SAN DIEGO -- The roster shuffle continued Sunday for the Padres, who were able to clear room on the 40-man roster when they designated pitchers Billy Buckner and Blaine Boyer for assignment.
San Diego manager Bud Black said he's hopeful both will stay in the organization and end up at Triple-A El Paso.
The Padres needed to make room for the addition of first baseman/outfielder Tommy Medica and reliever Troy Patton, who was obtained Saturday from the Orioles.
Buckner's stay in San Diego was short -- like one-day short -- as he was added to the roster Saturday and started against the Cubs, allowing three runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings in a loss.
Boyer tossed two scoreless innings of relief Thursday against the Cubs. It was his first Major League appearance since 2011 when he was with the Mets.
With Thursday's off-day, the Padres won't need a fifth starter until they return home to face the Pirates on June 2. That means Ian Kennedy, who started Sunday against the Cubs, will likely start Friday when the Padres face the White Sox in Chicago.
Medica, who began the season with the Padres, hit .161 in 31 at-bats with the team before he was sent to El Paso last month. Since then, he's hit .213 with three home runs and 18 RBIs in 89 at-bats there.
SAN DIEGO -- It wasn't a complete surprise Saturday when Orioles manager Buck Showalter pulled Troy Patton into his office in Baltimore and informed the reliever he was being traded to the Padres.
"I had heard the whispers before so I was somewhat prepared for the possibility of getting traded," he said. "It wasn't a complete shock, but whenever it does actually happen, it's obviously such a drastic change, so it's a little bit to get used to."

Steamboat Springs Several feet above where coal was once shoveled into an old boiler room in the Steamboat Springs School District administrative building now sits a room that has the potential to reshape broadband access in the city of Steamboat Springs and Routt County.
Members of the Northwest Colorado Broadband co-op and other public and private organizations gathered Tuesday afternoon to dedicate the room, known as a carrier-neutral location, that is the product of two-and-a-half years of hard work.
Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association CEO Tom Kern described the uphill battle the interested organizations faced in making the location a reality and how daunting the task looked at the start.
Man, were toast, Kern said to himself after a particularly disheartening meeting with various providers and users. But, we just kept at it.
The carrier-neutral location initially is enabling the school district, the city of Steamboat Springs and Routt County to pay far less for more connectivity, but the hope is that the effects will trickle down to customers large and small across the region.
A carrier-neutral location is a space owned by a disinterested third party where broadband providers can install equipment to connect to one another. In the case of the new CNL in the school districts building, the space will allow Northwest Colorado Broadband to connect to the newest middle-mile broadband provider in town: Mammoth Networks.
The middle mile is a segment of network infrastructure between the backbone of the Internet and last-mile providers, which serve individual customers.
Until now, the only true middle-mile provider in Steamboat Springs has been CenturyLink, which owned the fiber optic lines out of town.
Mammoth Networks expanded presence in Steamboat will allow it to compete with CenturyLink to provided middle-mile services to local Internet service providers as well as provide drastically less expensive connectivity to the large, institutional customers grouped under Northwest Colorado Broadband.
In addition to the three entities now receiving services under the agreement, Yampa Valley Medical Center and Yampa Valley Electric Association plan to join in the next phase, further aggregating the institutional broadband demand and the negotiating power that goes along with that.

The Water Street Inn in downtown Stillwater can proceed with plans to narrow a portion of Myrtle Street in order to make room for an expansion.
Under the plan approved by the Stillwater City Council Tuesday night, the southern edge of Myrtle just east of Water Street will be moved 3 feet north to accommodate the addition's tower element -- a nod to the clock tower of the Union Depot that formerly stood on the site.
The owner of the inn, Chuck Dougherty, is planning a 21,000-square-foot addition that would add about 20 rooms to the 41-room hotel. It includes a rooftop patio and a new primary entrance and lobby.
The council, however, put four special conditions on Dougherty's permit.
The conditions are designed to ensure that Dougherty "will build what he says he is going to and in a timely fashion," said Community Development Director Bill Turnblad. "There have been issues with performance on previously approved projects."
Among the issues: exterior building design and features were not completed as per a permit, and trash that was supposed to be kept enclosed in the building was not, Turnblad said.

