Metro Sioux City tops publication list for most development projects - March 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SIOUX CITY | For the second straight year andthe fourth time in seven years, metro Sioux City has been crowned a national economic development champion.

The tri-state regionshared the No. 1 spot in Site Selection magazine's annual ranking of small-sizemetro areas with the most new or expanded corporate projects.

Sioux City tied for first with Dubuque, Iowa, and Altoona, Pa., and among areas with populations between 50,000 and 200,000. Each metro city had 14 qualifying projects in 2013, defined as investments of at least $1 million in investment, additions of at least 20,000 square feet and creation of at least 50 new jobs.

Adam Bruns, managing editor of Atlanta-based Site Selection, broke the news tomore than 250 local business leaders at a luncheon at the Sioux City Convention Center sponsored by The Siouxland Initiative.

Gov. Terry Branstad and Iowa Economic Development Authority Director Debi Durham, a former Siouxland Initiative president, celebrated the top ranking with the local leaders.

"Getting this honor from Site Selection magazine is a big deal," Branstad told the audience.

The 60-year-old publication's base of 49,000 subscribers includes professionals who help corporations find the right place to locate and expand, Branstad said.

"If you can get the attention of these people, obviously it improves your chances of getting a project or a company in your state," the Republican governor said at a news conference.

Site Selection also ranked Sioux CityNo. 1 in 2007, 2008 and 2012.

Bruns said the fact Siouxland has earned the honor four times in the past seven years "speaks to their collective vision and the kind of continuity that gives company decision-makers confidence."

Revs tie Rapids - March 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

March 1, 2014 - Major League Soccer (MLS) New England Revolution TUCSON, Ariz. - Two recent additions - Teal Bunbury and Patrick Mullins - both scored goals for the New England Revolution as the team closed its 2014 preseason schedule with a 2-2 draw against the Colorado Rapids in the teams' final game of the Desert Diamond Cup on a rainy and windy day.

With the draw, the Revs closed their seven-game preseason schedule with a 2-1-4 record, including a 1-1-2 mark at the Desert Diamond Cup.

Bunbury got the Revs on the board early, picking up a deflected Diego Fagundez pass in the fifth minute and launching an angled 21-yard shot. His attempt skipped past Colorado goalkeeper Clint Irwin, finding the inside of the far post for a 1-0 New England lead.

The two teams traded possession for the next 20 minutes as the rainy and windy conditions hampered played, but Colorado got on the board in the 25th minute. Dillon Serna put a hard shot on target, but Bobby Shuttleworth made the save. However, his parry landed at the feet of the on-coming Edson Buddle, who buried for the goal and a 1-1 score.

Bunbury had a chance to push the score to 2-1 in the 36th minute. Kelyn Rowe chipped the Rapids' defense and found Fagundez coming down the right center channel. Fagundez then played a perfectly weighted ball around the retreating Colorado defense and found Bunbury, but his first-time redirection was just wide of target.

Mullins put the Revs back ahead in the 57th minute. After a handball foul was whistled on Colorado just outside the right edge of the penalty area, Daigo Kobayashi drove the free kick into the area. A.J. Soares' flick was saved by Irwin, but he bobbled the ball and Mullins pounced on the loose ball to put the Revs ahead.

After both teams made substitutions to almost every player on the field - including goalkeepers - the Rapids came back and leveled the score at 2-2 in the 82nd minute. Gabriel Torres broke down the left wing and swung a shot in that Luis Soffner saved. The rebound, however, landed in the path of Vicente Sanchez coming down the center channel and he tapped in for the Rapids' second goal.

Both teams lost a player with five minutes remaining when Colorado's Marvin Chavez and the Revs' Dimitry Imbongo got into a tussle on the far sideline, leading referee Jair Marrufo to issue both players straight red cards in the 85th minute.

The Revolution officially opens the 2014 MLS regular season one week from today - Saturday, March 8 - when the team travels to BBVA Compass Stadium to face the Houston Dynamo. Kickoff is set for 8:30 p.m. ET and Comcast SportsNet will televise the game live.

Woolworths Profit Meets Estimates as Store Additions Spur Sales - February 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Woolworths Ltd. (WOW), the largest retailer outside the U.S. and Europe, posted first-half profit that matched analyst estimates as the number of stores increased and a measure of sales rose at the fastest pace in 11 quarters.

