First Listen: Death, 'Death III' - April 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

hide captionDeath will release the archival collection Death III on April 22.

Death will release the archival collection Death III on April 22.

The Detroit band Death spent a chunk of the '70s making vital music that went almost entirely unheard for decades. Inspired in part by Alice Cooper, brothers Bobby, David and Dannis Hackney made furious, hooky proto-punk music that existed alongside bands like the MC5, yet never reached an audience. When it finally saw national release back in 2009, Death's music seemed to emerge from an alternate-universe canon.

Five years ago, ...For the Whole World to See surfaced as a frequently masterful lost album from the mid-'70s, and the years since have spawned a second collection of recordings (Spiritual, Mental, Physical) in 2011, a documentary (A Band Called Death) in 2012, and now a decades-spanning compilation titled Death III. Taken together, they paint a picture of a group that deserves its new-found place in rock history.

Given that its nine songs span nearly two decades these recordings were made in 1975, 1976, 1980 and 1992 Death III can't help but project an odds-and-ends vibe. Two tracks, "Introduction by David" and "First Snowfall in Detroit," are instrumental, while others convey the raw feel of home demos. But the recordings still capture the creativity of the minds that made them: From 1980, the skittishly paranoid "North Street" chronicles the perils that await the have-nots in Detroit, while "We Are Only People" spends nearly nine minutes transforming from a trippy, meandering seether to a boldly rocking epic.

Until recently, Death's story was one of obscurity and disappointment: an aborted major-label record deal, ill-fated attempts to regroup as The 4th Movement in the late '70s and, most sadly, the death of guitarist David Hackney from lung cancer in 2000. It took bassist Bobby Hackney's sons stumbling across some tapes in the family attic for Death's story to even begin to be told, but now there's a true archive to complement its amazing resurrection. As anyone who's seen the reconstituted Death on the live stage can tell you, it may well be time for some new recordings welcome additions to an unlikely story that almost went untold.

New Powell Middle School project moves forward - April 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

It will be a new middle school, but it will be familiar looking because youll have the old gym as a kind of an anchor on the one end of it, said Todd Wilder, coordinator of support services for Park County School District No. 1.

The school will be located on the same campus as the current building, and older sections eventually will be demolished once the new construction is finished. The gym is the only existing structure that will remain, and it will undergo significant renovations.

Encompassing roughly 58,000 square feet of new construction, work on the next phase may begin later this month. Groathouse Constructions bid of $16,359,446 was unanimously approved by the Park County School District No. 1 Board of Trustees on March 25. The Wyoming School Facilities Department signed the contract for the project this week.

The new building will feature separate classroom wings or houses for sixth, seventh and eighth grades, each with modern and unique colors and design aspects. Phase I, completed in 2012, will become the center of the school, with most of the new construction occurring on the east side.

With features like a sundial tower, art patio, indoor/outdoor Davinci science lab and outdoor amphitheater, the new school wont resemble any others in the district or even in the Big Horn Basin.

I am so excited about what this will add to the community, said Jason Sleep, the middle school principal. The aesthetic will be pretty amazing.

Wilder said that the school district is really proud of the new middle schools design.

We think its probably going to be one of the finest middle school facilities in the state when its done, Wilder said. We appreciate all the community involvement we had as we were going through the concept and design.

Powell school officials have known a new middle school project was on the horizon for the past decade, but it hinged on funding from the state, as well as the completion of the first phase.

In this 10-year story for the middle school, it became more complex than just a single building, Wilder said.

Pippins Sign Duo From Oregon State - April 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

April 8, 2014 - West Coast League (WCL) Yakima Valley Pippins The Yakima Valley Pippins have added Austin Woodward and Max George, both of whom will play for Oregon State next year, to the inaugural roster. With the additions, the roster now sits at 20 players, with more signings to come. Oregon State (25-6,9-3 PAC 12) is currently sitting in second place of the PAC-12 behind Washington (22-6-1,10-2 PAC 12) midway through the regular season.

"The Oregon State baseball program speaks for itself," Pippins Head Coach Marcus McKimmy said. "I'm very excited to welcome two players to Yakima from a top-ten baseball program in the country."

Woodward will join the Beavers' roster as a pitcher next season after transferring from Linn-Benton Community College. He was a second team all-NWAACC pitcher last season at Linn-Benton and is a former 1A/2A state player of the year at Union High School (Union, OR). He is currently red-shirting for the Beavers this spring.

