COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS Three men were arrested over the weekend after a woman in a basement condominium found a bullet hole in the ceiling of her 4-year-old child's room.

The bullet also went through a TV and ended up on the child's dresser.

The incident allegedly started Friday night at the Waterside Cove Condos, 1227 E. 7370 South. There was a dispute in the condo above the child's room, said Cottonwood Heights Police Sgt. Corbett Ford. The exact nature of the dispute was not immediately known.

Investigators were still trying to sort out stories Monday, Ford said, but from what they could ascertain, several people pistol-whipped a man inside the upstairs condo. That man responded by pulling out a gun and firing two shots, Ford said.

It was not known Monday whether the gunman was aiming at someone or firing "warning" shots, police said. One round went through a wall and outside the condo. The other went through the floor into the condo below.

"It's a bedroom of a 4-year-old that was not home at the time. But it goes through and lands on the dresser," Ford said.

The man who allegedly fired the shots and was pistol-whipped ran away, Ford said.

SLO. SGM. SGO. Whatever your state calls them, they can be more than overwhelming. When our school began the task of writing ours more than a year ago, I was completely frustrated. Although I had taught for more than 18 years, I felt as though I was starting completely over. The language I was hearing seemed foreign. In order to complete my Student Learning Objective (SLO) correctly, I felt as though I needed more training, so I went to as many sessions as I could find and joined our SLO committee this year. This does not make me an expert, by any means. However, I have begun to navigate this uncharted territory and want to pass on my knowledge. This has always been the goal of this blog.

I am from the state of Ohio, so my SLO aligns with our state fine arts standards. The example I will be sharing is mine alone and represents the requirements put forth by my state. Please read your SLO template & checklist carefully to be sure you cover everything that is asked of you! I ask that you only use my SLO as a guideline and not copy it in its entirety. I love helping other art teachers, but this took a lot of work!

Now that the disclaimer is out of the way, let's dive in. We will look at my first grade SLO section by section.

Baseline and Trend Data Notes:Your district will put forth guideline for completing your pre-assessments. The information gathered from these assessments will be used to write this section of the SLO. In addition, any information that you have gathered in your years of teaching will be helpful. This is called Perception Data and is very valuable. In order to be considered "trend" data, there has to be 3 years worth of assessment scores. Because many of us are just beginning this process, that data may not be available. Including a chart detailing your students' scores may not be required, but it is very useful. Be sure not to leave any gaps between the percentages (For example, putting 0-30% and then skipping to 40-50% would leave a gap). Be sure to list your students' strengths as well as their weaknesses. I am on our SLO committee and many teachers forgot to add this. Contextual factors (factors that my affect student learning) may be added in this section as well.

    For example:

    Pre-Assessment data: Pre-Test Results (Score Ranges) # of students & contextual factors 20 30% 6 (2 IEP, 1 504, 2 ADHD)

Example: Student Learning Objective (SLO) Template

Teacher Name: Denise Pannell Content Area and Course(s): Art Grade Level(s): 1 Academic Year: 2014-15

Please use the guidance provided in addition to this template to develop components of the student learning objective and populate each component in the space below.

ICU room Pearls - December 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Answer is probably 45 degrees.Elevation of the head of the bed is a must thing in ICU, unless some contra-indication. It is an essential part of VAP (ventilator associated pneumonia) bundle. But there is some debate about the extent of elevation need to be done. Accepted level is atleast 30 degrees but many guidelines wrote for 45 degrees. IHI recommends elevation anywhere from 30 to 45 degrees 3.

Study from The Netherlands 1 compared 109 patients in the supine group to 112 in the semirecumbent group. Target for semirecumbent group was 45 degrees but the targeted backrest elevation of 45 for semirecumbent positioning was not reached, so supine position (10) was compared with achieved semirecumbent positioning (28). Elevation of head of bed to 28 did not prevent the development of VAP.

7 years back Drakulovic and coll. published their landmark study in lancet showing 83% decrease of bacteriologically confirmed VAP in a group of patients treated in a semirecumbent position of 45 2.

So the answer is probably 45 degrees or to be diplomatically right - atleast more than 30 degrees.

But is it easy to do and keep head of bed elevated to 45 degrees in practical world ?. The study group found that despite the presence of dedicated research nurses to control and maintain patient positioning, the semirecumbent treatment position with an aimed backrest elevation of 45 is not feasible for mechanically ventilated patients.

