Remodeling Your Powder Room – HGTV -

Ah, the powder room. That whimsical, showoff of a bathroom. Unless of course, its fixtures are frumpy, its style lost in the last century. Here's how to remodel your powder room so you're never afraid to say, "Yes!" when someone asks, "Do you have a restroom I can use?"
A powder room, because of its small size, is a great place to take chances with design. You might try an intense color or unusual materials, ones that might overpower a larger room. "You can go really crazy," says Sara Ann Busby, president-elect of the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) and owner of Sara Busby Designs, Elk Rapids, Mich.
Before contacting a bath design professional, give some thought to what style of powder room you prefer. Unsure of your personal style? Yes/No Design: Discover Your Decorating Style With Taste-Revealing Exercises and Examples by Diane Love (Rizzoli International Publications) can help you get a handle on it.
Once you've pinpointed your style, check out some beautiful bathrooms in person. Decorator show houses, kitchen and bath showrooms, and plumbing showrooms provide places to see styles in 3-D, says Jessica Clock, a designer with Carmel Kitchen Specialists Inc. of Carmel, Ind.
When auditioning colors for your powder room, beige, tan and sand need not apply. Bold hues like merlot, navy, chocolate and even black work well in this small space. Although conventional decorating wisdom suggests that lighter colors make a small room feel bigger, there's no need for visual tricks here. Embrace the room's small size and go for drama instead. "I love the idea of creating a jewel box. A bathroom doesn't have to be big to be effective," says Randall Whitehead, lighting designer and owner of Randall Whitehead Lighting Designs.
Despite the room's small size, many mechanicals must be included. "You've got big drain lines to get in and obviously the water supply lines," Sara Ann says. "You've got to get ventilation in there and possibly a window and some very specific products that aren't really flexible in size," like a toilet and sink. A professional designer can look at the overall size of the room, take the mechanicals into account, and create a floor plan that maximizes space.
Powder rooms are the perfect place to dabble in materials that are more costly, delicate or require more maintenance because the room needs considerably less material than other bathrooms and receives less traffic. Sara Ann Busby also suggests using materials in unusual ways. For example, she likes to add a twist to stone countertops by creating a jagged edge. The effect is unexpected and gives a natural feel to the bathroom.
To make a powder room hospitable, accessorize. Add art to walls, arrange small vignettes on the countertops, and provide little luxuries like finely milled soaps and rich lotion for guests to use. The one thing a powder room doesn't need much of is storage. Anything a visitor needs from hand towels to extra toilet tissue should be in plain sight. So put the lights on a dimmer, light a wonderful candle, and the next time someone asks to use the bathroom tell them yes, without hesitation.

When my mother passed away and left me the property she owned, my husband and I decided to take on the challenge of rebuilding. The property needed a lot of work, and there was no alternative but to start from scratch. I was excited and scared at the same time, for I have heard such horror stories from other people about contractors. We met with many companies and the one that stood out the most was Orange County Construction. Keith showed professionalism from the start.

Mediterranean interiorsFrench country home is a potpourri of bountiful bouquets, treasured books, photographs, scented candles and tabletop antiques. Scrolled iron work, carved armoires, towering hutches and buffets. Powdery blues with yellow and white - the bedroom can be simple or elegant, blissfully romantic and thoroughly feminine. With ribbon bows and lace panels billowing to the floor, European pillows, pure white, embroidered bed sheets, and definitely a bolster and lace edged duvet to enrich the feeling of a retreat and a touch of toile should be seen on the bed with a flowing bed canopy. Window Shutters create a continental air as well as providing a stylish window accent. The louvered variety allows plenty of light through and can be folded back individually, offering flexibility as curtains. Wooden shutters can be painted in any color to match the bedroom color scheme.TuscanTuscany, the region of central west Italy. Many of the colors associated with this area are named after the places whose soil and ores were the sources of color. Raw sienna is a reddish pigment that comes from the iron and manganese rich earth around the town of Siena. When roasted in a furnace, the pigment becomes richer, darker and more brilliant and then known as burnt sienna. The clay, sand and minerals of the region also provide umber, a greenish-brown color, yellow ochre, a muddy mustard yellow and the warm orange-hued terracotta. Walls and surfaces in this part of Italy are painted with these pigment finishes or with the paint equivalent, and tend to be matt with graduated, uneven washes of color that give a time-worn, sun-baked appearance. Fabrics are often dyed with printed in greens, blues and lavenders - inspired by the vines, olives and fields of lavender that grow in the region. Greek StyleVariations on the classic blue and dazzling white palette, relaxed, simple, harmonious, rustic with durable decor. Hallmarks of this refreshingly unpretentious style - pastel textured walls, pebbled floors, fretwork window screens, studded doors, mosaic tabletops and accented with an eclectic mix and exotic touch (a filigreed lantern, Moroccan dishware, a kilim rug, Moorish arches, Spanish-style wrought ironwork, bold simplicity with textural contrasts, will bring the Mediterranean into your home.

MULBERRY --
The city of Mulberry can finally turn the page on a water-soaked room inside its city's civic center.
After months of cleaning out mold and water in the civic center, the city has remodeled the lower level of the building and turned it into the new home for the Mulberry Public Library.
It's a transformation for the books.
"Over the years, they had water seeping in, and we ended up with the mold issue," said Sherry Schiler, the library's director.
Now, it's a place Schiler said she can be proud of.
"We got a grant (and) had it totally remodeled," she said. "Everything in the older building was taken out. All of asbestos tiles everything was taken down to the bare walls and then they had mold-removing machines in here."
The new 4,300-square-foot library is the perfect place for people like Kim Duke and her daughter, Kenzie, who is maximizing the new space.
"I love to read and, at school, we have prizes for getting a certain amount of points," Kenzie Duke said. "So, I come to check out books."
Vicki Pritt is doing the same. She said the old library was too small. The new one, however, is the perfect fit for the city.

Jimmy John's to double in size
BY GRACE PATERAS | MARCH 27, 2015 5:00 AM
Customers hoping to sit and enjoy their lunch or dinner at Jimmy Johns will soon have more space to do so.
Jimmy Johns, 130 E. Washington St., is in the process of expanding the restaurant and remodeling. The new shop, doubled in size, will take the space where Domby, a boutique shop, used to be.
Having bigger space allows more people to come in and enjoy their lunch here, said Dale Anderson, the Jimmy Johns general manager. It will free up a lot of congestion here, because right now its just one long room.
Anderson said customers sometimes feel crowded in the shop when the restaurant is busy.
Especially at night, when you get a huge crowd of people here, people are walking to get their sandwiches, he said. People are also with their sandwiches trying to leave. This should free up a lot of that congestion.
University of Iowa sophomore Domini Genovese said she goes to eat at Jimmy Johns a few times a week but usually takes her meal to go. She said her and her friends have discussed how small the seating area currently is, and they would be more likely to eat there if there were more seats.
Its really tight, and its really inconvenient, Genovese said. Theres not a lot, so its very limited to eat there.
Another Jimmy Johns customer agreed. UI freshman Anna Sweeney said she goes to the restaurant once a week, whether she eats it there or takes it to go.
