Why Netflix Is Raising Prices - April 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Updated from 4:46 p.m. to include the comments from conference call infused throughout the story.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Netflix (NFLX) shares rose after the online entertainment company posted first-quarter results that were mixed, and ittopped 35 million streaming subscribers. The company also announced a price increase for new members.

Los Gatos, Calif.-based Netflix earned 86 cents a share on $1.27 billion in revenue for the quarter, as the company surpassed 35 million streaming subscribers, of which 34.38 million are paying. Streaming margins hit 25.2% in the first quarter. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters were expecting the company to earn 83 cents a share on $1.266 billion in revenue for the first quarter.

When the company announced its fourth-quarter results, Netflix said it expected to earn 78 cents a share for the first quarter, above the consensus estimate of 76 cents a share. WATCH: More market update videos on TheStreet TV The company ended the quarter with $8 million in free cash flow, up from $5 million in the fourth quarter of 2013. In the first quarter, Hastings noted that House of Cards, Season 2, which debuted in February, "attracted a huge audience that would make any cable or broadcast network happy," though he declined to give specific numbers. "During the quarter, we also announced our first original live-action comedy series, Grace and Frankie, featuring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. Already this quarter, we've brought members additional episodes of Turbo F.A.S.T. On May 30, we will launch Season 2 of the Ricky Gervais series, Derek, in most territories and on June 6th, we'll debut Season 2 of Orange is the New Black, giving our members around the globe the opportunity to immerse themselves in this rich and engaging world. The trailer will give you a sense of what's in store for this tremendously popular show." In the letter, Hastings also talked about the upcoming summer line-up, which includes Hemlock Grove Season 2, the animated comedy series BoJack Horseman and the final six episodes of The Killing. Recent set-top boxes have been kind to Netflix, including the introduction of the Amazon (AMZN) Fire TV, announced earlier this month. "We continue to see more capable Internet television devices launched. Chromecast, Roku Streaming Stick, and Amazon Fire TV (on which we expect to support voice search later this year) push the quality of experience and price points for adapter products," Hastings wrote in the letter. On the call, Hastings was complimentary of the Fire TV and Amazon Prime Instant Video, noting he is a Prime member, and he sees Prime as a complimentary service to Netflix. "It's a great relationship all around," Hastings said on the call. It appears as if consumers are taking to Netflix's content offerings, as Hastings cited a Morgan Stanley survey from March, which had 17% of respondentsciting Netflix as offering the best original programming, "second only to HBO, and ahead of Showtime and Starz. To have achieved this recognition in our second year of original content creation is exciting and we are optimistic about building on our initial success." Turning to the price increase, Hastings said there will be an increase for new members of $1 or $2, depending on the country. "Existing members would stay at current pricing (e.g. $7.99 in the U.S.) for a generous time period," Hastings noted. "These changes will enable us to acquire more content and deliver an even better streaming experience." On the call, Netflix said that most of the increase in revenue from the price increases would go towards spending on original content. The revenue increase in the short-term would be "modest." Hastings also took a shot at AT&T in the letter, noting the company's DSL service, U-Verse, is exceptionally slow: "Our long-term ISP performance index shows some positive data, and some surprising data, particularly in the U.S. The positive is that Comcast is providing a much improved Netflix experience to their broadband subscribers, and now nearly all cable Internet households receive great quality Internet video. The surprising news is that AT&T fiber-based U-verse has lower performance than many DSL ISPs, such as Frontier, CenturyLink & Windstream. This reinforces our view that connectivity to the broader Internet is critical to the quality of experience consumers receive. The 249 customer comments on AT&T's anti-Netflix blog post indicate that AT&T customers expect a good quality Netflix experience given how much they pay AT&T for their Internet service. It is free and easy for AT&T to interconnect directly with Netflix and quickly improve their customers' experience, should AT&T so desire." Shares of Netflix closed the regular session higher, gaining 0.80% to close at $349.49. --Written by Chris Ciaccia in New York >Contact by Email.

