Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) and Carbon War Room (CWR)two leading nonprofits tackling climate change through market-based solutionsare aligning to catalyze an energy revolution that can unlock the greatest wealth-creating opportunity in modern history, the organizations announced today. RMI and CWR will together leverage the agile power of markets to combat climate change, bolster economic prosperity, and tackle other social and environmental issues created by the global dependence on fossil fuels. The organizations alliance will multiply their respective impacts by jointly accelerating demand and financing for low-carbon solutions that are technically feasible and cost effective today.
For the past five years, CWR has punched well above its weight, leveraging the creativity and convening power of fellow entrepreneurs to tackle climate challenge. By marrying Rocky Mountain Institutes analytical rigor and energy-system expertise with CWRs bold and agile entrepreneurial approach, together we can go further, faster," said Sir Richard Branson, founder of Carbon War Room.
The merged organization will leverage their complementary DNAmarket-based, independent, non-partisanand the distinct strengths of each to accelerate businesses, markets, and industries to a tipping point where clean energy solutions develop unstoppable momentum.
For more than 32 years, RMI had partnered with industry and business with significant successes in transforming energy use across the transportation, buildings, industrial, and electricity sectors, said Amory Lovins, RMI co-founder, chief scientist, and chairman emeritus. Now, we can capitalize on Carbon War Rooms proven ability to engage and excite corporate executives, entrepreneurs, and investors to rally around innovative ideas and take action.
Current RMI CEO Jules Kortenhorst will lead the alliance, while current CWR president Jos Maria Figueres will chair a single, combined Board of Trustees.
RMI and CWRs first joint program, the Ten Island Challenge, launched earlier this year. It is laying the groundwork to shift Caribbean island energy systems from dependence on expensive, dirty imported diesel to economies powered by clean, efficient, and renewable sources. Already under way in six countriesAruba, Colombia, the Bahamas, Grenada, Saint Lucia, and Turks and Caicosthe Ten Island Challenge will also demonstrate that entire economies can adopt low-carbon solutions while boosting private investment, enhancing and diversifying the local job market, and opening greater socioeconomic development opportunities.
Private-sector organizations like RMI and CWR have the independence and flexibility to convene the right players in the right markets, Figueres said. The real barrier is slow adoption rates, not inadequate technologies or lack of opportunities. The alliance can expand pockets of innovation and rapidly bring them to scale.
In addition to joint efforts in the Caribbean, RMI and CWR are also jointly working to mobilize impact in the following sectors:
Renewable, Distributed Electricity: Bringing clean, competitive distributed renewable energy solutions such as rooftop solar to scale through the development and implementation of markets that unleash untapped value for utilities, solar companies, technology providers, and customers

HAMILTON, Ohio -- The Ohio State Fire Marshal's Office said Monday the fire that killed three children in Hamilton started in the living room of their rental home Friday.
Investigators stopped short of saying what caused the blaze at 135 Franklin St., according to state fire marshal spokesperson Lindsey Burnworth. But she said there was a Christmas tree, heaters and electric outlets in the room.
Burnworth said it was too soon for investigations to determine what sparked the fire that killedAlex Flores-Ortiz, 7, and his sisters,SiclaliFlores-Ortiz, 10, andYeseniaFlores-Ortiz, 12.

Flores-Ortiz family members had earlier said Crystal Flores, the children's mother, believed the tree fell over in the living room and started the fire.
Trevor Snider, a Hamilton Fire Department investigator assisting in the case, said investigators found three battery-powered smoke detectors in the house.
"There was one on each floor," he said. "And, in addition, there was one on the first floor. Both were quite heavily damaged. One was actually missing to the point we could not check if it was operational or if it had a battery in it. The one on the second floor did have a battery and there was one in the basement with a battery."
Ismael"Michael" Flores-Ortiz, the children's father, remained at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
Ismael's sister told the Journal News on Monday that her brother suffered severe burns when he ran into the fire and tried to save his children trapped in their bedroom. He is improving, she said.
Crystal Flores and the couple's 2-year-old Anthony were treated and released from Fort Hamilton Hospital. A 9-year-old escaped the fire without injury.

