Styles&Wood completes 770,000 primary school refurbishment - April 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The 20-week project required the full strip out and remodelling of the special day school and included the addition of a 'calm room', a design technology suite, a science room and a teaching kitchen.

Property services firm Styles&Wood has completed a 770,000 design and build project at Avon Park Primary School in Warwickshire.

The 20-week project required the full strip out and remodelling of the special day school and included the addition of a 'calm room', a design technology suite, a science room and a teaching kitchen.

The nursery occupying the building adjacent remained fully operational at all times.

Styles&Woods specialist education service team was appointed to handle the refurbishment following a competitive tender process.

The team worked alongside the client, The Witherslack Group, to plan an appropriate schedule of works under a tight deadline, with minimal disruption to the nursery and the surrounding environment.

This included engaging with the local community and providing fortnightly updates on progress and regular air testing at weekends during the removal of asbestos to provide extra reassurance for staff and parents.

Paul Lonsdale, operations director at Styles&Wood, said: The team went above and beyond basic requirements and considered the site appearance, respect for the local community and the environment throughout the project.

By working in collaboration with Witherslack Group we were able to deliver the full redevelopment within budget and on time.

Sun Valley says goodbye to LDR

Memories shared at goodbye dinner, brunch

By ERIC AVISSAR Express Staff Writer

Sun Valley Resort staff and guests said goodbye over the weekend to one of the resorts iconic establishments, the Lodge Dining Room in the Sun Valley Lodge. After being the resorts premier dining destination for decades, the Lodge Dining Room hosted a final dinner on Saturday, followed by a final brunch on Sunday. At the private invite-only dinner, 166 guests shared one last meal filled with memories and stories. In March, the Holding familywhich owns the resortannounced that the Lodge Dining Room would be repurposed to make room for a spa. The spa remodel and addition is part of a broader project to remodel the entire lodge. Former resort executive Claude Guigonwho ran the dining room from 1980 to 1998was in attendance Saturday, along with four of his former waiters who came back to serve many familiar guests for one last night. Being back here brought an overwhelming sense of nostalgia and so many happy memories, Guigon said. This has always felt like home to me, and its been so fantastic to be back in Sun Valley. After buying Sun Valley Resort in 1977, businessman Earl Holding made it a priority to turn the Lodge Dining Roomwhich had been converted into a convention roomback into a five-star formal dining room. As matre d for opening night of the dining room on Dec. 19, 1980, Erich Steinbach said the Holding family sought to model the expansive room after the formal dining room at the Westgate Hotel in San Diego, Calif. The dining room really hasnt changed much over the years, Steinbach said. The Holdings kept the integrity of the place throughout the years. Its a beautiful room, and it still was during the last meal. Steinbach later went on to serve the Holding family as the Westgate Hotels food and beverage director, and then got promoted to general manager. He said that his experience working at the Lodge Dining Room was a great steppingstone for his career. My experiences at the Lodge Dining Room really helped me during my formative years, Steinbach said. Whenever I had a difficult decision of my own, I always asked how Earl (Holding) would do it, and it was usually the right way to go. Valley resident Brian Poster was one of four former waiters in the Lodge Dining Room in the 1980s who returned to work one more night on Saturday. He shared Steinbachs sentiments of looking back on his time at the dining room as an integral element to his own business success. I learned a lot of important life lessons working in the Lodge Dining Room, Poster said. I own a very successful construction business now, and its all about service. I owe a lot of my success to the time I spent working for Claude in the Lodge Dining Room. In addition to Poster, Jeff French, Grady Burnett and Rick Hoffman are former waiters who worked under Guigon and returned to wait tables one last time on Saturday night. After dinner, all of them enjoyed a beer with Guigon in the lodge lobby, where they reminisced and shared what Poster called a very special moment together. Claude was definitely the heartbeat of the Lodge Dining Room, Poster said. While Guigon said he is disappointed that the tuxedo and white-glove formal dining that the Lodge Dining Room was known for has lost popularity, he understands that many people desire a more casual dining experience. The legacy of the Lodge Dining Room will stay forever, but times have changed, Guigon said. Im a little sad to see this room go, but on the other hand Im happy because this is the right thing to do. Sun Valley is headed in the right direction, and the Holdings are going to make this renovation spectacular. Guigon said he has many memories of serving celebrities and household names. One of the keys to the dining rooms success over the years was how the staff treated everyone with the same level of service, he said. To me, anybody who came to the Lodge Dining Room was famous, Guigon said. I wanted to treat everyone exactly the same, and thats why we did so well. We just knew how to take care of anyone. With the dining room having been built in 1936, Guigon quipped during his toast to the guests on Saturday evening that a lot of us here tonight wish to look as good at 78 years old.