Second Battle of Fallujah – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - April 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Second Battle of Fallujah (Operation Phantom Fury) Part of the Iraq War U.S. Marines from Mike Battery, 4th Battalion, 14th Marines, operate the 155mm M198 howitzer at Camp Fallujah, November 2004 Date 7 November 23 December 2004[1] Location Fallujah, Iraq Result Coalition victory Belligerents United States of America Iraq United Kingdom Iraqi insurgency al-Qaeda in Iraq Commanders and leaders Richard F. Natonski James Mattis James Cowan Abdullah al-Janabi Omar Hussein Hadid Strength 10,500 troops[2] 2,000 troops[2] 850 troops[3]

    Total: 13,350 troops

    Iraqi: 8 killed, 43 wounded[7] British: 4 killed, 10 wounded[8][9][10] Total: 107 killed, 613 wounded

The Second Battle of Fallujah code-named Operation Al-Fajr (Arabic, "the dawn") and Operation Phantom Fury was a joint American, Iraqi, and British offensive in November and December 2004, considered the highest point of conflict in Fallujah during the Iraq War. It was led by the U.S. Marine Corps against the Iraqi insurgency stronghold in the city of Fallujah and was authorized by the U.S.-appointed Iraqi Interim Government. The U.S. military called it "some of the heaviest urban combat U.S. Marines have been involved in since the Battle of Hu City in Vietnam in 1968."[14][15]

This operation was the second major operation in Fallujah. Earlier, in April 2004, coalition forces fought the First Battle of Fallujah in order to capture or kill insurgent elements considered responsible for the deaths of a Blackwater Security team. When coalition forces (mostly U.S. Marines) fought into the center of the city, the Iraqi government requested that the city's control be transferred to an Iraqi-run local security force, which then began stockpiling weapons and building complex defenses across the city through mid-2004.[16] The second battle was the bloodiest battle of the entire Iraq War, and is notable for being the first major engagement of the Iraq War fought solely against insurgents rather than the forces of the former Ba'athist Iraqi government, which was deposed in 2003.

In February 2004, control of Fallujah and the surrounding area in the Al-Anbar province was transferred from the U.S. 82nd Airborne Division to the 1st Marine Division. Shortly afterward, on 31 March 2004, four American private military contractors from Blackwater USA were ambushed and killed in the city. Images of their mutilated bodies were broadcast around the world.[17]

Within days, U.S. Marine Corps forces launched Operation Vigilant Resolve (4 April 2004) to take back control of the city from insurgent forces. On 28 April 2004, Operation Vigilant Resolve ended with an agreement where the local population was ordered to keep the insurgents out of the city.[16] The Fallujah Brigade, composed of local Iraqis under the command of Muhammed Latif, a former Ba'athist general, was allowed to pass through coalition lines and take over the city.

Insurgent strength and control began to grow to such an extent that by 24 September 2004, a senior U.S. official told ABC News that catching Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi, said to be in Fallujah, was now "the highest priority," and estimated his troops at 5,000 men, mostly non-Iraqis.[18]

Before beginning their attack, U.S. and Iraqi forces had established checkpoints around the city to prevent anyone from entering the city, and to intercept insurgents attempting to flee.

In addition, overhead imagery was used to prepare maps of the city for use by the attackers. American units were augmented by Iraqi interpreters to assist them in the planned fight. After weeks of withstanding air strikes and artillery bombardment, the militants holed up in the city appeared to be vulnerable to direct attack.

Small Slump Not Deterring Talented Tribe - April 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

April 20, 2014 - International League (IL) Indianapolis Indians The Indianapolis Indians are seeking the franchise's first back-to-back-to-back International League (IL) West Division championships and just the second three-peat title in team history. A tall order at first glance, but with 11 wins in their first 16 games, claiming a spot in the record books may not be such a pipe dream.

Indians broadcaster Will Flemming, who has helped call each of the Tribe's IL West titles from 2012-13, said this year's Tribe squad is one of the best he's ever seen.

And there's already a track record to prove it.

"It's always impressive to get off to a good start on the road," Flemming said after the Indians swept Columbus at Huntington Park and won two of three in Toledo. "Just look at the roster, the talent level is higher than that of the other teams in our division."

From an up-and-coming power-hitting prospect Andrew Lambo, to long-time team veterans Matt Hague and Chase d'Arnaud, Indianapolis never faces the issue of fielding a strong lineup. Rather, the challenge is finding a way to get everyone on the field.

"That doesn't happen by accident," Flemming said.

The Indians broadcaster attributed this continuous influx of talent to the front office personnel of the team's parent club, the Pittsburgh Pirates. While the Major League Bucs have enjoyed a high level of success in the National League's Central Division, the Pirates franchise has also maintained competitive rosters throughout the levels of their minor league system.

And the Indians are a prime example.

During the 2013-14 offseason, Pittsburgh made key acquisitions that have helped bolster their Triple-A affiliate's lineup, including outfielder Chris Dickerson and infielders Chris McGuiness and Brent Morel. Each of the three veterans boast major league experience and remain on-call for a return to the Bigs, but in the meantime have combined to score 26 runs with 20 RBI.

