Getting Results: Delaware County Family Receives Donation From Local Contractor - May 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    DELAWARE COUNTY, Pa. -

Fox 29 showed you the heartbreaking story of a Delaware County family who was left broke after an unlicensed contractor took their money and never finished the job.

Last summer, the Brooks family paid a man $26,000, which was their entire savings to build a new 3-room addition on their Nether Providence Township home.

It turns out, the contractor wasn't licensed, wasnt permitted to do the job, and what was built had to be torn down.

"We got taken, and basically all I did was cry," said Janet Brooks.

However, hours after our story aired on Fox 29, the right person happened to be watching.

"They gave us the news that they were going to come out here with no money out of our pocket. They were going to fix this. We don't have to do anything," said Janet.

Reynolds Construction of King of Prussia just happened to be building a multi-million dollar expansion at Nether Providence Elementary School, just 3 blocks away from the Brooks home.

"It's good to breathe again," said Paul Brooks.

"So, many people in this township have come forward and offer to help us. I am so overwhelmed with it," said Janet.

Buckner, Boyer designated to clear roster room - May 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    ByCorey Brock/MLB.com|5/25/2014 3:15 P.M. ET

SAN DIEGO -- The roster shuffle continued Sunday for the Padres, who were able to clear room on the 40-man roster when they designated pitchers Billy Buckner and Blaine Boyer for assignment.

San Diego manager Bud Black said he's hopeful both will stay in the organization and end up at Triple-A El Paso.

The Padres needed to make room for the addition of first baseman/outfielder Tommy Medica and reliever Troy Patton, who was obtained Saturday from the Orioles.

Buckner's stay in San Diego was short -- like one-day short -- as he was added to the roster Saturday and started against the Cubs, allowing three runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings in a loss.

Boyer tossed two scoreless innings of relief Thursday against the Cubs. It was his first Major League appearance since 2011 when he was with the Mets.

With Thursday's off-day, the Padres won't need a fifth starter until they return home to face the Pirates on June 2. That means Ian Kennedy, who started Sunday against the Cubs, will likely start Friday when the Padres face the White Sox in Chicago.

Medica, who began the season with the Padres, hit .161 in 31 at-bats with the team before he was sent to El Paso last month. Since then, he's hit .213 with three home runs and 18 RBIs in 89 at-bats there.

SAN DIEGO -- It wasn't a complete surprise Saturday when Orioles manager Buck Showalter pulled Troy Patton into his office in Baltimore and informed the reliever he was being traded to the Padres.

"I had heard the whispers before so I was somewhat prepared for the possibility of getting traded," he said. "It wasn't a complete shock, but whenever it does actually happen, it's obviously such a drastic change, so it's a little bit to get used to."

Room has power to change broadband access in Steamboat, Routt County - May 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Steamboat Springs Several feet above where coal was once shoveled into an old boiler room in the Steamboat Springs School District administrative building now sits a room that has the potential to reshape broadband access in the city of Steamboat Springs and Routt County.

Members of the Northwest Colorado Broadband co-op and other public and private organizations gathered Tuesday afternoon to dedicate the room, known as a carrier-neutral location, that is the product of two-and-a-half years of hard work.

Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association CEO Tom Kern described the uphill battle the interested organizations faced in making the location a reality and how daunting the task looked at the start.

Man, were toast, Kern said to himself after a particularly disheartening meeting with various providers and users. But, we just kept at it.

The carrier-neutral location initially is enabling the school district, the city of Steamboat Springs and Routt County to pay far less for more connectivity, but the hope is that the effects will trickle down to customers large and small across the region.

A carrier-neutral location is a space owned by a disinterested third party where broadband providers can install equipment to connect to one another. In the case of the new CNL in the school districts building, the space will allow Northwest Colorado Broadband to connect to the newest middle-mile broadband provider in town: Mammoth Networks.

The middle mile is a segment of network infrastructure between the backbone of the Internet and last-mile providers, which serve individual customers.

Until now, the only true middle-mile provider in Steamboat Springs has been CenturyLink, which owned the fiber optic lines out of town.

Mammoth Networks expanded presence in Steamboat will allow it to compete with CenturyLink to provided middle-mile services to local Internet service providers as well as provide drastically less expensive connectivity to the large, institutional customers grouped under Northwest Colorado Broadband.

In addition to the three entities now receiving services under the agreement, Yampa Valley Medical Center and Yampa Valley Electric Association plan to join in the next phase, further aggregating the institutional broadband demand and the negotiating power that goes along with that.
