Post Falls may float $19.5M school bond - November 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

POST FALLS - Voters in the Post Falls School District may get to choose in March which they would rather have: lower taxes, or a new elementary school.

At 6 p.m. Monday at River City Middle School, Superintendent Jerry Keane will present the school board with a proposal for a $19.5 million bond levy to construct a new elementary school and facility improvements.

The board is expected to decide at its Dec. 8 meeting whether to forward the proposal to voters on March 10.

    The proposal includes constructing:

    * A $10 million elementary school on the west side of Greensferry Road, north of Prairie View Elementary adjacent to the Fieldstone subdivision, to alleviate overcrowding at Prairie View and Ponderosa

    * A $4 million second-story addition at River City Middle School to alleviate overcrowding

    * A $2.5 million performing arts auditorium at Post Falls High

    * A $2 million auxiliary gym at Post Falls High

    * A $1 million sum for a two-classroom addition at West Ridge; heating unit upgrades at Seltice, Frederick Post/New Vision and Mullan Trail; energy efficiency remodels at Mullan Trail and Frederick Post; and security system upgrades throughout the district.

"If authorized by the board of trustees and ultimately approved by our patrons, the district will be able to fund all of the projects without raising taxes," Keane said. "We are in the process of refinancing existing bonds and the West Ridge bonds will be paid off."

A's executive Zaidi named Dodgers' general manager - November 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

"Farhan's primary focus will be the Major League team and player acquisitions, while Josh will concentrate on the oversight of scouting and player development. However, they will both work closely with me on all aspects of baseball operations in our efforts to make the Dodgers' front office and team the best it can possibly be."

The Dodgers also are rumored to be considering Billy Gasparino and Gabe Kapler for senior positions, but they were not included in Thursday's announcement.

MLB Network reports that the Dodgers are announcing the additions of Farhan Zaidi as GM and Josh Byrnes as senior VP of baseball operations

Friedman's hiring by CEO Stan Kasten was announced on Oct. 14. In the three weeks that followed, Friedman has added two cabinet members who blend youth and experience, while demonstrating a cutting-edge analytical intellect and a respectful appreciation for old-school baseball.

But unlike the Dodgers' previous foray into analytics with the hiring of Paul DePodesta before the 2004 season, this collection of new-breed execs includes Friedman, a GM for nine seasons, and Byrnes, twice a GM covering nearly a decade.

Zaidi comes from the same Oakland training ground as DePodesta. Gasparino has already been a scouting director, and Kapler, most recently a FOX TV analyst, played 11 seasons as a Major League outfielder.

While fans remain understandably fixated on a 26-year World Series drought, the new regime will be equally focused on delivering Kasten's promise to revitalize a player-development pipeline that fell into disrepair under previous ownerships and still struggles to promote difference makers to the Major Leagues.

In the big league dugout, Friedman has said manager Don Mattingly will return for 2015, but Mattingly's coaching staff remains in limbo.

Royals' run spurred by additions who came from Brewers - November 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Zack Greinke trade after the 2010 season was part of the foundation of the 2014 Royals' success. Make that a major part.

The Royals had a top-shelf haul in this deal. Credit general manager Dayton Moore with seeing the possibilities and seizing the moment.

Kansas City came up with an elite defensive shortstop, Alcides Escobar, who, in a more just world, would have already won an American League Gold Glove Award or two. Escobar's offensive game has developed to the point that he moved into the leadoff spot in the Royals' lineup and was good enough to make a real difference.

Center fielder Lorenzo Cain, a multifaceted talent, arrived from the Brewers in the same deal. He emerged in this postseason as a legitimate star. He hit .333 with a .388 on-base percentage in the 2014 postseason, scoring 13 runs in 15 games, and shining in the outfield.

