Comets Corner with Kent Huskins - January 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

January 28, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets Last week, we sat down with Cal O'Reilly, one of the more recent additions to the Comets roster, and someone who has made a noticeable impact since joining the team. Today, we'll transition from learning about a key forward to a key defenseman, Kent Huksins, who has stood his ground on the blue line this season, serving as a key facet of the Comets defensemen.

While Huskins may not be tallying goals and assists game after game, he has, without a doubt, made an impact since signing with the Comets on November 4th. Huskins brings a level of depth and experience to a relatively young group of Comets defensemen. A native of Almonte, Ontario, Huskins was a member of the 2007 Stanley Cup Champion Anaheim Ducks and has played over 300 games at the NHL level, recording 68 total points (13-55-68). "Being on the cup-winning Ducks team in 2007 was undoubtedly the highlight of my hockey career," Huskins said. "I'll always be extremely thankful to the Ducks organization for the opportunity to be a part of that team...the experience was truly surreal."

With rookies such as Henrik Tommernes and Frank Corrado serving as key forces of the Comets defense, it is without a doubt that Huskins serves as a role model for a lot of the younger guys on the team. "Frank's a great player and definitely has a very bright future in the NHL ahead of him," Huskins explained. "I've actually been really impressed with all of our defensemen. I wouldn't be surprised to see all of them in the NHL one day." When asked if the guys do see him as a role model, Huskins replied modestly, "I don't know about a role model. They definitely joke a lot about me being an "old man" though."

Even though the Comets are currently riding a four-game winning streak, the road hasn't always been easy. "I think the biggest challenge we faced in the first half of the season was frustration from working extremely hard and not seeing much in terms of immediate results," Huskins explained. "There were a lot of games where we felt like our levels of effort and execution were really high, but we kept coming up short on the losing end. Through all the tough losses though, the coaches have done a great job of teaching and the guys have stuck together and continued to work, so hopefully that continues to serve us well in the second half." Despite the ups and downs, Huskins has enjoyed his experience thus far in Utica, thanking the fans for always staying loyal, patient and supportive.

As the Comets enter the heart of the second half of the season, they will look to Huskins to stay solid on the blue line and continue to feed off of his experience and knowledge on the ice.

Michael Carroll: Writing with Dredd, Blood and Tears - January 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Michael Carroll is an Irish writer known for his books, comics, and short stories. His superhero centric New Heroes/Quantum Prophecy series for young readers debuted in 2006 and has several upcoming additions. In comics, he currently writes Jennifer Blood for Dynamite, Judge Dredd for 2000AD and the Judge Dredd Megazine.

I recently had a chance to discuss comics, writing, and superheroes with Michael. It's clear he is a life long science fiction fan and has a passion for the genre.

As a huge science fiction fan I'm always interested to hear how others developed their love for the genre. How did yours start?

Hard to say exactly when it began... It was so long ago now! One of my earliest memories is watching one of the moon landings on TV, possibly the very first one. This was on a tiny monochrome TV set that my parents borrowed for the occasion. If it was the first moon landing, then I would have been three years old.

My parents have always been voracious readers, something they've passed on to me and my three sisters, so we were always at the library. I'd pick books on science and astronomy, and that led to SF novels by people like Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke and Ray Bradbury. Before long I concluded that science fiction was more interesting than real science. With science fiction, you got aliens. With real science, you got mathematics. No contest!

In the early 1970s I discovered Doctor Who through a two-page strip that appeared in a British comic, possibly TV21 or something of that nature. Jon Pertwee was the Doctor du jour, and I loved the comic enough to seek out the TV show. Later, I discovered that the local library stocked Doctor Who novelisations -- they were great! But some of them were kind of scary: I had to read them from behind the sofa.

The kid who lived next door introduced me to Batman and Superman (not personally: he didn't actually KNOW Batman and Superman) and that sparked my interest in superheroes. Somewhere along the way I encountered Star Trek, which I think was the first TV show I ever saw in colour (we were not a wealthy family - for years we didn't even HAVE a TV set!).

But the three biggest influences on me were... The UK Marvel comics. These were black-and-white reprints of Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, The Avengers and so on, and they were GREAT! Here in Ireland, we didn't have a comic-book industry of our own, so we had to make do with comics imported from the UK. Most of them weren't great: they were still mired in the barely-post-Victorian sensibilities. They seemed to be about war, sports or cheeky guttersnipes getting the better of the local park-keeper. Compared to them, the Marvel stuff was chocolate-chip ambrosia!

