Local Product Ben Lively Highlights Second-Half Roster Overhaul - June 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

June 17, 2014 - Southern League (SL) Pensacola Blue Wahoos PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Blue Wahoos will look much different when the second half of the Southern League season opens play on Thursday, June 19th. Most notably, Gulf Breeze product and Cincinnati's 2013 fourth round pick Ben Lively. The right-hander headlines a list of seven call-ups from Bakersfield that will join the Wahoos to start the second half as Pensacola looks to improve on its fifth place first half finish.

Lively, drafted last year out of the University of Central Florida, was named the starter of the California League All-Star game after leading the league in nearly every pitching category through the first half. He was the league leader in ERA (2.28), wins (10), strikeouts (95) and WHIP (0.92). He was among the leaders in opponent batting average (3rd, .201) and innings pitched (79). Lively began the season allowing just one run over his first five outings. Entering the season he was ranked as the Reds No. 12 prospect according to MLB.com.

The Blue Wahoos will also get the addition of 2012 first round pick and Reds No. 3 prospect Jesse Winker. He was hitting .317 with 13 home runs and 49 RBI over 53 games in the Bakersfield outfield. He ranked among the league leaders in batting average (8th), on-base percentage (3rd, .426), slugging percentage (3rd, .580) and home runs per at bat (2nd, 1/15.77). With the addition of Winker, the Blue Wahoos now have four of the organization's top five prospect on the roster. The others are Robert Stephenson (No. 1), Michael Lorenzen (No. 3) and Carlos Contreras (No. 5).

Joining Winker in the outfield will be Kyle Waldrop and Marquez Smith. Waldrop was Bakersfield's top hitter with a league-best .359 average. He was also among the league leaders in doubles with 20. Smith is returning to Pensacola where he played in 21 games a year ago. He was the team leader in home runs with 15, good for second in the league, and RBI with 67 while hitting .298 for the Blaze.

The bullpen will get the addition of RHP Carlos Gonzalez. He had a tremendous first half out of the Bakersfield bullpen with a 0.57 ERA. He ranked third among California League closers with 15 saves.

Other additions include infielders Ryan Wright and Seth Mejias-Brean. Wright, a fifth round pick in 2011, spent most of his time at second base and hit .311 with eight home runs and 41 RBI. Mejias-Brean, drafted in the eighth round in 2012, has spent most of the year at third base with a .300 average and 11 home runs and 45 RBI.

To make room for the additions, Justin Freeman, Rey Navarro, Steve Selsky and Juan Silverio have been transferred to Triple-A Louisville. Mikey O'Brien was transferred to Single-A Bakersfield. Ray Chang and Josh Fellhauer will both begin the second half on the disabled list with undisclosed injuries. Left-handed reliever Lee Hyde was released by the organization.

The players will be available to the media following a team workout beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday morning at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium. The Blue Wahoos will open play on the second half of the season at home Thursday against the first half north division champion Huntsville Stars. It will be a Seville Quarter Thirsty Thursday with additional drink specials made available throughout the game as part of the Wahoo Waddle. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m., gates open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are still available for the entire series at BlueWahoos.com or by calling (850) 934-8444.

'How to Train Your Dragon 2' soars, with mild turbulence, reviews say - June 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Where does a franchise called "How to Train Your Dragon" go after said dragon is already trained? The second installment in the DreamWorks Animation series, written and directed by Dean DeBlois and featuring the voices of Jay Baruchel and Cate Blanchett, responds to that conundrum with an expanded scope and even snazzier visuals.

According to film critics, "How to Train Your Dragon 2" hits a few rough spots, but largely flies high.

The Associated Press' Jocelyn Noveck wrote that moviegoers will be "happily surprised at the new twists ['Dragon 2'] takes -- sort of like getting an unexpected second candy bar in the vending machine. 'How to Train Your Dragon 2' doesn't play it safe, and that's why it's the rare sequel that doesn't feel somewhat stale."

In addition to offering "visual delights," she said, the movie "travels into darker areas than its predecessor, displaying an admirable maturity. Many animated tales involve dashing acts of bravery, but rarely do they show the possible tragic consequences of such acts."