There is a thing called addition by subtraction.

That is what the Philadelphia Eagles did Friday. By flat out releasing DeSean Jackson, they added a greater probability that they will have a harmonious, drama-free locker room this season. They added the assurance that Jackson will not create a distraction. That he will not pout or sulk or hold out over a contract that was set to pay him $10.5 million in 2014 and make him the fifth-highest-paid receiver in the National Football League but apparently wasn't good enough for him.

Addition by subtraction -- that's how little Chip Kelly thought of 27-year-old Jackson.

And I don't necessarily blame him.

Jackson is a talented football player. He is wickedly fast. He is impossible to defend on the outside in single coverage. Throw him the ball, and he will go get it. Jackson has proved to be a threat to score whenever and however he touches the football. When he wants to.

That's the rub. When Jackson is good, he is game-changing good. When he is bad, he is chemistry-killing bad. You don't get one without the other.

Even though this is Kelly's second season as the Eagles' head coach, it is his first real opportunity to retool the Philadelphia roster he inherited from Andy Reid. Kelly has a season under his belt. He had an opportunity to evaluate firsthand every player on the roster. He became intimately aware of every player's strengths and weaknesses, his work habits, his dedication, his attitude, his practice tendencies, his commitment to good nutrition and sleep habits.

Kelly now can make informed decisions on how a player fits, or doesn't fit, into his program, into his system and into his plans.

That is why the Eagles gave Riley Cooper a five-year, $25 million contract before Cooper hit free agency last month. Kelly liked Cooper's production. He liked his physicality. He liked that Cooper valued blocking. And he liked the accountability Cooper showed after he was caught on video using a racial slur at a Kenny Chesney concert last summer.

    Cooper fit. Jackson did not.

Hotel Invest International Launches Room Investment Concept in Koh Phangan, Thailand - April 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Hong Kong (PRWEB) April 01, 2014

Hotel Invest International (HII) have launched a new hotel/resort in Koh Phangan Thailand. Now the company is hoping to attract more people looking for a rather unusual investment in their planned hotels and resorts throughout Asia.

    http://www.ihotelinvest.com

Hotel Invest International offers investors a 50% share of the income (net profit after costs) from investors room, let out to hotel guests throughout the year, and lets owners use it for up to 30 complimentary nights per year. The company manages the hotel and room on investor's behalf.

Hotel Invest International claims to provide a safe alternative investment, which they say offers investors a much higher return than the banks, but is much less risky than the stock markets. Investors can now easily own a share in a number of luxury hotels and resorts, without running all the risks associated with trying to become a multimillion dollar developer.

The company says its investors receive a 14.3% average income (per room) after charges, equating to USD$14,157 per year, which is considerably higher than the return on a traditional buy-to-let property in the region.

    http://www.ihotelinvest.com

In addition, investors get 30 nights complimentary stay at the hotel, at say $100 per night, so this adds up to an extra $3,000 per year benefit. Investors would therefore be looking at receiving USD$17,157 in total benefits per year on a USD$99,000 (GBP59,950) outlay.

