    National Roofing Week – nrca.net - June 10, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

    June 5-11, 2016

Click here to view a video outlining the activities leading up to and during National Roofing Week.

Organized by NRCA, National Roofing Week takes place each summer. Its mission is to increase awareness across the U.S. about the significance of roofs to every home and business and share the good deeds of the industry. National Roofing Week also promotes the importance of hiring a professional roofing contractor and making informed decisions about maintaining or replacing any roof system.

The roof is one of the most important components of a home or business' structure, yet it is often taken for granted until it falls into disrepair. NRCA encourages members to participate in National Roofing Week by engaging in their communities and informing the public about the essential role roofs and professional roofing contractors play in every community.

In celebration of National Roofing Week, NRCA hosts an annual Children's Art Contest, sponsored by A.C.T. Metal Deck Supply. NRCA members and their employees can participate by having their children, grandchildren, step-children, nieces and nephews enter artwork in the contest.

In addition, NRCA members and staff members celebrate National Roofing Week through contributions to charitable organizations in their communities. Members throughout the U.S. are encouraged to share their stories of charitable giving with NRCA, who will promote their efforts through social media, NRCA's Roof Scoop blog and Professional Roofing magazine.

NRCA also will be hosting a social media campaign to highlight our members and their contributions to the roofing industry. Members are encouraged to share photos that will focus on a different theme each day during National Roofing Week, tag NRCA and use the hashtag #nationalroofingweek.

How to Choose a Roof for Your Home | Today’s Homeowner - May 30, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

How to Choose a Roof for Your Home By: Joe Cuhaj

From natural materials like slate and wood to manmade products such as asphalt, sheet metal, and plastic polymers; there are more types and styles of roofing to choose from today than ever before. While each has its advantages and shortcomings, they all can add a distinctive design element to your home. So which one is right for you?

There are many factors to consider when selecting a roof including:

Some types of roofing may be better suited for your house than others. Factors such as the slope of the roof and strength of the framing could limit your choices. In areas prone to wildfires or hurricanes, look for a product with a high fire rating or good wind resistance. In addition, steps can be taken during the installation of many types of roofing to improve their resistance to fire or wind. Below is a rundown on the different types of roofing available.

Asphalt shingles are the most popular type of roofing for homes, comprising over 80% of residential roofing market.

Photo Courtesy of Metal Sales Manufacturing Corporation

While more expensive than asphalt, metal roofing lasts longer and is more wind resistant.

These durable synthetic roofing shingles resemble either wood shakes or slate.

Photo Courtesy of Ludowici Roof Tile

While brittle and heavy, clay tiles can last a long time and are very fire resistant.

Photo Courtesy of Eagle Roofing Products

Less expensive than clay tiles, concrete roof tiles are also heavy but can last a long time and are very fire resistant.

Slate is one of the oldest roofing materials. Though brittle and expensive, it is very durable and resists both wind and fire.

Wood shingles and shakes made from rot resistant woods have low fire resistance unless treated.

The following table gives an overview of the various materials available. Weight and cost are listed per square of roofing (100 square feet) and include both labor and materials. Actual price may vary depending on the particular product used, the complexity of the job, and labor costs in different parts of the country. The cost per year indicates the price of the labor and materials per square over the roofs projected life.

There are two warranties to consider when roofing your home. The manufacturers warranty covers defects in the roofing material. A separate warranty may be issued by the roofing contractor to handle problems arising from improper installation.

A warranty is no better than the company that writes it, so make sure the product comes from a reputable manufacturer with the financial resources to stand behind it. This applies to the roofing contractor as well, since a fly-by-night roofer may be long gone before their guarantee expires.

It is important to read the warranty carefully to see what is covered and excluded. Some warranties are not transferable when you sell your house while others are limited to the cost of materials or are prorated over time.

Your roof is your homes single most important defense when it comes to protecting it from the elements, so it makes sense to make sure its done right.

Basic Types and Cost of Roofing Materials - May 30, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Updated January 11, 2016.

Roofing doesn't rate high on the list of exciting home remodeling projects. Most homeowners just want the thing done--attractively and at a reasonable cost.

