Council says home can be remodeled: Proposal on Verdun Avenue in San Mateo gets OK despite neighborhood dispute - July 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The San Mateo City Council approved a residential proposal to build a second-story addition that would obscure part of a neighbors view of the Bay but, in doing so, was forced to confront a public divide over how to make room for growing families while maintaining homeowners interests in their properties.

On Monday, the council considered Verdun Avenue resident Karen Trudells request to appeal the Planning Commissions June decision to allow her downhill neighbors, Terri and Michael Schmier, from a remodel that would block her bedroom and part of her living room views.

While the Schmiers said their plans are aimed at making room for the likelihood that their parents may soon need to move in with them, Trudell said she would be left to bare the cost of losing a view shes enjoyed for 20 years.

Numerous residents with views said they feared the case would set a precedent and requested clarification of the citys single-family design guidelines, which were established 12 years ago in response to a similar proposal on the same street.

The current guidelines include provisions for those who remodel to respect a neighbors existing views and that additions should result in equitable views for both homeowners.

Councilman Jack Matthews, who served on the Planning Commission when the guidelines were developed, said uniformly preventing second-story additions when it blocks a neighbors view wouldnt be realistic.

I think thats a very regressive way at looking at things. Were a community experiencing change and we need to embrace that and allow for it to happen in a very positive way, Matthews said. One thing that hasnt worked so well, is that its pretty hard on the applicants and the neighbors when you cant reach a compromise.

The Schmiers bought their home, with 1,700-square-feet of livable space, 14 years ago and recently applied to build an 889-square-foot second-story addition with a 149-square-foot patio atop the street side portion of their home.

The Schmiers said theyve revised their plans four times, incurred $18,000 in city permit fees and added it would be more costly to find a new home than to remodel. But Trudell, whos lived on Verdun Avenue for 20 years, said losing her view would mean losing equity in her home.

What you need to know about the AFC West - July 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

In the West lies the AFCs powerhouse division, one that sent three teams into the playoffs after last season.

The Denver Broncos and Peyton Manning gobbled up all the headlines, records and awards except for the one that mattered, the Lombardi Trophy. The Kansas City Chiefs started strong and faded badly, the San Diego Chargers rode a 4-1 finish into the postseason and the Oakland Raiders well, theyre the Raiders. This year, can Peyton Manning work magic again? What will Andy Reid and Alex Smith do in their second season? Are the Chargers going to build on the 2013 finish? Are the Raiders going to improve?

    Denver Broncos

Top story line The Broncos found out that a great defense is really important to a team with aspirations of winning (not just appearing in) Super Bowls. To that end, John Fox and John Elway went a little wild on defensive players in free agency.

Key acquisition So many choices but it probably will be Aqib Talib, especially if the road back to the Super Bowl involves playing New England again.

Biggest loss Who in his right mind leaves Mannings team? Well, a number of players did and one of them was wide receiver Eric Decker, who headed for the Jets.

Kansas City Chiefs Top story line It all ended so horribly as the Chiefs converted a 9-0 start into a 2-5 stretch run in Andy Reids first season as coach. They lost a wild-card game to Indy and now get ready for another season in a division that sent three teams to the playoffs. Blerg.

Key acquisition Outside linebacker Dee Ford, the 23rd pick in the draft, should help bolster the defense.

Biggest loss Its a tie: Branden Albert, Jon Asamoah and Geoff Schwartz are all gone after a season in which they combined for 2,022 snaps.

Oakland Raiders Top story line While the Raiders work out whether theyll share the 49ers stadium, the only AFC West team to miss the postseason was busy in the offseason.

What you need to know about the AFC South - July 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Andrew Luck has taken the Indianapolis Colts a bit deeper into the playoffs in each of his first two seasons in the NFL.

Now, it gets tougher after a 2013 season in which the Colts won 11 games and the other three teams combined for 13 wins.

The Houston Texans, under new coach Bill OBrien, are determined to put up a better fight, with J.J. Watt and Brian Cushing healthy and joined on defense by the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, Jadeveon Clowney. As for the Colts, Arthur Jones is a nice acquisition on a defense that will be missing a key player because of a four-game suspension. On offense, Luck is Luck, but the Colts need Trent Richardson to prove he isnt a big bust. As for the Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars, the phrase works in progress comes to mind.

    Houston Texans

Top story line Bill OBrien, aka the leagues toughest-looking coach since Bill Cowher, arrives to try to take the division back from the Indianapolis Colts.

Key acquisition Jadeveon Clowney, the No. 1 draft pick, will bolster a defense geared toward regaining its elite status and stopping Luck. Unfortunately, it isnt certain when hell play yet as he recovers from sports hernia surgery in June.

Biggest loss It may just be Andre Johnson, who is unhappy and may be a holdout.