The Village Voice's Stephanie Zacharek said that in some ways, "Dragon 2" is "inferior" to its predecessor: "The plot is needlessly busy, and much of the action is more manic and indistinct. But 'How to Train Your Dragon 2' cuts deeper than the first picture ... and there are a few sequences of cartoon grandeur."

She added that "DeBlois keeps the story moving efficiently enough" and delivers "some finely tuned dramatic moments, including a tragic twist that might be too intense for really little kids." Best of all, the movie marks the return of the trusty dragon steed Toothless, "one of the most beautifully designed characters in modern animation, perhaps in all of animation, period."

Entertainment Weekly's Joe McGovern similarly wrote, "While the original movie benefited from narrative simplicity and an admirable lack of villains, this one paints the screen with too many characters and frequent diversions from the main story, but nevertheless serves up a bountiful and sugary feast for the 3-D-bespectacled eyes."

Djimon Hounsou's bad guy is "the vision of banal cartoon evil," and "the moral takeaway is cut-and-dried this time," he said, but on the plus side, "the movie's visual scope is magnificent" and the "offbeat" score works. In sum, "[t]he flight path needs straightening, but this is still a franchise that knows how to fly."

The New York Post's Lou Lumenick called "Dragon 2" a "worthwhile if not-quite-as-delightful sequel" that "offers some stunningly beautiful sequences and an engaging, if at times quite dark, story line." He adds that "[t]here is some wonderful stuff here," including a love-song duet between Blanchett and Gerard Butler.

"At the risk of being branded a heretic," Lumenick continued, "I found their unpolished singing preferable to the Broadway belting in 'Frozen' -- and, as a coming-of-age story, 'Dragon 2' is a lot fresher and more inventive than Pixar's thematically similar 'Brave.'"

June 16, 2014 - South Atlantic League (SAL) Delmarva Shorebirds Salisbury, MD - The South Atlantic League has announced several additions to the All-Star rosters, honoring two more Shorebirds, Trey Mancini and Dylan Rheault. Mancini and Rheault will join their five teammates already selected to the game in Hickory: Mike Yastrzemski, Drew Dosch, Hunter Harvey, Sebastian Vader and Jimmy Yacabonis.

Mancini finished the first half with the Shorebirds' best batting average at .317, which also ranks seventh in the league. The first baseman has been a consistent force in the lineup, playing in 68 of the team's 69 games thus far. Mancini's 85 hits are second in the league, behind only Hagerstown's Wilmer Difo. The Orioles 8th round pick from 2013, Mancini is second on the Shorebirds with 42 RBIs.

Getting off to a slow start, Mancini turned his season around after April. On April 23rd, Mancini was batting just .208 through the first 18 games of the year. The Notre Dame product batted .373 in the month of May. From May 22nd to June 6th, Mancini caught fire as he strung together a 17-game hitting streak in which he batted .429 with 11 mult-hit games in a three-week span. Mancini also reached base safely in 29 consecutive games from May 9th to June 6th, the longest such streak in the South Atlantic League this season.

Dylan Rheault has been a crucial part of the Shorebirds' stellar bullpen unit. In 16 relief appearances, the right-hander reliever is 6-1 with a 3.41 ERA and two saves to his credit. On April 4th, Rheault recorded his first save of his professional career, helping Delmarva to their first win of the season. From April 10th to April 26th, Rheault rattled off five consecutive wins in five relief appearances. The Canadian native pitched 12 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings from April 14th to May 7th, lowering his ERA to 0.98 at one point.

Previously, the Shorebirds sent five players to the 2011 All-Star Game hosted at Perdue Stadium. The Northern and Southern Divisions will square off on Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm at L.P. 'I could honestly use another 20 years' - June 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Back in theearly-1990s, Tom and Sue Becker were driving the back roads of Jackson County, looking for an acreage.

They happened uponold Washington Township Public School No. 2, a one-room school perched on an acre of hillside with fantastic sunsets.

They bought the property, rehabbing the inside and building additions. One addition was a second-story "bump up," containingtwo bedrooms and a bath. Anothercontaining a family room was built on the south side. And, most recently, Tom built a 14-foot by 20-foot stone gallery with skylight on the southwest side as Sue'sart studio.

