Aussie Dollar Touches One-Month High After U.S. Jobs Surprise - January 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Australias dollar touched a one-month high on prospects a report this week will show jobs grew for a second month, enhancing local assets' allure relative to the U.S., where labor data last week fell short of estimates.

The Aussie completed back-to-back weekly gains on Jan. 10, the first since August, as traders evaluated whether the U.S. data will affect the Federal Reserves decisions on further reductions in stimulus that has tended to weaken the greenback. Australias bonds rose, sending the benchmark 10-year yield to the lowest level since Dec. 18. The premium over shorter-dated notes narrowed as bets on rate cuts in Australia declined.

The data coming out of Australia has been stable to good and that needs to continue with the unemployment number later this week for people to reassess their rates outlook, said Derek Mumford, a director at Rochford Capital, foreign-exchange risk-management company in Sydney. If the Aussie can consolidate above 89.50, theres potential for a move higher.

Australias dollar fetched 90.10 U.S. cents as of 11 a.m. in Sydney, after reaching 90.15 cents, from 89.95 in New York on Jan. 10, when it completed a 0.6 percent weekly advance. It gained 0.2 percent to NZ$1.0852 and was little changed at 93.68 yen.

New Zealands currency was at 83.04 U.S. cents from 83.03 and fell 0.2 percent to 86.32 yen.

U.S. employers added 74,000 jobs in December, the slowest pace since January 2011, compared with the median forecast for 197,000 additions in a Bloomberg News poll.

Jobs probably increased by 10,000 in Australia following Novembers 21,000 gain, a separate survey showed before the Jan. 16 report.

Australias 10-year bond yield fell five basis points to 4.22 percent after touching 4.21 percent. The premium over three-year bond yields reached 1.23 percentage points, the least since Dec. 4.

Erie Holds on in Barrie for 6-5 Win - January 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

January 9, 2014 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Erie Otters Barrie, Ontario - The Erie Otters shook off losing a three goal lead in the second to pull away from the Barrie Colts 6-5 Thursday night at the Barrie Molson Centre.

The Otters were invigorated with the additions of Connor McDavid, Adam Pelech Dylan Strome and Andre Burakovsky, who joined the team today for their first game back following international play. Oscar Dansk also joined the club, but did not start.

Barrie jumped out to an early lead just 1:22 into the game when Brendan Lemieux tallied first. Erie Answered back with a pair of goals, one from Connor Brown and the other shorthanded from Michael Curtis, to take a 2-1 lead. Jake Dotchin tied the game on the power play at 14:57 of the first. Dane Fox answered back with a power play goal of his own just 20 seconds later to regain the lead. Curtis fired home another at the end of the period to give the Otters a 4-2 lead into the break.

The Otters were in a good spot after Connor McDavid scored another power play tally 33 seconds into the second period. Barrie wasn't going to give easily at home as a pair of goals in just 17 seconds would re-energize the team and building. Garret Hooey tallied first with a power play goal at 5:31 of the second. Then Tyson Fawcett made it a one goal game shortly after, chasing Devin Williams from the net after making 11 saves on 15 shots. Oscar Dansk entered the game, but became the goaltender of record after surrendering the tying goal to Cordell James late in the period.

After spending most of the second period on the penalty kill, the Otters finally got back to playing hockey at even strength. Using that to their advantage, Erie went to work. On the forecheck, McDavid handed the puck over to Andre Burakovsky, who then found a wide open Travis Dermott at the left point. Dermott walked in and blew the slap shot past Daniel Gibl, giving the Otter a 6-5 lead. The Otters fended off the Colts at the end of regulation for the win, despite being on the penalty kill and Barrie taking their goaltender off.

Andre Burakovsky recorded four assists on the night, extending his assist streak to 10 games. Dansk picked up his 17th win of the year. Erie will travel to Owen Sound to take on the Attack Friday night at 7:30.

Galvan presents plans for former orphan’s asylum - January 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Galvan Initiatives Foundation unveiled its plans for the former Hudson Orphans Asylum and a nearby building at Wednesdays Planning Commission meeting. Although the plan involves two buildings and two additions, each of two to three stories, Galvan attorney Joseph Catalano said uses have only been identified for a portion of the project, specifically, 10 studio apartments on Seventh Street.

Galvan owns a long-vacant three-story brick building at the corner of Seventh and State streets, vacant parcels adjacent to it on both Seventh and State and a vacant, one-story garage just beyond the vacant parcel on Seventh Street.

The Seventh Street property is just opposite the vacant, 142-year-old Hudson Upper railroad depot on the east side of the street.

Catalano said he didnt know if the project would have targeted tenants. In 2012, Galvan and the Mental Health Association proposed converting 622-624 State into a shelter for 30 homeless people. Since then, the countys number of homeless has dropped off dramatically, and Catalano didnt mention the word homeless Wednesday, although he did say the word hotel once or twice.

The current plans are being designed by architect John OConnell of Arlington, Mass.

The plan proposes building a 2.5-story addition to the three-story building on the vacant land on State Street; a two-story infill addition between the three-story building and the garage on Seventh Street; and adding two stories to the garage.

In 2010, Galvan demolished the then-existing addition at 620 State. At that time, then-Code Enforcement Officer Peter Wurster said Galvan was already at work on a plan to restore the main building, 622-624 State St.

A series of three four-step staircases would be placed on the inclined land on the west side of the 2.5-story addition on State Street, leading down to an open alcove in the midst of the three buildings.

Originally, Catalano said, the plan called for 24 studio apartments, but that number has been scaled down to 10, to be sited in 622-624. The to-be-converted garage, he said, wouldnt have any apartments, but could be a multipurpose building for educational or community use.

Two handicap-accessible apartments are planned for the first floor of 622-624, OConnell said, with large apartments on the second floor and smaller apartments under the eaves of the third story.