    Indianapolis Colts

Top story line The Colts were forced to adjust to injuries on the fly and still Andrew Luck took them to a division title and to a playoff win in his second season. It figures to be more difficult to take the AFC South this year.

Key acquisition Defensive end Arthur Jones comes over from the Baltimore Ravens, joining Chuck Pagano, who coached him in Baltimore.

What you need to know about the NFC West - July 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

With apologies to the NFC North, welcome to the NFC West, the NFLs black-and-blue division.

This is the place where the coaches of the top two teams plain dont feel the love for one another, a 10-6 team failed to make the playoffs and a 7-9 team is on the rise and capable of knocking any of the top three off.

In short, this is where the fun is.

    Arizona Cardinals

Top story line Despite a 10-6 record last season, the Cardinals were shut out of postseason play. Such is the burden of playing in the NFC West.

Key acquisition Left tackle Jared Veldheer may have missed 11 games with a triceps injury in 2013, but hes a big upgrade for Coach Bruce Arians and quarterback Carson Palmer.

Biggest loss Karlos Dansby, one of the best coverage linebackers in the NFL, left for Cleveland.

St. Louis Rams Top story line Finally, theyre finished taking the draft picks they amassed in the trade that brought Robert Griffin III to Washington. Now all they have to do is convert and make sure their quarterback remains on the field.

Key acquisition Keeping Sam Bradford healthy is the Rams priority and lineman Greg Robinson, the No. 2 pick (from Washington), will be tasked with that duty.

Biggest loss Safety Darian Stewart departed for Baltimore.

AT&T Misses Earnings Estimates as Customers Shift to Phone Financing - July 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

AT&T Inc. (T), the second-largest U.S. wireless carrier, fell short of earnings estimates as more customers started paying for devices with installment plans, an option thats reducing profits as it cuts monthly service bills.

Second-quarter profit of 62 cents a share, excluding some items, missed the 63-cent average estimate of analysts, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Sales rose 1.6 percent to $32.6 billion, below the $33.2 billion average estimate. The company, which is buying satellite carrier DirecTV, already had raised its 2014 sales forecast and cut its range of earnings estimates on June 3 due to the effect of the installment plans, called Next. It reiterated the outlook yesterday.

The company added more than 1 million monthly wireless subscribers. The shift to Next helps keep customers from switching to T-Mobile US Inc., whose offer of smartphone financing early last year forced Dallas-based AT&T and the other carriers to catch up. The downside for AT&T and its rivals is that the trend cuts into their revenue from wireless services, since the companies have to account for smartphone installment payments separately.

Theyre seeing pressure on the margin side of things, but theyre hanging in there. Thats the best thing you can do in this type of environment, Angelo Zino, an analyst with S&P Capital IQ, said in an interview before the earnings release.

Shares of AT&T dropped 1.1 percent to $35.49 yesterday in late trading.

The average monthly wireless-phone bill fell to $62.28 from $67.49 a year earlier. Including Next installment payments for smartphones, the average bill was $64.35. Bills will increase substantially in the second half of the year as customers spend more on data for their new devices, AT&T said in a presentation posted online.

AT&T started promoting Next, along with its shared-data Family Value plan, to keep subscribers from fleeing to a smaller rival like T-Mobile for quicker device upgrades and lower service charges.

The best thing to do in this environment is keep the most valuable customers we have, said Ralph de la Vega, chief executive officer of AT&Ts mobile-services unit, in an interview. Our smartphone customers are crucial -- if you lose them, you lose growth opportunities in areas like connected cars and smart-home services.

The companys 1 million new monthly subscribers surpassed the 816,000 average of analysts estimates, though it fell short of Verizon Communications Inc.s gain of 1.4 million. AT&Ts additions included about 700,000 smartphone subscribers, compared with Verizons 304,000 new phone subscriptions. About half of the smartphones AT&T sold were through Next plans.

AT&Ts wireless-service profit margin expanded 0.2 percentage point from a year earlier to 42.6 percent. Analysts had projected a service margin of 42.4 percent, based on a Bloomberg survey of nine estimates.

California Bank of Commerce Reports Record Earnings for 2Q 2014 - July 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

On June 30, 2014, the Bank announced the successful completion of its $16 million public stock offering. Our Bank is growing and this new capital will help open up additional growth opportunities. We were very pleased and gratified that our existing and new shareholders were not only able to participate in our capital raise but supported it beyond our expectations, said Steve Cortese, Chairman of California Bank of Commerce.

Our strong results for the second quarter and first six months of 2014 reflects a continuing story of quality balance sheet growth and accelerating earnings, driven by an experienced team of banking professionals, said Terry A. Peterson President and CEO. With our successful capital raise behind us, we are also accelerating our search for additional experienced bankers to join our team and further fuel our growth, said Peterson.