Reimagining Pelican Hall -
December 14, 2014 by
Mr HomeBuilder
Norma Tiefel pauses for a moment as she steps up from the pool deck into her outdoor loggia, leading a visitor on a tour of her extensively renovated home, Pelican Hall, which was built in 1937 in the Estate Section. With her are husband Bill and their architect, Jeffery Smith.
Surveying the poolside pavilion, she explains that the loggia was much smaller when the former owners added it nearly 30 years ago.
I said to Jeff, We dont have a big enough loggia. Triple it, she recalls. Do you remember that, Jeff?
Do I remember? responds Smith, his wry smile indicating that indeed he does.
The loggia, today, is expansive, large enough for a sitting area, a dining table and a bar facing the new pool.
Enlarging the loggia was just one detail in a complex, three-year renovation and expansion project that was honored Friday by the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach. During a luncheon at The Breakers, the Tiefels accepted the annual Robert I. Ballinger Award, which recognizes historically sensitive renovation projects at large estates.
Back in the loggia, Bill Tiefel directs his guests attention to the wall behind the bar. On it is displayed a slatted bamboo screen from the 1920s, painted with an Asian scene. Bill presses a button, and to his obvious delight, the screen raises to reveal a flat-screen television.
His wife explains that she was glad to have found a suitable spot for the antique screen, which she had acquired years before the couple bought Pelican Hall in 2008; the matching screen is in the cabana bath directly opposite the bar.
If you own it, use it, she says. I want things around me that are meaningful.

(Left to right) Joe Solomon, Taylor Books manager Dan Carlisle and owner Ann Saville discuss the shops latest addition: a used book room. The store is hosting a Book Blizzard Thursday to gather donations for the room, which will open next month.
It started with a back room that had only a cat and a mountain of cardboard inside.
With a little vision and some elbow grease, Taylor Books has changed that ignored spaced into a used book room.
Joe Solomon, curator of the shops latest project, first approached bookstore manager Dan Carlisle with the idea during a job interview.
Part of his resume said something about running his own used bookshop, which I found very interesting, said Carlisle, who showed him the room during that meeting.
Solomon, while living in Brooklyn, ran a used bookstore on the Internet.
I vowed never ever, ever to do that ever again. Because while the books were real, I never met all the people the books were going out to and finding homes with, Solomon said.
The idea had been germinating at the shop for years, Carlisle said.
We have talked about it and talked about it. Gone through different phases of, Yes, we can do this, No, its not possible, Carlisle said.

ELDRIDGE There is a significant discrepancy in knowledge and talent inside Dan Knight's practice room.
In one corner, Bettendorf has three nationally ranked wrestlers, two other state champions and a state runner-up.
The other side of the room features a plethora of inexperience, particularly at the upper three weights, after 220-pounder Max Erpelding has been ruled out for the season.
For Bettendorf to have any opportunity of defending its state duals title come February, Knight realizes the development of the latter is paramount.
"The attitude is there, the work ethic is there, but they just need mat time and to do things over and over again," Knight said after the Bulldogs defeated Davenport Central 80-0 and North Scott 43-24 in a Mississippi Athletic Conference double dual Thursday night at The Pit. "It will take time."
In the meantime, there is added pressure on Bettendorf's established wrestlers to produce bonus points.
They delivered.
After North Scott won four of the first five bouts to build a 21-3 advantage, Bettendorf recovered with four falls, a major decision and forfeit win to seal the triumph.
"For me, it is more individual pressure than team pressure," said 120-pounder Jacob Schwarm, who had a pair of first-period falls on the night. "I'm always looking for pins and bonus points."
In addition to Schwarm, Jack Wagner (113 pounds), Fredy Stroker (145) and Jacob Woodard (152) had pins for the Bulldogs. It marked the 100th career fall for Stroker.