"Austin is a guy I've had to pleasure to see pitch and coach at the junior college level already," McKimmy said. "Put simply, he is a Winner. He, like Max, can fill many different roles for the Pippins because he is so versatile. I have complete confidence using him as a nightly starter or out of the bullpen. Additionally, he will be counted on to bring leadership to our pitching staff and in the locker room."

George, a native of Parker, CO, will head to Corvallis next season after finishing up his senior year at Regis Jesuit High School. George is an infielder who was named to Perfect Game's 3rd team All-American list this year.

"Max is going to open eyes immediately as a Pippin," McKimmy said. "He has above-average speed which will put pressure on every defense we play. Pair that with his ability to play multiple positions and be a middle of the order hitter, he gives our lineup a ton of versatility during a very full summer schedule. His tools on offense have a chance to be very special as he develops as a graduating senior."

The Yakima Valley Pippins will begin their quest for a WCL Championship at Yakima County Stadium on June 6th, 2014 at 7:05 P.M. against East Division rival Wenatchee. Tickets are now on sale for the 2014 season, including full-season and partial-season packages, as well as select team merchandise. Those interested in being part of something great from the start are asked to contact Noel Zanchelli at 206.271.7820 or by email at noel@pippinsbaseball.com.

New surprises, more fun & adventure - April 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Theres an extra dose of magic aboard the Disney Magic, Disneys first cruise ship, with new spaces, re-imagined areas and exciting additions for the whole family. Guests can now experience new adventures from bow to stern throughout their journey on the cruise ship that set the standard for oceangoing majesty and family fun. From a new grand atrium lobby and a childrens area of super hero proportions to a three-story water thrill slide and a spa to stimulate the Senses, there are plenty of new and magical surprises in store for cruise guests. The ship features fun new experiences with Marvel charactersthe first time super heroes from the Marvel universe have been introduced on a Disney Cruise Line ship. We have always been committed to reinvesting in our fleet and continuously making shipboard enhancements that elevate the guest experience, says Karl Holz, president of Disney Cruise Line. What weve done with the Disney Magic is yet another step forward in our commitment to delivering the absolute best family vacations at sea. Storytelling is at the heart of everything we do, says Joe Lanzisero, senior creative vice president for Walt Disney Imagineering. Walt Disney was a master storyteller and knew how to engage peoples emotions into stories. Our job is to take what we learned from Walt and apply it to the experiences on board our ships. Here are some highlights of new magic in store for guests aboard the Disney Magic:

A grand first impression When guests board the Disney Magic, they enter the grand atrium lobby that is redesigned to be elegant art deco, inspired by elements of the sea, according to Lanzisero. Filmmaking is the history of our company and in film the establishing shot sets the scene, he says. This is the same with the atrium, as we begin telling our story. The spacious and spectacular three-deck lobby features hand-tufted, custom-made carpet that dazzles in a palette of vibrant coral, blue and aquamarine seashell-inspired designs. The art deco atrium chandelier is inspired by rays of the sun and the glisten of the surface of the ocean. Opulent furnishings, a grand piano and giant portholes recall the days of early 20th century ocean liners. The lobbys centerpiece is a bronze statue of Helmsman Mickey, ever-smiling and keeping watch as guests stroll past. The famed statue, which has stood in the atrium since the ship was launched, has received a special makeover bringing new luster to its golden hue.

Disney, Disney-Pixar & Marvel characters join the fun Disneys Oceaneer Club, open to 3- to- 12-year-old children, is a completely re-imagined area that transports children to the magical realms of brave super heroes, adventuresome toys, fanciful fairies and Mickey Mouses club for creativity and fun. With Marvel now a part of the Walt Disney Company family, this marks the first time the super hero icons of Marvel have been introduced on a Disney Cruise Line ship. Marvel and Walt Disney Imagineers have created a new space for children to enter into the Marvel Universe. Marvels The Avengers make their presence known in an epic way aboard the Disney Magic, with Marvels Avengers Academy calling Disneys Oceaneer Club its new seaward home. Young crime-fighters are transported to a high-tech command post used by The Avengers for special missions and operations training. Throughout the base, displays featuring some of the equipment that helps to make The Avengers the earths mightiest heroesIron Mans suit of armor, Captain Americas shield and Thors hammerinspire super hero recruits through their academy missions. Marvels Avengers Academy is a multi-day, immersive entertainment experience where children interact with Marvel characters and unleash their inner super heroes. Adjacent to Marvels Avengers Academy is Andys Room, where stars of the Disney-Pixar Toy Story trilogy come to life in a multi-level space. Stocked with all of Andys favorite toys, the room features a larger-than-life Mr. Potato Head, a giant version of the lovable piggy bank, Hamm and a Slinky Dog slide. In Mickey Mouse Club the room is splashed with Mickeys signature colors of red, yellow and black, kids can create crafts and play games on ear-shaped tables. The club also features Goofy Gears, an oversized activity where kids play with wacky, magnetic spinning gears. But the kid-sized fun doesnt stop there!