Prices range from dirt cheap to blindingly sky-high. If youdivorce the price of roofing materials from related expenditures--labor, market conditions, season, etc.--you see how raw materials drive the price of the entire project up or down.

Since asphalt shingles are derived from petroleum, and petroleum prices fluctuate wildly, asphalt shingles change from season to season. Similarly, copper roofing skyrockets in price due to the cost of raw copper.

    Low

    Medium

    High

Composite shingles--also known as asphalt shingles--are the most popular type of roofing material around. These three-tab shingles are made of fiberglass mat topped with asphalt and mineral granules. An all-round good choice for most home roofing needs, composite shingles typically come with 20 to 30 year warranties. Every roofing company knows how to install composite shingles, and should you lose a shingle down the road, they are easy to replace. More

Rolled roofing material is the mainstay of outbuildings and other less-than-beautiful structures, and of low-slope residential roofs. Roll roofing, as the name implies, comes in rolls of 100 square feet, each about 3 feet wide. It's a fast and dead-cheap way to roof a building like a shed or workshop, where beauty isn't the most important thing. It's a necessary material when covering a roof with no or low slope: roll roofing is good at holding back moisture. More

No, metal roofing isn't just for warehouses anymore. Metal roofs have come of age--they look cooly industrial, even on high-end mansions; are fire-resistant, provide no food for wood-boring insects such as termites or carpenter ants; and can provide good resale value. On the downside, metal roofs are more expensive than composite shingles and do require installation by highly experienced installers. Eco-friendly is on everyone's mind. If you are one, metal roofing is considered a sustainable building material. More

A truly unorthodox type of roof, the green or living roof nevertheless holds much promise. It can put oxygen back in the air, provide thermal insulation to your house, absorb rainwater, and even allow you to grow plants. How? Simply by layering your roof with waterproof membrane and providing adequate drainage. Green roofs can be "intensive," meaning capable of supporting large plants and people, or "extensive," which means thin and light-weight growth such as moss. More

A slate roof is for the dedicated home remodeler who will accept nothing less (not even rubber "slate" that looks amazingly like real slate). Slate is real stone. Fortunately, slate has a tendency to cleave off in thin sheets, making it easy to quarry. Slate is best installed only be highly qualified installers of slate--who can be hard to find, especially west of the Mississippi. One DIY slate installer did his roof (2,240 sq. ft.) for about $15,000. But remember, that was do it yourself and he only managed to install about 100 sq. ft. per day. More

How to Reroof Your House (with Pictures) – wikiHow - May 30, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Edit Article

Four Parts:Getting StartedPreparing the RoofPutting on the New RoofMaintaining Your RoofCommunity Q&A

Any homeowner wants their house to be as safe and secure as possible. It all starts with the roof. Though roofing materials generally have a lifespan of 20-30 years, roofs will wear out sooner or later and can cost several thousand dollars to be done professionally. Fortunately, with the right materials, planning, precautions, and the proper application of elbow grease, any homeowner can re-roof their house safely and cheaply. See Step 1 for more information.

    5

    1

    2

Rent a trash container. It's useful to rent a large trash container to throw the old shingles into. usually, this costs somewhere in the neighborhood of $200. If you keep it as close as possible to the house and cover AC units, porches, and other things you don't want to dent or litter with roofing nails and other debris, you can cut down on clean-up time later.

    3

    4

Remove the metal flashing around chimneys, vents, and valleys in the roof. Some roofers will reuse the metal flashing if it's good shape, in which case you'd want to carefully remove the nails and pry it up. Flashing in the valleys is almost always trashed, though, so be judicious. Consider replacing all of it while you're in the middle of the project. If it looks suspect, toss it and install new flashing.

    5

Clean the roof. Sweep the roof as clean as possible, taking the time to remove any stray nails that didn't come up in the removal of the shingles. Reattach loose boards in the sheathing. Examine the sheathing for damage and rotted boards, replacing the damaged sections accordingly.