The income on a room depends on how successful the hotel is and while demand for rooms in Thailand is high, that's no guarantee of future prospects. However, the company bases its 14.3% income on an 80% occupancy, so there is also an equal chance of a higher yield.

As volatile as the stock market can be, many investors have been looking into safer ways to invest their money so, "alternative investments" have become increasingly popular over the past 3-4 years.

Board Will Seek Bids for Classroom Addition at Washington West Elementary - March 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Washington School District will seek bids for a two-story, 11-classroom addition, at Washington West Elementary.

The school board Wednesday night approved moving forward with design and bid specifications for the project. An alternate bid also will be sought for a 13-classroom addition.

The project would be financed with funds left over from a $9 million, no tax-rate increase, approved by voters in April 2013.

If bids are favorable and the board awards a contract, the plan is to close Fifth Street Elementary and relocate most, if not all, of those students to Washington West. Elementary boundary line changes also are under review as part of this project.

Superintendent Dr. Lori VanLeer said Washington West is overcrowded now and the addition will not only ease space constraints for existing students, but allow for the addition of Fifth Street students.

Theres been a lot of analysis done on this, VanLeer told the board, which also discussed the project last month.

VanLeer said Fifth Street Elementary is landlocked and repairs, especially HVAC improvements, would cost more than building an addition to Washington West. She also said there is a potential buyer for the Fifth Street building and property, bringing in additional revenue to the district.

School officials have talked for some time about closing both Fifth Street and South Point Elementary as part of their long-range plans due to costly repairs needed. South Point also is located in a floodplain.

VanLeer said there are no plans to close South Point at this time because voters rejected a $40 million bond issue, with a 25-cent tax rate increase, which would have allowed for a new middle school to be built and that facility to convert to an elementary school.

So now were trying to make due with what we have, VanLeer said. We have the money left over from the $9 million bond issue and that will at least allow us to move forward with closing Fifth Street and adding on to West.

Stunning New University Hospital 'Sky Tower' Opens - March 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Posted Sunday, March 30th 2014 @ 8am byJim Forsyth

The largest construction project in Bexar County history has come to an end, as University Health System unveiled the new 'Sky Tower,' the 420 room addition to University Hospital in the Medical Center, 1200 WOAI news reports.

"This is designed to accommodate today's technology, as well as technologies which will be developed in the future," said Leni Kirkman, University's Communications Manager.

The massive addition includes 35 operating rooms, a massive state of the art emergency department, and one percent of the total budget goes toward 1200 works of art which are part of the 'healing arts program' embraced by the Health System.

And Kirkman says University is shedding its image as the 'public hospital.' She says only 23% of University's operating budget comes from taxpayers, the rest comes from insured, paying customers.

"This facility really is the final piece to that puzzle when it comes to having the level of care that we all want if it's a serious illness or injury," she said.

Stillwater staff say planned Water Street Inn addition too close to street - March 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A three-story addition to the Water Street Inn is being proposed by the building's owner. (Image courtesy of the Water Street Inn)

Plans for a major expansion of the Water Street Inn will go before the Stillwater City Council Tuesday.

The Stillwater Planning Commission signed off on the plans March 10, but city staff have raised concerns about the location of the three-story addition.

"It's too close to Myrtle Street, we think," said Bill Turnblad, the city's community development director. "We want them to move it back 8 feet farther than their plans specified."

The project requires a variance to the front-yard setback and a special-use permit for the rooftop patio, Turnblad said.

Owner Chuck Dougherty said Thursday that he has no plans to move the structure back.

"The planning commission approved our plans," he said. "At this time, we are not making any adjustments to them."

The addition would include a rooftop patio and a new primary entrance and lobby. It also would have a tower element, a nod to the clock tower that graced the Union Depot train station that formerly stood on the site.

The 21,000-square-foot addition, designed by ARCHNET in Stillwater, would add about 20 rooms to the 41-room hotel. The hotel lobby in the southwest corner would be moved to the building's north side, and the existing lobby would become the main dining area.