H2 OH! The upper ship decks of the Disney Magic have been redesigned for plenty of splashtacular fun, with waterfall adventures that include a three-story water slide for thrill-seekers and a Huey, Dewey and Louie-themed toddler splash zone for smaller ducklings. From small children to teens to adults, everyone will have a space to have fun in the sun and water. We added more water play areas, dynamic slides, interactive elements for the kids, and more shade, says Lanzisero. Water thrills are found on the AquaDunk, a three-story body slide that begins with a surprise launch. Riders step inside a translucent tube and await the near-vertical launch that takes place when the floor beneath them opens like a trap door. The drop sends guests on an exhilarating, swift and splashy ride in a translucent tube that extends 20 feet over the side of the ship. Guests taller than 48 inches can enjoy the AquaDunk. Guests can also soak in the sun and the water fun with AquaLab, an interactive water playground open to kids age 3 and older. In the AquaLab, families can frolic among pop jets, geysers and bubblers in this fun and fanciful 1,800-square-foot space, while the Twist n Spout water slide gets them delightfully drenched with more than 250 feet of sliding fun of loops and turns. Twist n Spout is for guests between 38 and 64 inches tall. Tots up to age 3 can play in the new Nephews Splash Zone, a splash-a-second area dedicated to interactive fun and starring Donald Ducks mischievous nephews, Huey, Dewey and Louie. The area features water play with pop jets, squirting figures of Donald Ducks nephews and plenty of high seas hijinks.

Disney dining with an extra dash of Pixie Dust New restaurants and new technology are on the menu for the restaurants aboard Disney Magic. Animators Palate, one of the most popular restaurants on the Disney ships, is updated with all-new, animation-adorned walls and larger high-definition flat-screens to provide the best views of the animation magic that takes place all around. On every Disney Magic cruise, a heaping helping of entertainment is served up during the tremendously popular Animation Magic dinner show that celebrates the magic of Disney animation and allows families to create and participate in an innovative way. First unveiled on the Disney Fantasy, Animation Magic invites guests to create their own characters that magically spring to life, become fully animated and join the show onscreen. The vibrancy of Rio de Janeiro creates an energetic atmosphere in Cariocas, a new restaurant named after Donald Ducks parrot pal in The Three Caballeros, Jose Carioca. Festooned with lighted lanterns, the restaurant is designed to be fun by day, elegant by night, says Lanzisero. During the day, theres a festival theme and, when night falls, the atmosphere transforms into an after-hours scene of Rio de Janeiro, with softly illuminated lanterns flickering overhead. Cariocas has replaced Parrot Cay restaurant, formerly on the Disney Magic. Another new restaurant to the Disney Magic is Cabanas, a casual dining experience with food and beverage stations during daytime hours and a table-service restaurant during dinner. The Australian setting of the Disney-Pixar animated classic Finding Nemo inspires the dcor with hints of the films fishy and feathered friends throughout the restaurant. Cabanas, which replaced Topsider Buffet, has also expanded. More indoor space has been added, increasing the total square-footage of air-conditioned area by nearly 3,400 square feet to more than 9,460 square feet and a total of 455 seats.

The funs just begun when nighttime comes After a day of soaking in the sun on the decks and enjoying activities around the ship, Disney Magic offers big city-style fun in After Hours, the nighttime entertainment district. An all-new lineup of clubs includes venues for dancing, comedy, music and variety shows. After Hours replaces Beat Street, formerly on the Disney Magic. It was our goal to create a sleek and sophisticated adult experience in After Hours says Lanzisero. Each of the three clubs has a different feel that complements the others. Fathoms night club is a celebration of the sea that utilizes special effects, lighting and sound to create different atmospheres from early evening to night. For guests seeking a more low-key nighttime experience, there is Keys piano lounge. Whether guests want to relax with a cocktail and the soft sounds of a piano or wind down after an evening of dancing and revelry, Keys provides a refined retreat.

Open up, and say spa For the ultimate in relaxation and pampering, the enhanced Senses Spa & Salon offers many indulgences. Redesigned with a sleek and contemporary style, this haven of personal harmony provides an unmatched ocean-view environment. The size of the spa has been expanded by 725 square feet, to a total size of nearly 11,500 square feet. A new Smile Spa offers teeth whitening services, a new barbershop offers services for the gentlemen and the new Chill Spa provides treatments especially for teens 13 to 17 years of age.