They also worked on the yard to thepoint that it is now completely planted, filled with flowers, walkways, walls and about 10 of Sue's mosaic sculptures, including a five-foot cat and a rooster fountain.

You can see the Beckers' gallery and yard from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 22, when their property will be one of five open for tours in the Bellevue, Iowa, area as afundraiser for the library.

When the couple bought theirplace, the land was covered with weedy brush as wellas a fewold oaks. They kept the oaks, but foot by foot, they reclaimed thebrush.

"We started at the top, and then would go 20 more feet and then 50 more feet," Sue said. "I've got the bones of the garden where I want (them), but I could honestly use another 20 years. I'm glad we have only one acre."

Their first plantings werefood plots raised beds for broccoli and other vegetables, plus asparagus, raspberries, rhubarb and fruit trees.

Then while Sue was planting flowers,Tom, a science teacher at Maquoketa High School, began building stone and brick paths and walls. Son Beau, now graduated from college, helped too.

Instead of spendingmoney on "fancy" plants,Sue stuck withcommon varieties, dividing them as they grew.

Vancouver Volcanoes Selected to Host 2014 IBL Playoffs - June 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

June 13, 2014 - International Basketball League (IBL) At top of his game, Andre Murray gets a second nod for POTW award

It seems as though five time veteran of the Volcanoes is hard to stop, at the top of his game and top of the In The Game Watch List, 6'2" G Andre Murray is the POTW for a second time this season with outstanding efficiency leading the league in points at 33.2ppg, assists at 8.2 per game and 3.8 steals to go with it.

A four time All Star and 2012 IBL MVP, so far 2014 has produced the best performance from Murray yet, perhaps of his career. "I think I am driven this season, my main goal is to get back overseas this fall, I worked hard in the off season and making sure I have the right mind set conditioning, and eating better."

Murray got his start after attending an open tryout encouraged by a former college teammate, and speaks highly of the team owner and Assistant Coach Bryan Hunter whom he plays for. "I have grown to like the team and the community; there is no place I would rather play for than Vancouver. The league provides exposure and I like the competition, I saw it moving forward in a good direction, so I continue to play in the league."

At the top of the watch list all season, the player wearing MJ's number stays humble as a part of a team on a quest for a championship. "It means a lot to be at the top of the list, I think I am just working hard, staying dedicated to my craft. The guys push me hard in practice and so do the coaches, I can thank them for the efforts for what I have been doing so far," Murray acknowledged.

Higher averages than when he got the nod the first time this season, and against tougher opponents, it was a clear decision. In the last two, back to back games for Murray,he produced 43 points and 11 assists in the win against the Sabres, followed up by 36 total points and 10 assists in another win versus the Chinooks, impressive to say the least from the Portland State University Alumni.

"I think at this point after losing four out of five, my mentality switched gears, I just leave everything on the court. I am in constant attack mode and when I am not hitting my shots I am looking for other guys inside or outside to make the shot.

"Andre is really hard to guard, he is really good with the ball and he does a great job defensively as well. In our sets he gets a lot off on ball screens, but he's also out in space, we put him away from the ball a lot so defense has to rotate on to him. He's so good east to west with his dribble, and when he finishes the way he does he scores at will. I wouldn't want to play against us because we can really score the ball, and Murray is just one of our ways." Navarro says about his star player and the feeling seems to be mutual.

"I think when you have a Coach that puts you in a position to succeed as well have faith in you it makes the job really easy. I have been playing with him (Coach Navarro) for years now, as the assistant and now Head Coach for a second season, I understand most of his schemes and what he expects of me. I think I am just enjoying playing the game, and trying to get these wins."

The Volcanoes will try for two more this weekend as they see the Sabres and then take on Houston, the Lone Star Strikers, where Murray will look to continue his reign as the number one player to watch, gaining momentum into the post season.

BofA Said to Lose Some Equities Staff to Rivals - June 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Bank of America Corp.s equities unit lost about half a dozen members in recent weeks including John OBrien, head of New York derivatives sales, who joined Deutsche Bank AG, said two people with knowledge of the matter.