Another interesting question raised in discussion of first study: Is semirecumbent positioning itself a risk for VAP ? !!!, as pooling of colonized oropharyngeal fluids above the inflated cuff of the endotracheal tube is common in mechanically ventilated patients and it is possible that the semirecumbent position (and all movements to keep it) stimulates leakage of oropharyngeal fluid by means of gravity. Whether ETT with continuous aspiration of subglottic secretions (CASS) will be more effective than semirecumbent positioning?

Thrifty Decor Chick: Our warm and cozy family room - December 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Since the beginning of August, Ive been cravin some warm colors around here. Have I mentioned fall is my favorite time of year? A few times? Well, here I go one. more. time. ๐Ÿ™‚

The warm colors of fall make my heart go pitter pat. Theyre just sowell, warm. Ah DUH. Im a wordsmith you know. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Ive never been one to really change out my decor for the seasons I mean, I decorate for fall and the holidays and all that good stuff, but Ive never changed out drapes, pillows, beddingall the bigger items.

But like I said, its August and Im trying with all my might to hold off on putting the pumpkins out. Youd be proud of me Im determined to hold off till September. (September 1st, but whatev.)

So I figured I could cozy up the joint with a few changes but I wanted to make sure theyd work into the winter, spring and summer as well by making just a few changes when the time comes.

I was on a mission -- make our family room warm and cozy and fallish without necessarily being fallish. Just a schosh of warm. A leeetle bit of cozy. Just a smooch. Like youre kissin your sister. (Name that movie!)

My first goal was to find a new rug. I got a new one back in January, but it was very spring/summery:

It was also way to small for this room. I layered a larger rug underneath it, but as time went on, it still wasnt feeling big enough. And then Pee Cat struck again (CURSES!!! She owes me big time cash!!) and we needed to replace the big rug anyway.

    Who is a "protected" employee?

Someone who has a mom, dad, niece, cousin, in-law who works in 'high' places at Tweed or at one of the Tweed branches, which are many.

These protected employees are immune to prosecution of any kind.

Lori Evanko is a victim of mobbing.

Kandis Rivera, 35, an English-as-a-second-language teacher under Evankos supervision, faked 275 hours of an administrative internship at the Soundview school, Evanko charges.

An internship is rigorous, Evanko told The Post. You have to work with a principal and assistant principals on things like budget, curriculum, instruction, and be assigned certain responsibilities. She did none of that with us.

Under Evanko, JHS 125 improved from an F grade in 2012 to a B in 2013. But the Department of Education abruptly fired Evanko on June 27 nine days after she and two of her then- assistant principals met with agents of special schools investigator Richard Condon to report Rivera.

The SCI probe is ongoing, a spokewoman said.

Evanko has filed a claim against the city, saying she was fired in retaliation.

Rivera, a teacher since 2006, received a masters degree in administration and leadership from Fordhams school of education in May. The degree puts educators on track to become principals.

Tiny Laguna Beach condo feels roomier with ship-shape design concepts - December 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

There are walk-in closets in Malibu larger than Steven Jones' Laguna Beach home. So when it came time for the designer to decorate his 320-square-foot pied--terre overlooking St. Ann's Beach, he treated the space as if he were designing a boat. "Everything had to be very intentional and purpose-driven," says the former vice president of visual merchandising for Quiksilver, who cut his design teeth creating environments for the surfer fashion industry in the '80s.

He began by stripping the apartment of its Mediterranean villa trappings with the idea of turning the condo into a classic 1940s beach abode. Painting the brown-and-beige walls a bright white made the space appear larger. In addition, "the light comes in and bounces around, lightening the room," says Jones. "It also creates a gallery-like backdrop where anything you put on the walls is going to pop."

Jones advises keeping the material palette "super simple" when designing a small space, "to keep the busyness down." In addition to painting all surfaces white, he kept other interior appointments appliances, sinks, countertop and window shades a snowy hue as well. He also used the same 1-inch glass tiles in the kitchen backsplash and floor, as well as the bathroom floor and the living room fireplace surround.

Replacing the dark shag carpet with a lighter wall-to-wall sisal helped to unify and enlarge the space, while removal of the acoustic cottage cheese ceiling created a sleeker, modern aesthetic. Jones also replaced the makeshift hot-plate kitchen with a ship-tight galley and added a shelf above the farmer's sink to showcase knickknacks.

Multifunctional pieces are another good idea for a small space, he says. To divide the kitchen area from the living room, the designer built a low wall that doubles as a bookcase. His new custom-made daybed features a lift-up storage compartment underneath, while a new dresser that separates the kitchen from the bedroom space has shelves on either side for books. He also built it shallow, 15 inches deep, "so it didn't stick too far out into the room."