The Royals also picked up Jake Odorizzi, at the time regarded as one of the best pitching prospects in the Brewers' Minor League system. Moore eventually packaged Odorizzi in the deal that brought starter James Shields and reliever Wade Davis from Tampa Bay. We all know how that worked. Shields became the leader of the rotation and Davis evolved into one of the best eighth-inning setup men in the game.

Another Brewers prospect in the trade, flamethrowing Jeremy Jeffress, did not pan out for Kansas City. He was, ironically or not, back on Milwaukee's roster and pitching well in relief during the second half of the 2014 season.

The Brewers were not shut out in this deal. They got the immediate payoff they wanted in 2011, winning a division title, setting a franchise record with 96 regular-season victories and advancing to the National League Championship Series.

The following season, they traded Greinke to the Angels. One of the players they received in return, shortstop Jean Segura, could be a long-term answer, even though he is not a defensive player of Escobar's stature.

When you look at the overall effects of this trade, the Royals could be benefiting from it for a long time. The importance of this deal for Kansas City cannot be overstated.

Further assistance came from Milwaukee prior to the 2014 season. The Royals needed a top-of-the-order hitter and stable right fielder. They got that player from the Brewers in Nori Aoki. Aoki's second-half resurgence was a huge plus in the Royals' push for the postseason.

Google joins enterprise cloud battle with additions to its cloud platform - November 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Google has announced enhancements to the networking stack, a partnership with Bitnami, support for the popular Ubuntu Linux distribution from Canonical and storage price drops at its Google Cloud Platform Live event in San Francisco.

Google hosted its second cloud event under the GCP Live brand to announce new features, services, partnerships and customer wins.

The announcements came just a few days before AWS re:Invent, where its closest rival Amazon is expected to make a splash.

Earlier in October, another cloud giant, Microsoft, revealed its enterprise cloud strategy and new features on its Azure platform.

Though Google has a superior technology stack to its two rivals, it lacks the sales and marketing muscle of Amazon and Microsoft. Microsoft has a decade-long engagement with fortune 500 companies, while Amazon is aggressively moving in to win the enterprise customers. Googles focus has always been on the developers.

Google App Engine, one of the first cloud platforms announced in 2008 attracted many developers and startups. But with solid investments in Google Compute Engine, the infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) component, and BigQuery, a scalable database engine optimised for big data and aggressive hiring, Google is getting ready for the enterprise battle.

Todays announcements underscore the enterprise focus of Google Cloud Platform.

Google Compute Engine (GCE) became generally available in December 2013. Since then, Google has been constantly adding features to bring it on par with the competition. When compared with Amazon EC2, GCE delivers better performance. Scalr, the popular multi-cloud management platform, has published a series of benchmark reports that prove the point.

Todays announcements widen the choice of operating system (OS) supported on GCE. With the availability of Ubuntu, Google customers can now launch the most popular Linux distribution on the cloud. Canonical, the company that ships Ubuntu, claims that 85% of Linux workloads run on its distribution.

Though GCE supported Debian Linux, which is compatible with Ubuntu, getting the official distribution makes more sense. This makes GCE one of the complete IaaS offerings, with support for CentOS, CoreOS, Debian, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Suse, Ubuntu and Microsoft Windows Server.

Dave D'Onofrio's Patriots Notebook Defense has become name of the game - November 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Looking only at the league rankings through all but the Monday night game of Week 9, one would reach the conclusion that the Patriots team sitting atop the AFC has assumed its position in the conference penthouse by re-creating the recipe thats helped them to top-two seeds, and first-round byes, in each of the last four postseasons.

Pending the results of the Giants-Colts game, the Patriots ranked second in the NFL in terms of points per game; since 2010, theyve on average ranked second in scoring at the end of the year. On the other side of scrimmage, the Pats were 12th-best league-wide in terms of points allowed per game; on average, theyve finished the past four seasons at No. 10.5.

But when looking at how the Pats have steamed into their bye week on a run of five straight wins, what those macro numbers dont reflect is that for as good as New Englands offense has been of late, the most impressive aspect of New Englands 7-2 start has been the growth of the defense, both individually and collectively, in comparison to where they were at various stages dating back to the end of last season.