"You can't say enough about those three players," Flemming said. "Day in and day out they just keep coming up with big hits and driving in important runs for this first-place [Indians] team."

The girls' lacrosse season is in full swing, complete with plenty of new story lines among local teams.

The area boasts one new varsity squad, a developing second-year team, a coaching change and a lot of new additions to the familiar local powers.

    Nashoba

The Chieftains will likely have another strong year. Graduation dealt a little hit, but athletes choosing other sports might have hurt a little bit more.

"We have two of three starters from last year that can't play this year," Nashoba co-head coach Tammy Fortune said. "We have a smaller team, with only 16 girls. A lot of them are starters and the others are getting a lot of playing time, so every player has the chance to make an impact in nearly every game.

Sentinel and Enterprise staff photos can be ordered by visiting our SmugMug site.

Brittany Joseph returns after leading the team in scoring last year. Abbie McCaffrey and Sam O'Connor round out the remaining senior captains. Kaitlyn Thorogood and Karleigh Elkins are key contributors, while Cori Gillen is a first-year senior who finds herself in a starting role.

Miami City Ballets season to keep dancers, audience in mind - April 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A Miami City Ballet season is about challenging and satisfying the dancers. And, of course, the audience.

Thats what Lourdes Lopez says about programming the 2014-15 season her third as artistic director and the second she has selected for the company.

I keep saying that its about works the dancers should be doing, she said. You must always keep in mind they have a limited time to do what they do. You want them to be able to leave their careers saying Wow, I did a lot.

Audience members, too, deserve a diverse and boundary-stretching season, she said. Theyre not going to love every work, Lopez said, but she aims to show them how fantastic dance is. There are no limits. It can be anything.

She must be doing something right. The number of tickets sold in 2013-14 jumped 17 percent over 2012-13.

The upcoming season features four company premieres, including a new work choreographed for the dancers by Justin Peck. Hes the 26-year-old choreographer and New York City Ballet dancer whose pas de deux Chutes and Ladders was performed this season.

    Season opener

Opening the season in November at the Kravis Center is John Crankos full-evening story ballet Romeo and Juliet. It has been programmed only once before, in 2011.

As with most story ballets, the success of Romeo and Juliet will depend on the skills of the lead couple, said Steven Caras, a former New York City Ballet dancer who conducts pre-performance talks for the Kravis Centers dance shows.

A huge responsibility is placed on the principals, he said. The audience needs to fall in love with them immediately, or it becomes tedious. Miami City Ballet has the talent to fill the bill, if the casting is right, he said.

First Listen: Death, 'Death III' - April 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

hide captionDeath will release the archival collection Death III on April 22.

Death will release the archival collection Death III on April 22.

The Detroit band Death spent a chunk of the '70s making vital music that went almost entirely unheard for decades. Inspired in part by Alice Cooper, brothers Bobby, David and Dannis Hackney made furious, hooky proto-punk music that existed alongside bands like the MC5, yet never reached an audience. When it finally saw national release back in 2009, Death's music seemed to emerge from an alternate-universe canon.

Five years ago, ...For the Whole World to See surfaced as a frequently masterful lost album from the mid-'70s, and the years since have spawned a second collection of recordings (Spiritual, Mental, Physical) in 2011, a documentary (A Band Called Death) in 2012, and now a decades-spanning compilation titled Death III. Taken together, they paint a picture of a group that deserves its new-found place in rock history.

Given that its nine songs span nearly two decades these recordings were made in 1975, 1976, 1980 and 1992 Death III can't help but project an odds-and-ends vibe. Two tracks, "Introduction by David" and "First Snowfall in Detroit," are instrumental, while others convey the raw feel of home demos. But the recordings still capture the creativity of the minds that made them: From 1980, the skittishly paranoid "North Street" chronicles the perils that await the have-nots in Detroit, while "We Are Only People" spends nearly nine minutes transforming from a trippy, meandering seether to a boldly rocking epic.

Until recently, Death's story was one of obscurity and disappointment: an aborted major-label record deal, ill-fated attempts to regroup as The 4th Movement in the late '70s and, most sadly, the death of guitarist David Hackney from lung cancer in 2000. It took bassist Bobby Hackney's sons stumbling across some tapes in the family attic for Death's story to even begin to be told, but now there's a true archive to complement its amazing resurrection. As anyone who's seen the reconstituted Death on the live stage can tell you, it may well be time for some new recordings welcome additions to an unlikely story that almost went untold.
