Museum renovations are under way - May 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Extensive interior renovations are under way at the Jackson County Central Historical Society Museum in Lakefield.

Work began the last week of March.

Funding for the updating and remodeling of the museum came from savings the museum experienced thanks to a donation from an area farmer that left funds to pay for a new roof for museum as well as the updating of the museum HVAC system.

Each year, the (county) commissioners give us funds as a line item on their annual budget, said society director Mike Kirchmeier. That is $60,000 a year for everything all of the expenses to operate the museum. The funds we have beyond that are raised here.

While project contractor Horkey Construction of Heron Lake works on the front portion of the museum building, Sohn Electric of Jackson is working on the backroom, Kirchmeier said, putting in 20 new, energy-efficient fixtures and bulbs. Sohn Electric added transformers and motion detectors to the lights as well.

The backroom lights work on a motion-detecting system where any motion causes the lights to come on when a person enters the room, Kirchmeier said. They stay on for 30 minutes and stay on as long as there is some motion in the room. Then they shut down after that timeframe if no motion is detected.

In order for the work to be done on the front room of the museum, a lot of items had to be moved, Kirchmeier noted. Displays like the depot had to be moved, as well as the front office. But there were many additional individual items, showcases and displays that had to be moved about too.

The depot was moved near the Heron Lake display in the third room and the office was tore out so the contractors could work there, Kirchmeier said. Moving the depot and removing the office opened up the front room space, but it also left open spaces on the interior walls that needed to be sheetrocked and insulated.

Volunteer Todd Post has been doing the insulating and sheetrock work on those areas of the museum.

Mike Horkey is working on the new drop ceiling framework for the new ceiling in the front room, Kirchmeier said. Remodeling the front room, adding the drop ceiling with its white tiles and replacing the old light fixtures there with larger light fixtures will make the front room brighter and more inviting.

Thibodaux man turns spare room into arcade - April 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Published: Monday, April 28, 2014 at 8:32 a.m. Last Modified: Monday, April 28, 2014 at 8:32 a.m.

Twenty-three-year-old Coby Cancienne took an add-on to his parents' house and turned it into a combination arcade and man cave. A man arcave, perhaps.

Every single day I come back here and sit down in my computer chair, and I look around. ... You really can't get bored back here, he said.

Upon entrance to Cancienne's arcade cave, only the games are impressive. Set against a typical garage setting is a sit down shooter, the newest acquisition, which is lined up alongside other popular titles, including Golden Tee, Cruisin' the World and Joust. Several other games don't yet operate, though Cancienne said he plans to refurbish each machine in the future.

The beeps, boops, whizzes and digital music associated with any two-bit arcade experience increase the deeper you traverse into rooms that become a mesh of arcade extravagance and Cancienne's artistic vision.

The back room is crammed full of popular titles, including Ms. Pac-Man, Mortal Kombat 4 and Super Mario. The room has a unique arcade feel with light coming only from the games, glow-in-the-dark stars and additional lighting Cancienne added.

Though the three rooms themselves are small even for a former salon/snow ball shop the space seems to expand with every flashing arcade Cancienne has managed to fit in his limited space.

The connecting room is the smallest of the three and contains only two arcade games, including Castlevania.

In the middle of the room sits a wooden chair that looks like it was meant for royalty. From his throne, Cancienne will peruse the Internet in search of other games to add to his collection. The first on his list Galaga.

Like a real legit Galaga. I want one of those so bad, he said.

Victorian Village home on remodeling tour features master retreat once imagined as playroom - April 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Attic for adults Home and Garden More Home & Garden On The House By Jim Weiker The Columbus Dispatch Sunday April 27, 2014 8:42 AM

When Jenny Klaus and Mike Falkenhain sought extra living space in their Victorian Village home several years ago, they knew they could find it in the huge unfinished attic.

But the couple wasnt sure how to use the space. With one of their children then in preschool, they considered finishing the space as a playroom. As the children grew, however, the couples needs changed.

By the time they decided to move forward on the project last year, they needed a master suite more than a playroom.

Working with Ketron Custom Builders of Granville, the couple turned 1,400 square feet of unfinished attic space into an adult retreat a master bedroom and bathroom, an exercise room, a walk-in closet and a sitting area.

The results will be open to visitors next weekend during the annual Home Improvement Showcase sponsored by the central Ohio chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry.

The Victorian Village home is one of 16 stops on the tour, which showcases home renovations from the basement to the attic.

Klaus and Falkenhain, who are both doctors, have enjoyed their attic master suite for six months.

Theres nothing I dont like about it, Klaus said.

The room seemingly a natural extension of the house is lighted by windows on three sides, including a massive half-circle below the 17-foot-high roof pitch that spreads moonlight through the room.

Library Plan Pits de Blasio Pledge Against Mayoral Role - April 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

While running for mayor last year, Bill de Blasio joined demonstrators on the steps of the New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue to denounce a $300 million renovation of the marble edifice as a dramatic alteration of a crown jewel.

Now in City Hall with the power to stop the project, as he implored his predecessor to do, de Blasio hasnt made a decision on the plan, said Marti Adams, his spokeswoman. The mayor kept $151 million in his preliminary budget for the remodeling, with his final spending plan due next month.

The proposal seeks to draw more people to the iconic main branch while saving more than $7 million a year by shutting down two nearby library buildings. It would consolidate their operations inside an 80,000-square-foot atrium created by ripping out a seven-level book stack, hailed as an engineering marvel in a 1911 cover story by Scientific American magazine.

Opponents trying to preserve the stacks say the Beaux Arts temple of culture will no longer be the worlds pre-eminent free research institution when about 40 percent of its 9.9 million hard-to-find volumes must be retrieved from repositories more than 50 miles away. Neighborhood activists say the money earmarked for the renovation would be better spent on the systems 88 overused and underfunded local branches.

Were trying to improve a masterpiece, and none of the people involved are Michelangelos and da Vincis, said David Levering-Lewis, a historian who researched his Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of early civil rights champion W.E.B. Dubois at the library. He was paraphrasing architecture critic Ada Louise Huxtable, also a Pulitzer Prize winner, who denounced the plan in the Wall Street Journal in December 2012, a month before she died.

Anthony Marx, 55, president of the library since 2011, says hes listening to the opposition and taking into account de Blasios questions about the librarys future. He holds a vision, he says, of a more democratic institution welcoming more people than the current 2.4 million who use it now. About 30 percent of the current space is open to the public, he said.
