines, is believed to have lived in shallow, brackish water, and died out at the end of the Permian period about 250 million years ago when nearly 90 percent of species disappeared in the largest extinction in Earths history.
An A. bridgei specimen found at the quarry retained elements of the original eye color and shape, and a light-absorbing pigment in the retina.
The remains had been preserved under a thin coating of phosphate, Tanaka told AFP.
Analysis of the tissue provides the first record of mineralized rods and cones in a fossil, said the study.

Latest survey sheds light on how people define success.
High income and a family is thought of as the most important ingredients of success for a majority of country's working professionals surveyed, says a study by LinkedIn.

"It was interesting to see them realise and acknowledge the role of others in their network who help surface insights and opportunities which can play an amplification role in one's career," Rao added.
Although having a family was cited as the top measure of success, 33 per cent of the senior professionals in Asia Pacific said that leaving work to start a family is difficult.

In the following video, 3D printing specialist Steve Heller interviews Fred Fischer, director of fused deposition modeling and PolyJet applications at Stratasys , about the company's newest 3D printing products. It showcased them at last month's EuroMold, the world's largest 3D printing conference, held each year in Frankfurt, Germany. During the segment, Fischer also sheds light on what EuroMold means for Stratasys, as well as the importance of creating 3D printers that offer higher throughput.
Stratasys investors should expect that the company will continue creating products and services that fulfill its core value of "changing people's lives by revolutionizing the way things are made."
A full transcript follows the video.

Steve Heller: Steve Heller here. I'm joined today with Fred Fischer. He's the director of Fused Deposition Modeling and PolyJet applications at Stratasys. Thank you so much for being with us today, Fred.
Let's talk about EuroMold. Obviously, this is the conference where everything happens. How do you feel about this year's EuroMold, and what were some of the most surprising things that you've seen this year?
Fred Fischer: EuroMold for us represents one of the most important trade shows and events in our industry per year.
Every year I think one of the things that we're both proud of and impressed and slightly surprised about is really the overall turnout, the amount of attention that additive manufacturing is getting in comparison to all of the other technologies and items that are on display at EuroMold.
This year represents yet another step-function change in the amount of people and I'll say overall interest in our industry.
To me, if I had to say what's -- maybe it's surprising, but it's yet a continuation of a trend that we've seen before -- are the amount of prospects, or the amount of market that comes to us that already understands 3D printing to some extent, but maybe they don't understand all of the details and all the full capabilities.

Bush sheds light on Bush -

Now, the question becomes: What kind of candidate and, possibly, president would Bush be?
A good way to assess Bush today is to look back on his record as a two-term governor. A narrow defeat in a gubernatorial election in 1994 and eight years as Floridas chief executive have done much to shape his political philosophy.
But the way Bush is viewed now does not always jibe with his record as governor.
For example, criticism from Tea Party conservatives that Bush is too moderate is at odds with those who remember him as one of Floridas most conservative governors, cutting taxes for the wealthy, embracing anti-abortion and gun-rights legislation, privatizing state services, battling teachers unions and expanding school vouchers.
He personally inserted himself into the Terri Schiavo right-to-die case. He was a bilingual governor with a Hispanic wife who drew controversy for ending affirmative action programs.
Although he had a friendly Republican Legislature, he wasnt afraid to use his veto pen on pet projects and bills from lawmakers. He was tested in a crisis as a governor who had to face an unprecedented eight hurricanes in two years during his second term.
Bush was a proud policy wonk, delving deeply into issues and programs. He brought in national policy makers, leaders and writers to address his staff. He introduced Floridas first e-budget. His official portrait has his Blackberry within his reach.
Former state Sen. Dan Gelber, a Democratic legislative leader during Bushs tenure, said he and the conservative Republican governor were diametrically opposed on most of the major issues facing Florida, including education policy, abortion rights and tax cuts. Gelber said while Bush did not necessarily seek a challenge, he seemed to enjoy a lively exchange on his proposals.
I liked the give and take, Gelber said. I think he felt you wanted to test and challenge ideas.

Winter will officially begin at 6:03 p.m. New York time on Dec. 21.
That marks the point at which the least amount of sun falls across the northern half of the globe, and dark means cold.
Obviously with daylight pretty much absent in the northern latitudes, the days are getting very short and that is the nursery for our polar and arctic air masses, said Michael Schlacter, a meteorologist with Weather 2000 Inc. in New York.
In New York City, Dec. 21 will have 9 hours, 15 minutes and 16 seconds of daylight, according to Timeanddate.com. When the new work week begins, things will already be looking up because daylight will have increased by a second.
In Boston, the daylight on the 21st will be about 10 minutes shorter than in New York, while Chicago will have about seven minutes less. As depressing is that sounds to people who like sunshine, Torontos daylight only lasts 8 hours, 55 minutes and 43 seconds, which is still more than an hour of what will fall on London.
Well refrain from using the colloquial shortest day of the year because even Dec. 21 will have 24 hours.
The cold will wax and wane through the course of the winter for a variety of reasons. One is that after truly frigid air drops out of the Arctic into the more temperate latitudes of North America, it takes time to rebuild the supply.
Schlacter said for the U.S. to have a winter that lasts, cold snaps have to be interspersed with milder periods.
You dont want every week to be freezing cold if you want to have a long winter, he said. You have to recharge that Canadian freezer.
Snow on the ground can also influence temperatures. The suns energy is used up melting the frozen crust rather than heating the air.