OBrien, a managing director, previously was co-head of equity-derivatives sales, said the people, who ask not to be named because the moves are private. Michael Kurd, a derivatives trader, was among at least two employees who went to Deutsche Bank, which is based in Frankfurt, and other colleagues left for UBS AG and Morgan Stanley.

Wall Street firms, contending with stagnant trading revenue amid low volatility and new regulations, are adjusting their teams and making selective hires. Charlotte, North Carolina-based Bank of America, the second-biggest U.S. lender, posted $1.15 billion in equities sales and trading revenue in the first quarter, little changed from a year earlier.

Were seeing extraordinary activity at this time compared to the last couple years -- theres a bit more appetite to upgrade desks, Michael Karp, chief executive officer of New York-based recruitment firm Options Group Inc., said in a phone interview. Bonus awards have been announced and so this tends to be the time when people move.

Lauren Sclafani and Andrew Guman, Bank of America equity-research salespeople, joined Zurich-based UBS, the people said. Kevin Barry, a technology trader and seven-year Merrill Lynch veteran, joined New York-based Morgan Stanley. Rachel Eisenpress, a junior Bank of America equity-sales employee, became a business-development associate at Juice Press, a New York-based purveyor of organic smoothies, soups, vegan desserts and juice-cleanse programs, the people said.

Bank of America also hired three managing directors in recent weeks, according to one of the people with knowledge of the matter. Whitfield Hines, formerly of HSBC Holdings Plc, will be head of flow equity derivative sales in Europe, Middle East and Africa, or the EMEA region. Roy Martins, who previously worked at Credit Suisse Group AG (CSGN), was named head of execution services distribution for EMEA, and Lloyd Rosenbaum was hired from JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) for a sales trading role.

The employees didnt return calls or e-mails seeking comment. Zia Ahmed, a Bank of America spokesman, said the company had no comment.

Rally Falls Short for 'Crabs - June 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

June 12, 2014 - Florida State League (FSL) Charlotte Stone Crabs FORT MYERS, FL (June 11, 2014) - With no chance at winning the first half in the Florida State League's South Division, the Stone Crabs can strictly focus on player development before the second half begins next week. Wins and losses will be reset soon enough, so any victory is just an added bonus while Jared Sandberg and his staff can assess the present team as it is presently constructed. One night after getting shellacked by the Miracle 10-0 for their third straight defeat, the Stone Crabs nearly pulled off the comeback of the season in the second game of the series. However, four runs in the ninth wasn't enough, and a 7-6 loss sent the `Crabs to four games under .500 for the first time since April 28.

Hammond Stadium was playing like a bandbox on Wednesday night, and the hitters took advantage of the favorable wind blowing out right away. Austin Pruitt surrendered a one out double to Travis Harrison in the second before Stuart Turner banged a 3-1 pitch over the wall in left to put the Miracle ahead 2-0. After picking up just two measly singles in the first three innings against All-Star Jose Berrios, the Stone Crabs tied it up in the fourth. A leadoff walk to Leonardo Reginatto and strikeouts by Patrick Leonard and Kes Carter allowed Maxx Tissenbaum to crush his first home run of the year to right to tie the game at two.

The Miracle countered with a quick punch in the home fourth following Adam Brett Walker's leadoff single. Two pitches later it was designated hitter Mike Gonzales, who hit a moonshot deep to right for another two run blast and a 4-2 Miracle lead. Pruitt lasted five innings and didn't allow another run the rest of the night, and Kevin Brandt delivered two perfect frames in the sixth and seventh while racking up four strikeouts along the way.

Facing Nick Sawyer in the eighth, the Miracle didn't need to do much with the bats to add to the 4-2 lead. Three walks and a sacrifice bunt by Aderling Mejia loaded the bases with one out for Gonzales, who worked a walk for his third run batted in and a 5-2 lead. Four more pitches out of the zone to Harrison scored another run to make it 6-2 before Ryan Garton entered from the bullpen to get the final two outs, including an RBI groundout by Dalton Hicks that made it 7-2 heading into the ninth.

