This is a historical map of the Central Addition in Ottumwa.
OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The riverfront housing known as the Central Addition in Ottumwa is long gone, but on Thursday night it was brought back to life as part of the Wapello County Historical Society's lecture series.
Wapello County Supervisor Jerry Parker, who was raised in the Central Addition, made the presentation about the district to the standing-room only crowd.
The Central Addition was founded in 1890 and contained around 600 housing lots.
It was located south of the downtown area on the Des Moines River, exposing the district to heavy flooding almost annually.
Parker said the district provided cheap land and provided a safe haven for the less fortunate residents, especially during the great depression.
The Central Addition was also known for its rugged and individualistic residents.
Central Addition was right in the middle of Ottumwa, and you would expect them to be more of a part of Ottumwa than anywhere else; then anyone out on the fringes. But that wasn't so, they were their own island there, Parker said.
Parker also said that the Central Addition was an area of town that the police were cautious to patrol because of the criminal enterprises that were run from the district.
The government eventually forced residents to move out of the Central Addition after a devastating flood in 1947.

The sisters are back.
After waiting 18 months for their new residence to be built, the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur are returning en masse to Buffalos West Side.
The residence, located on Lafayette Avenue between an old convent and a newer administrative building, primarily will house retired sisters. They began moving in this week.
The work also included an overhaul of the convent, where sisters who are still working will live. Together, the buildings will accommodate about 25 women, a third of the entire order.
The Catholic order of women religious has deep roots in Western New York.
The sisters were badly in need of better living space, especially for the elderly and infirm among them.
Its the largest concentration of St. Mary of Namur nuns to live in a single location in many years.
But the orders leaders said the new facilities werent built solely for their comfort.
They chose to stay on the West Side to make a difference, especially among a population of new immigrants who need help learning English and understanding American culture.
We want to be at the heart of where theres still outreach, said Sister Judith Carroll, provincial superior. If we had gone to a place out farther, it wouldnt have, I dont think for us, that possibility of continuing the mission. Even as reduced as it may be, thats part of who we are.

127-Room Hotel Conversion Proposed For East Boston Warehouse

When discussing the blockbuster trade of Jimmy Graham this week, New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis cited a desire to upgrade the defense.
One of the biggest needs on that defense resides at the corner position.
With the market dwindling, New Orleans landed former Patriots corner Brandon Browner -- whose contract option New England declined.
The team announced it had agreed to a contract with Browner on Thursday. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported the deal is for three years and roughly $18 million.
One reason the Saints looked to splurge on a 30-year-old corner is the presence of lanky receivers Julio Jones, Roddy White, Kelvin Benjamin, Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans residing in the NFC South. Browner might not have the foot speed to stick with the likes of Jones, but at 6-foot-4 he would help immensely in the red zone.
Another reason the Saints added Browner, per Rapoport, is that the veteran would help bring a needed presence to a locker room that has seen a drain on leadership the last few seasons.
We believe the one reason the Patriots declined to bring back Browner even though they are thin at the position is that Bill Belichick simply found the corner's play lacking.
Still, with a shrinking defensive back market and the Saints' glaring need for size at the position, a union in the Big Easy makes sense for both parties.

It's fair to say that Nebraska men's basketball coach Tim Miles is a frustrated man these days.
After witnessing a 74-46 home loss to Iowa on Sunday, Miles decided to ban his players from their locker room for the "foreseeablefuture," accordingto the Omaha World-Herald.
You never want to throw your players under the bus, Miles said, "but that was beyond disappointing. That's not what we represent.
"We quit easily today, and thats a great disappointment."
Because Miles apparently believes the team members cannot represent the university in a proper fashion until they cleanse themselves of reeking play, he has decided toliterally bar his players from the locker-room showers.
"There will be chains on the doors locking it from the outside, Miles said, "until further notice."
In addition to the locker-room ban, Miles also is barring his players from speaking to reporters.
Miles didn't say whetherhis locker-room ban extends to road games. The Cornhuskers play at No. 24 Ohio State on Thursday, but it seems an anticipated loss to the Buckeyes wouldn't be as bad as a smelly bus ride to the airportafterward.
Nebraska has lost five consecutive games and is 5-10 in Big Ten Conference play.
Asked where players would dress for games, Miles responded, "Good luck. They're creative."