Continued strong quarterly financial results versus 2013:

    Strong loan and deposit growth:

    Continued strong credit quality:

Improved book value and stronger capital ratio:

    Net Interest Income and Margin

For the quarter ended June 30, 2014 compared to the quarter ended June 30, 2013, net interest income increased by 17% to $3.6 million compared to $3.1 million last year. The year over year increase in net interest income was primarily driven by a combination of strong growth in average loan balances as well as an improved net interest margin.

The net interest margin for the second quarter 2014 was 4.17%, improving 29 basis points compared to the 3.88% average margin in the second quarter of 2013, while the margin was down six basis points from first quarter 2014. We were able to improve net interest margin year over year, however with our stronger loan to deposit ratio, continuing this improvement will be our challenge and opportunity, said Peterson.

What you need to know about the AFC North - July 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The top The AFC North is Johnny Manziels division; everyone else is just living in it.

Not bad for the No. 22 pick in the NFL draft and a guy who isnt promised to be the starter when the Cleveland Browns season begins. In Baltimore, theyre hoping for headlines about on-the-field matters; in Cincinnati, theyre replacing a couple of big-name coordinators; and in Pittsburgh, theyre doing things the Steeler way.

    Baltimore Ravens

Top storyline The beginning of training camp is the best story line, anyway, because that means no one is talking about how the Ravens led the league in offseason arrests. Even though few of those guys are locks to make the final roster, it was an embarrassing run and theres uncertainty concerning how Ray Rice will put the controversy behind him.

Key acquisition Gary Kubiak might just be the most important person on the scene. The former Houston Texans coach will be tasked with sparking the offense and helping QB Joe Flacco get his mojo back.

Biggest loss Defensive lineman Arthur Jones left for the Indianapolis Colts.

    Cincinnati Bengals

Top story line The Bengals are nothing if not steady: Marvin Lewis coaches em, they get into the playoffs, they lose. At least they arent on Hard Knocks this year.

Key acquisition Jeremy Hill, a second-round draft pick, is expected to share the burden in the offensive backfield with Giovani Bernard.

Biggest loss The coordinators: Jay Gruden headed to Washington to coach the Redskins, with Hue Jackson now tasked with helping Andy Dalton, and Mike Zimmer takes over in Minnesota.

Netflix Passes 50 Million Subscribers - July 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Netflix's "Orange Is the New Black"

Netflix on Monday reported that it added 1.69 million paying streaming subscribers in the second quarter, enough to put it past 50 million for the first time.

LIST The Hollywood Reporter Reveals Hollywood's 100 Favorite Films

Netflix had guided analysts to expect less than 1.5 million additions during the quarter, which would have kept it under the 50 million threshold. Instead, the company ended the quarter with 50.05 million streaming subscribers worldwide.

The company reported earning $1.15 per share on revenue of $1.34 billion, which were mixed results compared to Wall Street's expectations.

Analysts predicted the streaming-media company to post earnings per share of $1.16 on $1.33 billion in revenue.

Wall Street appeared mildly impressed with the financial results, as shares were trading 1 percent higher after the closing bell. During the regular session, Netflix shares were up 2 percent to $451.96.

At the end of the quarter, Netflix boasted 35.1 million paying subscribers to its domestic streaming service, up from 28.6 million a year ago. Domestic DVD subscribers fell to 6.2 million from 7.4 million last year.

Paid international streamers rose to 12.9 million from 7 million a year ago. Netflix does not offer an international DVD service.

Netflix Boosted by World Cup TV Sales in Latin America - July 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The World Cup is fueling Netflix Inc. (NFLX)s global ambitions.

The dominant online-subscription service posted second-quarter customer gains that beat its own forecast, reaching more than 50 million subscribers worldwide, according to a statement yesterday. Soccer fans in Latin America snapped up Web-linked TVs for the World Cup and then signed up to stream shows like the hit series Orange Is the New Black.

Markets such as Brazil, one of the first targeted for growth by Los Gatos, California-based Netflix, are turning profitable and setting the stage for the companys next expansion -- in Germany, France and four other European countries starting in September. Chief Executive Officer Reed Hastings has made clear hes willing to sacrifice profitability to extend his lead in online television.

We hope its similar to our success in the past, where there are significant upfront losses that abate over the coming years, Hastings said yesterday in a telephone interview. Our long-term guidance is to run the company at breakeven as were engaging in this international expansion.

This quarter, Netflix forecasts profit of 89 cents a share, short of the $1.02 a share projected by analysts.

The outlook reflects foreign expansion costs, Hastings said in a letter to investors. Netflix sees a $42 million loss outside the U.S., almost triple the $15 million loss in the period just ended. The new European markets have more than 60 million households with fast Internet service, Hastings said.