Cedar Bluffs improves weight room -

CEDAR BLUFFS -- An addition to the Cedar Bluffs weight room should help Wildcat athletes get stronger and faster.
The Cedar Bluffs school board approved a $39,000 addition to the weight room earlier this spring. The addition includes four half racks, new bumper plates, a hammer press machine and a new adjustable cable machine.
Principal and athletic director Kevin Janssen had positive words about the changes.
"I love it all," he said. "Half racks allow us to do circuits. Our student-athletes can have proper rest time now.
The additions are a good recruiting tool for those students that dont live directly in Cedar Bluffs, but do live nearby. Janssen said the new equipment sends the message that the school is serious about athletics.
Typically 15-18 students use the weight room per day, but the addition is just in time for summer when more than 40 students will be using the room daily. Also a new scoreboard was added that is similar to a dry-erase board.
On the board, athletes can write their best scores in each lift and drill. The athletes will be able to compare how each other are doing. It should increase competition among teammates.
It will be a motivator for them, Janssen said. Coaches were very excited as well.

WILTON The new fire station addition was as shiny as the seven polished fire trucks lined up in the wider and taller bays as the public was welcomed to tour the fire house on Sunday.
An open house and waffle breakfast was held to showcase the fire station addition, the equipment and improved safety features. A steady stream of visitors toured the facility, which was completed recently.
The addition and improvements included three spacious bays that can accommodate larger fire trucks, a decontamination room, locker room, office space for the chief, an office for the two deputy chiefs and officers, a lobby for the public, a meeting room and long hallway to hang the firefighters gear.
Wilton Fire Chief Raymond Dick was pleased with the addition and said, We love the place compared to what we had and the safety concepts add to this. Its more up-to-date. It will be useful and quite an asset to the town in the future.
The safety measure really improved the fire station. There is a place to get dressed instead of getting dressed behind the trucks and a place to get cleaned-off so firefighters dont have to take contaminates home with them. Moral has improved, added Dick.
Chief Dick has been on the building committee for 20 years and was happy the addition is now a reality.
The $1.6 million project is a little under-budget with a few minor details to finish. I would like to thank the town people for trusting us for putting this structure in place and spending their money wisely and keeping everyone happy and safe, said Dick.
Its beautiful, said Wilton Selectman Kermit Williams. They did a great job and it turned out extremely well. Its high-quality construction. I think its going to make their jobs a lot safer and make it more comfortable for the firemen to serve the town. There are some extra spots for turn-out gear in the back and hopefully we can recruite about five or six more people to join in.
The Sweeney family of Wilton was impressed with the new addition. I think its great they finally have the services that they need. The expansion and the room they have is wonderful because it affords them the opportunity to assist the community in a more rapid response, said Lisa Sweeney. Her 8-year old son Andrews favorite truck he saw on the tour was the tanker.
I love it, said Deputy Chief Jim Cutler who was been with the department 28 years and added, Its nice not to have to share the bathroom with all the supplies we have.

VIDOR A local woman with a penchant for history was honored Friday morning for her contributions through the years as an educator, librarian and historian.
Vidor resident Theo Houston was recognized at a special ceremony on Friday morning as the Friends of the Vidor Public Library held an open house event for the public to introduce the newest addition to the library, the Theo Houston Room.
The Theo Houston Room contains a large collection of Texas history and genealogy, especially photographs and exhibits.
Houston has always enjoyed being in the background or working behind the scenes while piecing together her extensive collection.
Im appreciative of everyone for this honor, but I dont need the recognition, said a very humble Houston. I really enjoy doing this. The fun part for me is doing the work. The collection is not finished yet, it is a work in progress.
Houston, who has worked as an educator at Vidor Junior High and a librarian, has always enjoyed history.
When I was a student in school at South Park, I had three favorite subjects and those were history, journalism and art, she said. I taught Texas history as a teacher. As a librarian, I tried to build a Texas history collection. We started with a small room and had to expand as things grew.
The room also contains a large amount of photographs and images of the city of Vidor, including old buildings, such as the Vidor Rural School on Old Highway 90 and the first Vidor Library, which no longer exist.
Houston, who is also a published author and has several books with photographs from early Vidor history, said there is a purpose for having this included.
Vidor does not have any historic buildings to speak of, Houston explained. So, with this collection, we have tried to have something for future generations to look back at and see what Vidor was like. Im already working on my next book, volume six, and I hope to have it out in the fall.