BC Lions Annual Locker Room Sale Set for Saturday

Kiyen's Japanese Restaurant is an odd-looking place. There's the typical hostess station setup at the entrance, but piled all around that are tables, chairs and other dining room ephemera that serve as a wall to block off half the dining room. Apparently, the part that is blocked off was originally designed to accommodate tableside hibachi cooking, left over from the previous occupant, Papa Sushi. It seems Kiyen's has decided not to go that route. The open side of the dining room is free from all clutter, though, and provides a nice space for lunch or dinner.
We bring up the entrance because we have to admit that our first impression of Kiyen's wasn't a great one. In addition to the rummage sale look by the front door, there was only one server for the busy dining room, which meant we spent quite a bit more time with our menus than was necessary. When our poor, harried server did finally make it to our table, she apologized immediately for the wait, took our order and spent the rest of the meal steadily changing that bad first impression into something quite good through a generous dose of hard work.
Our moods brightened even further when our food, an assortment of sushi, came. The basic tuna roll ($7) was filled with large pieces of fresh, ruby red tuna, wrapped in the sort of lightly seasoned, slightly warm rice and seaweed. The spicy tuna roll ($7) didn't fare quite as well the tuna was minced and a touch mushy but it still tasted good. A final tuna-themed roll, the Kiss of Fire Roll ($12), was a combination of the other two: minced tuna and cucumber wrapped in rice and seaweed, then topped with more fish and a spicy sauce a tuna lover's dream. Some of the wraps fell apart, but we managed.
On a follow-up visit for dinner we branched out and tried some of the non-sushi portions of the menu. A plate of chicken fried rice ($7.99) came out piping hot and chock-full of goodies. A bowl of miso soup ($2.99), sadly, suffered from some separation issues that left a layer of clear water on top and all the miso at the bottom. The dish of the night was the oddly named "Heading to the Mountain" salad ($9.99), which piled seared tuna and fried noodles atop a bowl of spring mix to great effect, and was only made better by the addition of a tangy dressing. Not being able to go without sushi completely, we made our way through a California roll ($5) and a spider roll ($12), and were pleased by both, especially the delicious tempura-battered soft-shell crab in the spider. The dining room wasn't nearly as chaotic on this second visit, and our server the same as before took excellent care of us.
Kiyen's is tucked away in the Centre at Chenal shopping center on the east side of Chenal Parkway just south of the mammoth Promenade at Chenal meaning that it may not stand out from the gilded crowd. The cluttered and understaffed dining room issues certainly don't help this. The kitchen is talented, though, and everyone was so friendly on both our visits that we think Kiyen's has the potential to become one of Little Rock's top restaurants for both traditional Japanese food and Asian fusion cuisine. We saw things on the menu that we'll try when we return and for us, that's the best sign of a good restaurant we can think of.

FULTON COUNTY, Ga.
A Duluth mother says she found a hidden room of mold in her rental room after an unexplained illness.
As a mom knowing your child was exposed to that, said Cherylyn Woody, the tenant.
The last couple of months she has gone to the pediatrician, she had an inhaler, shes never had problems before, Woody said of her 4-year-old daughter.
In addition, Woody showed Channel 2 Action News lab test results that detected eight fungi in her sinuses. The two moved into the Duluth home about nine months ago.
Woody, who was alarmed, hired a mold inspector from BIO ONE Atlanta to come out and check her rental property on Highland Pine Way.
At first, inspector Paul Cervino says he did not see any problems in the main house or the crawl space.
Upon further investigation I pulled this board right over and we found a room segregated from the rest of the house, Cervino said.
Cervino said the room, hidden behind boards, was out of view.
We noticed there is a flight of stairs that leads into an access point that has recently been covered up with sheet rock and plaster, Cervino said.