Leonard started the inning with a routine groundball to shortstop Jorge Polanco, who booted it for an error. A line single by Carter and a groundout to first by Tissenbaum put runners at second and third with one out. Jonathan Quionez then placed an infield single on the grass in front of first, and they were loaded up for Josh Sale. An RBI fielder's choice groundout brought in Leonard to make it 7-3 before Sale took second base on defensive indifference. A walk to Julian Ridings loaded the bases and allowed Tyler Goeddel to drive in a pair with a two run single underneath the glove of the second baseman Mejia. Representing the tying run, Goeddel stole second base, but Turner's throw from behind the plate skipped into center field, scoring Ridings to make it 7-6 and moving Goeddel to third as the tying run. Tyler Jones then put the positive feelings to rest by blowing a 2-2 fastball past Tommy Coyle to end the ballgame.

NOTES: The Stone Crabs are now 0-21 when trailing after the eighth inningall four runs in the ninth were unearned because of the Polanco errorPruitt (3-3) hadn't allowed a home run in his previous four starts, a span of 22.2 IPBrandt and Tissenbaum were both late additions to the South Division All-Star Teamthe `Crabs had just two baserunners from the fifth until the ninth, and neither runner advanced past firstthe loss marks just the third time in 11 games this month the Stone Crabs scored more than five runs.

The series wraps up at Hammond Stadium on Thursday night at 7:05 PM when Reinaldo Lopez (4-2, 3.39 ERA) looks to end the losing skid against Matt Tomshaw (6-1, 1.95 ERA). You can follow all the action by listening to the game on http://www.stonecrabsbaseball.com via TuneIn Radio, or tuning into 91.7 FM-WVIJ in the Port Charlotte area. LA Galaxy Held by Chivas USA - June 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

June 8, 2014 - Major League Soccer (MLS) Los Angeles Galaxy CARSON, Calif. - Chivas USA came out with great energy and gave the LA Galaxy something of a scare in the early minutes of the season's second SuperClasico, then held off their cross-stadium rival for a 1-1 draw, just the third time they've avoided a loss in the series in 13 meetings since their playoff series in 2009.

Erick "Cubo" Torresgave Chivas a 20th-minute lead with his ninth goal of the season, butGyasi Zardesheaded the Galaxy even 15 minutes later, and the rest of the game was played primarily in and in front of Chivas' box.

The Galaxy (4-3-5) extended their unbeaten streak to four games - and to seven in the SuperClasico, since the Goats' victory in May 2012 - and improved their record against Chivas to 21-4-8 in all competitions.

Chivas (2-7-5) are winless in four games and have won just once in 13 since their opening-night victory over Chicago.

LA were without captainRobbie Keane, who is with Ireland's national team, so head coach Bruce Arena went withSamueland Zardes up top and switched to a diamond midfield after three games in a flat formation.Landon Donovanwas at the point of the diamond whileMarcelo Sarvas- making his first start in seven weeks after returning from a knee injury - slotted in on the left. Elsewhere for LA,Robbie Rogersmade his first start of the year, at right back.

Chivas mirrored the Galaxy's formation, with Wilmer Cabrera making four changes from his lineup in last weekend's defeat to Philadelphia. The most notable additions were first-choice center backsCarlos BocanegraandBobby Burling, returning from a hamstring irriation and red-card suspension, respectively.

GoalkeeperDan Kennedytook sole possession of Chivas' appearances record with his 124th, passing Jonathan Bornstein and Francisco Mendoza.

The Galaxy had most of the possession - some 65.5 percent for the game - but the early chances belonged to Chivas, who threatened three times before Torres struck. Rogers shut down Torres in LA's box in the sixth minute, andJaime Penedoleaped to deny Barrera in the 10th and pushed aside Bocanegra's sharp header from a Rosales corner kick in the 17th.

Torres struck three minutes later, giving the Goats their first lead in three games and first in the SuperClasico since their last victory in the series, in May 2012.

Martin Rivero set up the goal, his pass from the right splitting two defenders and deflecting off Leonardo to Torres, who cut back inside Leonardo and placed the ball inside the left post.