The next great influence was the British science fiction comic 2000AD, which arrived in early 1977, a few weeks before my eleventh birthday. Like most British comics, 2000AD was an anthology title, and one of the strips was Judge Dredd, who quickly became - and remains - my all-time favourite comic character. (Important nerdy trivia: Judge Dredd has been around longer than Star Wars!)

The third influence: In late 1979 2000AD also brought us The Stainless Steel Rat, an adaptation of the novel by Harry Harrison. This was my first introduction to Harry's work, and it completely blew me away -- so much that I went out and bought the book, then I bought the others in the series, and - gradually - all of Harry's other novels and collections. From his books I learned that it was possible to seamlessly combine action and humour - something far too few writers seemed to even attempt, let alone master.

Gold Bottoming - January 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Gold is bottoming, showing incredible resilience over the past 7 months. After suffering an epic plunge in last years second quarter, gold has held its ground ever since. This is despite still facing the same howling headwinds that forced that extraordinary selloff. Gold has found strong support and carved a massive double bottom. Thus 2013s gold super-storm has passed, and a mighty new upleg is dawning.

Obviously last year was exceedingly miserable for gold. This metal plunged 27.9%, its worst calendar-year performance in 32 years! When something hasnt been witnessed for a third of a century, there is no doubt it is rare and extreme. But the whole year masks the real story, the second quarter. The gold price plummeted an astounding 22.8% in 2013s Q2. That was its worst calendar quarter in 93 years!

Almost 4/5ths of last years entire gold losses happened during Q2. If the pair of epic gold selloffs that erupted in April and June hadnt occurred, last year wouldve looked radically different. And dont be fooled by the certainty of hindsight, market events so rare and extreme that they only happen on the order of once a century simply cant be predicted. These once-in-a-lifetime super-storms just have to be weathered.

After golds second-quarter free-fall, analysts swarmed out of the woodwork to forecast far-lower gold prices. They bought into the extreme fear spawned by that epic selloff, fully expecting golds downside momentum to continue. Dire predictions of sub-$1000 gold in the subsequent months abounded, even among veteran gold analysts. Their commentary back in June and July was overwhelmingly bearish.

But momentum-based technical analysis always fails at extremes. Just when everyone is convinced that a price has moved so far in one direction that its kinetic energy will carry it on indefinitely, prevailing sentiment is too lopsided to be sustainable. In golds case, the epic fear last summer meant everyone susceptible to being scared into selling gold low had already pulled the trigger. So gold started to bottom.

Nissan Hits Record Sales In 2013 - January 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

LONDON Jan 23, 2014: Sales records have been beaten for another year at Nissan, with 118,061 cars sold in 2013, an increase of 11.5 percent on 2012 itself a record year. Including LCVs, Nissan sold 128,680 vehicles in the UK, up 11.0 percent from 115,970 in 2012.

Key to these record figures were the performance of two British-built stars: the Juke and Qashqai. Despite the imminent arrival of the second-generation model which has just arrived in UK showrooms the Qashqai continued its remarkable success story, notching up 50,211 sales, an incredible 9.9 per cent increase on 2012 and the first time the Qashqai has topped the 50,000 mark. The figures consolidated the Qashqais position as the UKs sixth best-selling car.

The Juke also enjoyed a stellar year, with sales up from 28,862 in 2012 to 37,488 in 2013 a 29.9 per cent increase. Now in its third year, the British designed and built supermini crossover was boosted by the arrival of a Nismo version that added a sporting edge to the range.

The all-electric LEAF also had a busy year up from 699 sales in 2012 to 1,812 in 2013. As part of Nissans growth plan for electric vehicles, European production of a revised LEAF started at Nissans Sunderland production facility in April, with the model range growing substantially.

Nissans remarkable sales success was set against the backdrop of a record year at Nissan's Sunderland manufacturing facility, which broke the 500,000 unit production barrier for the second year in a row, building an incredible 501,756 vehicles.

NissanLCVs also proved popular with buyers in 2013, with 10,619 light commercial vehicles sold an increase of 4.7 per cent. The NV200 and Navara were the two biggest sellers, notching up 4,230 and 4,484 sales respectively.

Jim Wright, Managing Director at Nissan GB said: These figures prove that Nissan is continuing to reap the rewards of hard work and intelligent planning. For the Qashqai to break the 50,000 sales mark in its sixth year of production is testament to its remarkable design and value.