Family fun in the D Lounge Another re-imagined area, D Lounge, offers a variety of family-friendly games, shows, dances and activities designed for all ages. Colorful and contemporary, this space encourages creative and kinetic fun. Families can enjoy entertainment, game shows and activities together in D Lounge which replaces Studio Sea, formerly on the Disney Magic.

Putting more room in staterooms Disney Cruise Line knows that traveling families always need more space, so features are included in each room to provide more usable space. Bed frames are elevated to provide storage space underneath. The bathrooms include the split-bath feature that Disney introduced to the cruise industryproviding even greater convenience to guests.

With Infamous: Second Son, Sony Has A Console Selling Exclusive - April 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The console wars are in full swing, and Microsoft gave gamers a lot to get excited about with the launch of Titanfall last month. Sony fired back with its own high-profile console exclusive launch last week, and its a fan favorite thats sure to get PlayStation gamers excited. Infamous: Second Son is a spin-off for what is arguably the best original superhero story ever released as a video game, and it delivers the kind of appeal that could bring new buyers to a platform at a time when supply has finally caught up with demand.

Second Son isnt tied directly to the main story line of the previous Infamous games; instead, it follows the exploits of another Conduit (Bio-terrorist to the government forces trying to stop them, or superpowered person to the rest of us) as he tries to liberate Seattle and track down his archnemesis to steal her powers. In the process, he acquires not just one, but multiple power sets, which makes it feel a bit like youre getting three games in one. Luckily, if youve been exploring the open world map much at all, getting acclimated and upgraded with each new power set wont feel like a chore, and despite being different enough, they all have enough similarities to make switching between using each natural enough.

The game is little more than an excuse to use a city as your playground for an extended super-powered romp, with a morality choice engine built in, and entertaining mini-games including the spray painting missions, which make clever use of the PS4s motion-sensing DualShock controller to mimic using an action spray paint can to deface walls and structures.

Sucker Punchs work on Infamous: Second Son admittedly feels familiar; you wont find too much here that wasnt already present in Infamous or Infamous 2, but that can be a very good thing, and in this case, it is; with strong legacy titles and characters, players arent looking for studios to reinvent the wheel, and in fact they mostly want another round of what worked best about the previous versions, with refinements and additions for varietys sake. Second Son delivers that almost perfectly, maintaining the charm of the original but offering plenty of new stuff to get excited about, and doing so with a story line thats fresh enough that gamers new to the franchise wont feel like theres too much of an information gap to overcome.

This is a title thats good enough to buy a console for. Thats not to say I necessarily see huge numbers of people seeking out the PS4 just to play Infamous: Second Son, but it is a game that will make those who do decide to pick Sony in the console wars feel justified in their decision. A lot of critics have called out the lack of must-have games for this round of new consoles, but the latest from Sucker Punch should start to quiet some of those voices.

Ellie's Hats: Donations to Va. child with cancer becomes charity - April 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    FALLS CHURCH, Va. -

The inclination of a public school teacher to help a kindergartner cope with cancer may turn into a full-fledged charity. This is the story of Ellies Hats.

Five-year-old Ellie Whitfield is now growing a short, but thick, crop of red hair on her head. Last year, Ellie was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, which required immediate chemotherapy. She lost all of her hair as a kindergartner, and started wearing hats every day to Woodburn Elementary School in Falls Church, Va.

Jennica Whitfield, Ellies mom, says her daughter sometimes feels quite unwell from the chemotherapy, but does not mind wearing hats.

Even when she was a baby, she loved to wear hats, said Jennica. Shes always been kind of a hat girl. So it was just kind of a natural transition for her. It wasnt a big deal to wear hats.

Ellies physical education teacher at Woodburn, Jay Coakley, noticed the kindergartner loved her hats, so he organized a hat drive, which vastly expanded Ellies choice of chapeaus.

Jennica Whitfield told us, She has, really, a lot of fun hats to wear. Every morning Ill say, Ellie what hat do you want to wear? And she says, Bring me my hats. And she takes the bag and she looks through, and decides what hats she wants to wear for the day.

Coakley used social media to spread the word about Ellies Hats, and an eighth grader in Loudoun County decided to try to get hat donations from all 50 states. That she accomplished in four-and-a-half days.

The surplus hats got donated to other families of young children getting cancer treatments at local hospitals and clinics.

And the feedback we got from the parents of the kids that got the hats was very positive, according to Coakley. So, in January, we started Ellies Hats, named after Ellie. And we collect and donate hats to children with cancer.