Net income rose 15 percent to A$1.32 billion ($1.18 billion) in the six months ended Jan. 5, from A$1.16 billion a year earlier, the Sydney-based company said in a regulatory statement today. That was in line with the A$1.3 billion average of three analysts estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

Improved earnings give Chief Executive Officer Grant OBrien more firepower to lift the companys share of Australias grocery market and fund the expansion of its Masters hardware chain. Sales from Woolworths stores open at least 12 months increased by 3.4 percent in the second quarter and a measure of shelf prices climbed 2.1 percent, in both cases the fastest rates since 2011.

This is the year when youll see the changeover from grocery price deflation to inflation which will in turn boost future revenue and earnings, Jeremy Hook, investment director at TMS Capital Pty. in Sydney, said before the earnings announcement. It helps not having to contend with deflation and shows how well theyve done in the past.

A measure of net profit will rise by 5 percent to 7 percent in the full year, up from a previous forecast of 4 percent to 7 percent, the company said today.

Woolworths shares closed down 0.3 percent at A$36.42 in Sydney yesterday, marking a 7.6 percent rise so far this year thats outstripped the 1.1 percent improvement in the S&P/ASX 200 index.

Japonee resurges from its ashes - February 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

POSTED AT 12:41 AM ON Feb. 27, 2014 (UPDATED AT 12:42 AM ON Feb. 27, 2014)

The renovated restaurant smelled of a fresh coat of paint and new lumber.

Gray stone waterfalls hung on wood-paneled walls that betrayed no traces of smoke damage.

The sushi bar had moved from the right to the left side, but the Japanese-Korean restaurant Japonee looked much the same as it had before a three-alarm fire damaged the building in 2012.

Landlord Han Chong adjusted his thick-rimmed glasses, enthusiastically explaining the new additions a hibachi grill on a new second floor, high ceilings, large flat screen televisions, French-influenced Japanese food. He plans to open in March.

I hope it just at least goes back to the business we had before, Chong said. Thats all were hoping.

    ***

Server Lilay Cai worked at Japanee for three days before flames engulfed the restaurant on 320 N. Walnut St.

On the morning of Sept. 24, 2012, electrical wiring in a refrigerator sparked a fire in the kitchen, Chong said. Though the Bloomington Fire Department contained the fire itself, smoke and water caused damage throughout the restaurant.

BFD Chief Roger Kerr confirmed the fire was completely accidental and no one was injured.

T-Mobiles Losses Mount as No. 4 Carrier Pushes Subscriber Gains - February 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

T-Mobile US Inc. (TMUS), the fourth-largest U.S. wireless carrier, reported a net loss for a third consecutive quarter as subscriber gains, driven by its cheaper service plans, resulted in higher costs.

The net loss for the fourth quarter totaled $20 million, the Bellevue, Washington-based company said today in a filing. Leaving out interest expenses of $234 million, along with taxes, depreciation and amortization, profit would have grown 18 percent to $1.24 billion.

T-Mobile is working to lure customers by challenging the industrys use of long-term contracts, discounted phones and international roaming rates. Last month, the company started offering as much as $450 to people who switch service from rivals such as AT&T Inc. (T) T-Mobile, which merged with MetroPCS last year, added 869,000 monthly customers last quarter, topping the 791,000 average of analysts estimates.

T-Mobile is making money on each subscriber they acquire -- its just nowhere near as much money as the incumbents are used to, Craig Moffett, an analyst at MoffettNathanson LLC in New York, said in an e-mail. He recommends buying the shares. The rest of the industry should be very afraid.

T-Mobile fell 5.7 percent to $30.47 at the close in New York. The shares have declined 9.4 percent this year.

For all of 2013, T-Mobile had net income of $35 million. The company posted a third-quarter loss of $36 million and a second-quarter loss of $16 million.

AT&T struck back with price cuts of its own today, saying in a statement it would drop the cost of calls to the rest of North America and give customers on its Mobile Share plans unlimited international text messages for free.

While customer additions have increased, the average bill size has shrunk. T-Mobiles average phone bill for monthly subscribers decreased about 2.9 percent to $50.70 from $52.20 in the third quarter. Analysts had projected $51.06, according to a survey of eight analysts by Bloomberg.

Declines in revenue per customer should begin to stabilize in the second half of this year, Chief Financial Officer Braxton Carter said today on a conference call.

T-Mobile forecast 2014 adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of $5.7 billion to $6 billion. That compares with the $5.99 billion estimated by analysts on average, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
