COLLEGE STATION, Texas Preparing for the worst.
Firefighters and first responders from around the world come to College Station each year to train at Disaster City.
And instructors want to make sure they're prepared for emergency situations of all sizes.
News 3 looks at some new additions coming after members of Texas Task Force 1 responded to the explosion in West, and the tornado in Moore, Oklahoma last year.
From fighting fires of all different types to searching through rubble, a simulated train derailment and building collapses, Disaster City is a hands-on place to learn and train to potentially save lives.
Jeff Saunders is the Texas Task Force 1 Operations Chief and says the new simulations being built include scenarios they encountered after the fertilizer explosion in West including not being able to use the stairs on some second story apartments.
"So a lot of the work we had to do was on an exposed front and this building is going to have a two story section to it that's going to let us teach our people how to access that second story without the use of anything on the building," Saunders said.
The newest additions to the most famous urban search and rescue training facility in the world is just one more way first responders can simulate disasters they might encounter in real life.
After the devastating E-F 5 Tornado last May in Moore, Oklahoma, they are also adding an underground tornado shelter covered in debris, to see if rescue dogs can find a person taking shelter underground.
"We got a list of about 1,900 storm shelters we needed to make sure were completely clear. A lot of those were flush to the ground with very light debris over the top of them, but some of them were hard to find so we're going to simulate that here as well," Saunders added.

Comedy Central
"Broad City"
Comedy Central has renewed Broad City for a 10-episode second season.
Amy Poehler, an executive producer on the half-hour scripted comedy, announced the news during Seth Meyers' Late Night debut Monday evening.
Broad City centers on two friends (Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer) as they navigate their way through life in New York City. The show, which premiered Jan. 22 to just under 1 million viewers to its premiere telecast, began as a sketch idea from Jacobson and Glazer at the Upright Citizens Brigade in New York before becoming a popular web hit -- ultimately catching the eye of Parks and Recreation's Poehler, also a UCB alum.

During the biannual Television Critics Association press tour in January, Poehler was quite positive about the Viacom-owned cabler. "There's so much good female comedy out there and a lot of it is on Comedy Central," Poehler said.
Poehler, Jacobson, Glazer, 3 Arts' Dave Becky, Generate's Sam Saifer and Tony Hernandez are executive producers, with as Eric Slovin as co-executive producer. Jacobson and Glazer created the series. Hannibal Buress, Arturo Castro, Paul Downs, John Gemberling, Chris Gethard and Stephen Schneider co-star, with Poehler, Fred Armisen, Rachel Dratch, Amy Sedaris and Janeane Garofalo among season-one guest stars.
"I didn't realize Broad City was so good until I read all the incredible reviews, said Kent Alterman, president of content development and original programming at Comedy Central. Now I'm really excited about it."
Broad City currently averages 1.2 million viewers per episode and is enroute to Comedy Central's highest-rated first season since 2012 among the younger demos, including adults 18-34 and men 18-34.

"A translation is not an exercise in creativity, but a meticulous task of preserving the meaning of the original without changes, omissions or additions." Rome, February 21, 2014 (Zenit.org) | 678 hits
Cardinal George Pell, Archbishop of Sydney, delivered the following address at a Rome conference marking the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council constitution on the liturgy,Sacrosanctum Concilium. The conference, whose theme theme was "Gratitude and commitment to a great movement of ecclesial communion", took place at the Pontifical Lateran University Feb. 18-20. As someone heavily invovled in the new translation of the English Missal, Cardinal Pell spoke about the issue of liturgical translations.

LITURGICAL TRANSLATIONS AND TWO INSTRUCTIONS

LITURGICAL TRANSLATIONS
The Age of Translation
In our global village today translations play a great part. The supranational bodies such as the European Union and the United Nations Organisation battle with the diplomatic and linguistic niceties of ensuring the translation of Thai texts into Estonian, Mongol into Greek and Maltese into Indonesian. The many channels of Italian television offer, alongside locally produced programmes, a myriad of films and other imported transmissions dubbed expertly into the Italian language. An inexpensive electric torch comes with an instruction sheet in 32 languages. Our computers are equipped with software capable in seconds of translating between many tongues and even reading them aloud.
Naturally, some of these translations are ephemeral, gone on the wind like our everyday casual conversations, but it is a challenge of another higher order to translate Dickens into Polish, Flaubert into Quechua and Dostoievsky into English.

Ansell, a global leader in protection solutions, announces the introduction of two new, ultra-durable and light-duty work gloves to the HyFlex family. The uniquely engineered HyFlex 11-818 and HyFlex 11-840 gloves incorporate FORTIX Abrasion Resistance Technology, an Ansell a patent pending technology that applies a thin, resilient and breathable nitrile foam coating to knitted gloves to dramatically extend their working life and improve their comfort in abrasive applications.
Industrial workers have a common refrain when asked what they want: lighter weight gloves that are comfortable and offer superior dexterity. The need for tactility and comfort can prompt workers to remove their gloves or to cut off glove finger tips. These actions not only increase the risk for injuries; they may also jeopardize the quality of the product or process, undermine safety and performance and drive up costs. Protecting against these risks is crucial. As a result, Ansell engineered the HyFlex 11-818 and 11-840 to deliver comfort, safety and durability while providing cutting-edge protection and peace of mind to workers everywhere.
There is a natural trend toward lighter and thinner gloves allowing workers to better feel what they are handling or doing, and increasing comfort and productivity, said Bob Gaither, Ansell senior vice president and regional director, North America. The tough, resilient FORTX nitrile coating and 18 gauge knitting technology is the last frontier in tactility and productivity close to a second skin effect establishing a new benchmark and redefining hand comfort.
In addition to FORTIX Abrasion resistance technology, the HyFlex 11-818 and 11-840 provide a distinctive new ultralight, high-durability glove to the safety marketplace, setting new industry standards through the following innovations:
These unique features result in reduced costs for safety managers, while increasing worker comfort and productivity. Further product information can be found at the HyFlex 11-818 and HyFlex 11-840 product pages.

Two homes recommended for landmarking -
February 21, 2014 by
Mr HomeBuilder
The Landmarks Preservation Commission, in separate votes Wednesday, recommended that the Town Council designate as landmarks a Bermuda-style home on Cocoanut Row and a Mediterranean Revival-style home on Brazilian Avenue.
The votes were unanimous, but a few issues complicated the properties hearings.
In the case of 153 Cocoanut Row, owners Bruce and Dorothy Bossidyalso were seeking approval to built a two-story addition behind the William Kemp Caler and Raymond Plockerman-designed 1950 home.
Several commissioners objected, saying the addition would dominate the existing, one-story house.
Commissioner William Feldkamp called the addition a pop-up and showed images of one-story houses with two-story additions.
Regardless of the landscaping thats put on this, anyone on Cocoanut Row is going to see that second-story roof-line there. I unfortunately think its inappropriate for the house, inappropriate for the style and if the owner were to go ahead and do it, I think he would be very unhappy afterward with how he had ruined a wonderful house, Feldkamp said.
At the urging of attorney Ron Kolins, who said Feldkamp was prohibited from presenting evidence, Town Attorney John Randolph told commissioners they should not allow the photos to influence their review of the project.
Commissioner Jacqueline Albarran, a Palm Beach architect, said the owners have plenty of space on the property to expand square footage on a single level.
The board granted Kolins request for a deferral until next month, so architect Kevin Asbacher can return with a revised plan.