    6

    7

    1

Mount drip molding around the perimeter of the roof. Use roofing nails, spaced 12-inches (30-cm) apart, extending 1/4 inch (6.5 mm) to 3/8 inch (1 cm) beyond the edge of the roof, over the felt paper.

    2

    3

Pop a series of chalk lines with 6-inch (15-cm) spacing. Use the chalk marks to maintain straight course lines for the shingles.

    4

    5

    6

    7

    8

    9

    1

Do a thorough inspection of your roof at least once a year. If you've gone to all the effort to put a new roof on your house properly, pencil in a regular inspection to make sure it stays up to snuff. Wait for warm weather days to inspect and also do an inspection after a period of rain to check for leaks or other issues. Especially in areas with high winds and nasty weather, it's very important for any homeowner to haul out the ladder and carefully check their roof.

    2

Look for cracked caulk or rust on your flashing. Metal is especially susceptible to the elements. Examine any exposed flashing for signs that it might be wearing some and re-caulk any effected areas.

    3

    4

    5

Look for asphalt granules in the gutters. When your shingles start to wear out, you'll start seeing the little protective beads from the shingles come off in the rain and end up in the gutters. This is a sign that the shingles are nearing the end of their life span and will need replaced soon, because they're no longer able to stand up to the sun's UV rays. Start planning for another re-roofing.

Roofing Costs & Prices | How Much Does a New Roof Cost … - May 30, 2016 by Mr HomeBuilder

Questions to consider before calculating the cost of a new roof:

When calculating the cost of a roofing job, you will need to figure out two separate costs: materials and labor.

The cost of materials can be calculated by finding the square footage of your roof, looking at the type of material you want to use and figuring out how much of that material you need. Most roofing contractors give their materials cost in terms of 10 ft. x 10 ft. squares (100 square feet). Most materials cost about$150 per square. This list will give a sense for the relative costs of materials.

It should be noted that modified bitumen, a form of asphalt roll roofing, may only be used on flat roofs. All other roofing styles may be used on both flat and pitched roofs.Learn more about roofing materials here.

Additional materials and tools will be required to do roof repair. Chief among these will be a ladder, for which you want to err on the side of caution regarding the length. Long-time homeowners may already own a big ladder that they can use to get to the roof, but new homeowners may need to include a ladder investment in their estimate of roofing costs and prices if they plan on making it a DIY job. A new ladder can be anywhere from$200 to upwards of $500depending on how high your roof is.

Other materials include fasteners and basic tools like a hammer or drill, protective sealant materials, ventilation materials, flashing, leak barriers and more. Costs of these materials vary widely, though they will generally be a fraction of the cost of the main roofing materials.

A good rule of thumb formeasuring your roof's pitchis that the average cost of labor for roofing is generally equivalent to the cost of materials for that size of roof. This means that by doing a roofing project by yourself, you could save about half the money you would otherwise spend. On the other hand, you will have to spend about two to three times as much time as a professional contractor with roofing experience to do a job that might not be as good.

Installing a roof is relatively forgiving work, especially if you're using inexpensive materials. "Forgiving" here means that if you make a mistake, you can usually repair it at little cost. However, if you don't take your time and make sure that there are no leaky spots, you might run the risk of permanent damage to your home. It is a job where you want to go slowly and steadily. In climates where weather is unpredictable, you may not have a good window of opportunity to work as slowly as you would like, which would be another reason to hire a contractor for the job.

Once you have theroofthat you want, it's important to maintain your investment. No matter whattype of roofyou have, the key to the longevity relies on maintenance and care. Maintenance should be done at least semi-annually, if not seasonally. An inspector should walk your roof slowly and inspect it thoroughly, as well as get rid of all leaves, branches, twigs and any other debris. An electric or gas blower does this job nicely. A roofingexpert will look for things such as broken or missing shingles, shakes or tiles, and make the necessaryrepairs.

Chimneys, roof-mounted AC units, roof-mounted solar panels, dormer vents, heat vents, plumbing vents, and valleys and crickets, are the main areas where you will find leaking. Your roof will receive more abuse from the elements than any other part of the building. Preventative maintenance will save you money on your roof by providing a longer life.