Offense is sexier, so it gets the attention. And deservedly so. Tom Brady has played MVP-caliber football for the past month, Rob Gronkowski has been beastly, and New England is accordingly averaging a tick better than 40 points a game. That type of production leads to blowout wins. Blowouts open eyes and build perceptions.

However, in Sundays league-tilting trouncing of the Broncos, the most encouraging facet for the Patriots wasnt that the offense scored 36 points (with seven more coming from special teams). It was that their defense held Peyton Manning and his mates to just 21.

And, more specifically, it was the way they held Denvers fearsome attack to just three scores.

Thats an important distinction because in terms of the bottom line, 21 points is only five fewer than the Patriots allowed the Broncos in what felt like a lopsided loss in last years AFC championship game. That doesnt make it seem like all that much of an improvement until we dig a bit deeper.

In that title game, New England simply couldnt get off the field. Denvers shortest drive of the day was seven plays and 37 yards, which was on an opening series that would be its only punt of the afternoon. The Broncos scored on their next six possessions, converting eight of 14 attempts on either third or fourth down. Thats a 57 percent success rate, and enabled them to hold the ball for 35 minutes and 44 seconds.

Sunday was another story. Denver went three-and-out on each of its first two offensive series and (discounting a kneel-down to end the first half) it got to the seventh play in only five of 14 drives. The Broncos never scored on successive possessions, and thats in no small part because they were 3-for-11 on third down (27 percent) and 0-for-4 on fourth down. Three-for-15 combined equates to a 20 percent success rate, and so although the Broncos had seven more possessions on Sunday than they did in the AFC title tilt, they held the ball for five fewer minutes (30:33).

Its a hard team to stop and they have a great offensive team, great quarterback, theyre well coached, said Patriots coach Bill Belichick. You have to give our players a lot of credit for the way they competed out there tonight; just hung in there series after series after series and went toe to toe with that group.

Rays exercise 2015 club option on Peralta - November 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

6/22/14: Joel Peralta earns his first save of the season, getting Dexter Fowler to fly out to deep right for the final out

Since joining Tampa Bay in 2011, Peralta leads all Major League pitchers with 296 appearances and ranks second in the Majors with 115 holds, behind Tyler Clippard (124) of the Nationals. Peralta owns the franchise career records in both categories.

"Joel has accomplished a lot in a Rays uniform, and we are excited to welcome him back for a fifth season," said vice president of baseball operations Erik Neander. "He's a fiery competitor, a model teammate and a leader in the clubhouse."

Peralta, 38, ranked second on the Rays' staff with 69 appearances in 2014, despite the first DL stint (July 13-27, illness) of his 10-year Major League career. He finished the campaign at 3-4 with a 4.41 ERA and one save.

Peralta allowed only two of his 24 inherited runners to score, and he limited opponents to 0-for-25 with two outs and runners in scoring position.

Having Peralta back in 2015 will add a veteran presence to what could be a young bullpen. Other than Grant Balfour, who will turn 37 in December, Tampa Bay's bullpen will be composed primarily of players under the age of 30, led by Jake McGee and Brad Boxberger.

In addition to performing well for the Rays, Peralta has served as a leader on the team, particularly among the Latin American players.

Bill Chastain is a reporter for MLB.com. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.

Beaver Creek Will Have Plenty Of Seating For World Alpine Championships - November 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

BEAVER CREEK, Colo. (CBS4) Its been 15 years since the World Alpine Ski Championships was in the U.S., and that was in Colorado. Back then the venue only held 2,500 people. This time Beaver Creek is building a huge seating area for fans.

Beaver Creek will be only the second place in the world that has hosted the event three times, but with just more than three months to go, theres still a lot of work to be done.

I am amazed every time I come up here and see the new additions and just how massive everything is, John Dakin with the Vail Valley Foundation said.