Im also immensely proud of our other British success stories, namely the Juke, new Note and LEAF. The Jukes performance proves that British buyers value bold and innovative design, while the Note and LEAF are welcome additions to the Sunderland stable. To break the 500,000 production barrier for a second year is incredible, especially as the plant has been busy integrating new facilities for new Note and LEAF. With the new Qashqai rolling off the lines, Im sure that 2014 will be another year to remember.

Home Budgeting Calculator Revised for Canadian Users - January 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    (PRWEB) January 22, 2014

Home budgeting calculator on aCalculator.com has recently gone through updates according to the current economic conditions of the country. The website, launched earlier this year, promised to keep its tools up to date. The second phase of updates and additions started earlier this month during which nearly almost one hundred calculators were updated and several new ones were added.

Explaining why changes were required for a calculator used for budgeting, the spokesperson for aCalculator.com said, Canadian economy is very fast paced. When we launched the website, there were a lot of uncertainties and people were skeptical about the economic conditions. Today, the situation is much more stable. The GDP went up 1.8 points in this quarter, largely due to the growing energy sector. Still, we want people to be frugal; we realized there are a few positive changes that will help them loosen their hand without going overboard.

The new calculator is largely improved due to the addition of multiple income streams and expenses that include a breakdown of utilities and groceries. Several other changes are made to ensure the ease of use for the users. The usage method, according to the spokesperson, is simple and easy, and designed for everyone regardless of age and education. The simple input values include users total income, spouses income, misc income (if any), mortgages, debt, utility, groceries, and other expense.

The result can be seen in two different ways that include a chart and a graph. The two graphs depict the users income breakdown and monthly expenses of the user. The charts depict the net monthly income and total monthly expenses of the household. And finally, there is another pie graph that presents a breakdown of the users annual gross income. We tried to keep the results as detailed yet simple as possible. It will make it easy to understand for everyone, even people who are not very comfortable with numbers and data, the spokesperson added.

Speaking of the calculators for Canadian users, the spokesperson also highlighted some of the newly added tools in the category. He encouraged Canadian users to utilize these tools, especially the mortgage calculators in order to make better financial decisions. All of the tools and calculators available on the website are completely free unless the users opt for customized versions. This White Label service is available for a minor subscription fee. This week’s additions to the Local Music Database - January 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Every week, we add around a dozen acts, new and old, to the Readers Local Music Database, which currently features over 3,700 band pages along with related discographies, MP2s, videos, links to Reader articles, and more. These are the newest additions.

Fronted by singer David Martin and featuring former members of Chanauk, Weight of the Sun was founded late last year. Citing influences like Faith No More, Intronaut, Deftones, Glassjaw, Pelican, ISIS, Palms, Russian Circles, and Baroness, they plan to release their debut full-length in March.

Formed in late 2012 from the ashes of an original rock band named Julian and fronted by a Danzig-esque singer named Karthik, S.M.C. performs mostly covers of Ronnie James Dio-related material (early Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Elf), as well as music by Ozzy Osbourne and some original songs.

Having been together around six months now, JuJu Satori includes former members of the Radiators (Barry Hill), the Dinettes (Sue Delguidice), Grilled Funkshop (Chad Allbritton), and the Steve Poltz band (Daniel Johnsen).

As for newly-added older bands, the Sleepwalkers have been playing authentic Americana roots rock since 1992. They specialize in original American music styles ranging from blues, country, Tex-Mex, Cumbias, and their own brand of roots rock. In 1999 they released their first album Can't Stop Rockin' on Relampago-go Records, which earned them positive national reviews, and a nomination for Best Americana album in the San Diego Music Awards. Their songs "Dead of Night" and "Vas A Ver!" was included in the 2007 movie Ofrenda Desnuda, directed by International Film Award winner Guillerma Von Son.

In 2008, they covered a song by Bart Mendoza, "Days & Maybe's" (re-titled "No Me Cueste"), which was included on Forty One Sixty: The Songs of the Shambles. Having earned six SDMA nominations for Best Americana/Roots band, the Sleepwalkers were mostly active from 1992 to 2002, until reforming last year. Theyll play La Mesas Riviera Supper Club & Turquoise Room in on January 25 and February 8.

MohaviSoul is an Americana-soul-bluegrass band featuring Randy Hanson and Dan Sankey, augmented by other players 'pending the city they're playing in. Their debut CD Every Second established their sound, which grew more folky as of their second full-length Blue Diesel, released late last year. "The CD is named after a song I wrote, which is a very tongue-in-cheek double story about love and something else," says Hanson. You can catch them on January 26 at Southpaw (East Village), and March 8 at Wynola Pizza Express in Julian.