Other furnishings were well-edited to a few essential pieces a lounge and a pair of vintage chairs, a coffee table, a bed even though Jones, an avowed flea market addict, owns two 40-foot-long shipping containers bulging with retro furnishings and had loads of pieces from which to choose. (He uses them in the boutique real estate company Better Shelter that he started after leaving Quiksilver in 2005. The company specializes in renovating homes by adding age-appropriate details light fixtures, stained glass, architectural trim, hooks, handles and door pulls and then stages the houses with a combination of flea market finds and more contemporary pieces from Ikea, West Elm and CB2.)

Jones applied the same design recipe to his tiny lair where items from his quirky collections were combined with architectural remnants. Walls were hung with surfer art, and he brought in some campy accessories, such as his '50s leaping fish lamp, sea horse candlesticks and an array of fish objets. He inserted a 1940s paneled front door with vertical reed glass, which sets the period tone upon entering. Lucite door knobs on a new dresser and a period pedestal sink, toilet and medicine chest added authenticity. "I wanted to make it look as if everything had always been here, as well as add some personality to my little stucco box."

Chinese room – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - December 26, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Chinese room is a thought experiment presented by John Searle (1932-living) to challenge the claim that it is possible for a digital computer running a program to have a "mind" and "consciousness"[a] in the same sense that people do, simply by virtue of running the right program. The experiment is intended to help refute a philosophical position that Searle named "strong AI":

"The appropriately programmed computer with the right inputs and outputs would thereby have a mind in exactly the same sense human beings have minds."[b]

To contest this view, Searle writes in his first description of the argument: "Suppose that I'm locked in a room and ... that I know no Chinese, either written or spoken". He further supposes that he has a set of rules in English that "enable me to correlate one set of formal symbols with another set of formal symbols", that is, the Chinese characters. These rules allow him to respond, in written Chinese, to questions, also written in Chinese, in such a way that the posers of the questions who do understand Chinese are convinced that Searle can actually understand the Chinese conversation too, even though he cannot. Similarly, he argues that if there is a computer program that allows a computer to carry on an intelligent conversation in a written language, the computer executing the program would not understand the conversation either.

The experiment is the centerpiece of Searle's Chinese room argument which holds that a program cannot give a computer a "mind", "understanding" or "consciousness", regardless of how intelligently it may make it behave. The argument is directed against the philosophical positions of functionalism and computationalism, which hold that the mind may be viewed as an information processing system operating on formal symbols. Although it was originally presented in reaction to the statements of artificial intelligence researchers, it is not an argument against the goals of AI research, because it does not limit the amount of intelligence a machine can display. The argument applies only to digital computers and does not apply to machines in general. This kind of argument against AI was described by John Haugeland as the "hollow shell" argument.[4]

Searle's argument first appeared in his paper "Minds, Brains, and Programs", published in Behavioral and Brain Sciences in 1980. It has been widely discussed in the years since.

Searle's thought experiment begins with this hypothetical premise: suppose that artificial intelligence research has succeeded in constructing a computer that behaves as if it understands Chinese. It takes Chinese characters as input and, by following the instructions of a computer program, produces other Chinese characters, which it presents as output. Suppose, says Searle, that this computer performs its task so convincingly that it comfortably passes the Turing test: it convinces a human Chinese speaker that the program is itself a live Chinese speaker. To all of the questions that the person asks, it makes appropriate responses, such that any Chinese speaker would be convinced that he is talking to another Chinese-speaking human being.

The question Searle wants to answer is this: does the machine literally "understand" Chinese? Or is it merely simulating the ability to understand Chinese?[c] Searle calls the first position "strong AI" and the latter "weak AI".[d]

Searle then supposes that he is in a closed room and has a book with an English version of the computer program, along with sufficient paper, pencils, erasers, and filing cabinets. Searle could receive Chinese characters through a slot in the door, process them according to the program's instructions, and produce Chinese characters as output. If the computer had passed the Turing test this way, it follows, says Searle, that he would do so as well, simply by running the program manually.

Searle asserts that there is no essential difference between the roles of the computer and himself in the experiment. Each simply follows a program, step-by-step, producing a behavior which is then interpreted as demonstrating intelligent conversation. However, Searle would not be able to understand the conversation. ("I don't speak a word of Chinese," he points out.) Therefore, he argues, it follows that the computer would not be able to understand the conversation either.

Searle argues that without "understanding" (or "intentionality"), we cannot describe what the machine is doing as "thinking" and since it does not think, it does not have a "mind" in anything like the normal sense of the word. Therefore he concludes that "strong AI" is false.