Construction only started two months ago but already significant structures are nearing completion.

We started building the stadium here on Sept. 1, and then everything else has just sort of followed into place the international broadcast center, the VIP structures the scoreboard, Dakin said.

Because of the size, the structures are being built now and wont be take down until after the ski season next summer.

Structures of this size and scope, you want to build them on a hard surface, you want to build them on dirt as opposed to snow, Dakin said.

More than 3,000 people will be able to sit in the massive grandstand, and on the ground there will be standing room for another 5,000. Most years when the Birds of Prey event is held in Beaver Creek, the stadium only holds 1,000.

It is by far the largest structure that has ever occupied this space for a ski race,Dakin said.

A three-story international broadcast center will be up and running in December. It will house 14 TV studios, putting Vail and Beaver Creek into millions of households worldwide.

Bharti Profit Beats Estimates on Increased Data Usage - October 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Bharti Airtel Ltd. (BHARTI), Indias largest mobile-phone services provider, reported profit that beat analyst estimates as customers spent more time browsing the Internet, exchanging e-mail and downloading songs and photos.

Net income more than doubled to 13.8 billion rupees ($225 million) in the fiscal second quarter, the New Delhi-based company said in a statement today. Profit surpassed the 13 billion-rupee median of 24 analysts estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

Billionaire Chairman Sunil Mittals company joins smaller competitor Idea Cellular Ltd. in posting profit that exceeded estimates as a proliferation of low-cost smartphones spurs a surge in mobile Internet access. Bharti introduced a music streaming application last month in a bid to boost data usage.

Low-cost smartphones such as Google One devices costing under $100 should help boost data penetration, Praveen Menon, a New York-based analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, said in an e-mail before the earnings announcement. This would benefit Indian telcos such as Bharti, especially in rural areas.

Mobile data sales, including at its Africa operations, rose 67 percent to 25.4 billion rupees, contributing more than two-thirds of the incremental revenue, Bharti said. Mobile data revenue in India climbed 74 percent, boosted by a 43 percent increase in the number of users and a 31 percent jump in usage per customer, it said.

We continue to see strong momentum in mobile data, Gopal Vittal, chief executive officer for India and South Asia, said in the statement. The companys introduction of fourth-generation services in 15 cities is now witnessing stronger customer acceptance, he said.

The average price of smartphones sold in India has declined by more than $100 in the past three years to $142, according to Bloomberg Intelligence.

Idea, the third-largest Indian wireless carrier, on Oct. 20 reported better-than-estimated profit of 7.56 billion rupees after data volume more than doubled.

Sales at Bharti increased 7 percent to 228.5 billion rupees in the three months ended September, missing the the 232 billion-rupee median of 24 analysts estimates.

Bharti rose 0.6 percent to 407.50 rupees at the close in Mumbai trading, before the earnings announcement. The stock has gained 23 percent this year, compared with a 29 percent increase in the benchmark S&P BSE India Sensex Index.

FOX 5 Investigates: Online Dangers - October 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    WASHINGTON -

With Halloween nearing, there are a few things scarier than someone stalking you online. But that is exactly what could happen if you download certain apps or scroll through some social media sites without paying attention to the permissions page.

It can be easy for someone with evil intentions to find you. And those intentions can be deadly. What you are about to see is a story of a short movie with a very important message.

We showed it to people and watched them react -- with many still frightened.

At first glance, you might think this is a horror movie. And you know what? You're right. But the only thing is that you are the star.

The interactive five-minute film called "Take This Lollipop" was created by Hollywood director Jason Zada.

It shows a very intense version of Facebook stalking.

It's so real, said one girl we showed this to. That's my face and those are all my pictures and those are things that I think are private when I log onto my personal Facebook.

The app takes your pictures, it takes your location, and your friends list, and then shows how someone could take your life in a matter of minutes.

Those are my pictures, said Tom Guarino. It's weird. I don't know what's going on.
