Rain last month drove up calls for service
BUSY TIMELino Rivera works on the roof of a home in Thousand Oaks on March 6. Recent storms have caused a surge of new customers for local roofing companies. BOBBY CURTIS/Acorn Newspapers When it rains, it pours.
That is certainly the case for the roofing industry, which has seen a boom in business since the torrential downpour last month.
The National Weather Service reported Camarillo saw 2.85 inches of rain on Feb. 17the most rain in one day the city has had in four decades.
It was frantic, Dawn Espinosa of Camarillo-based GreatWay Roofing told the Acorn. Over that one weekend, we received over 100 calls about leaks. Even now, were still trying to catch up.
Other Camarillo roofing companies have also been flooded with calls from homeowners throughout Ventura and Los Angeles counties seeking estimates.
Ron Ostlund of Fortress Roofing said he has been incredibly busy the last few weeks.
Its so much increased business that I am actually turning work down, the business owner said. Im a really, really small company, and I do most of the estimates myself and all the work myself, and theres no way I can handle the activity thats going on.
But the Camarillo resident, who said he has at least a three month backlog of jobs, is certainly trying.
Ostlund said many people dont even know they have roof problems until it rains and water starts leaking into their homes.
Before the heavy rains, (business) was a little stagnant, the roofer said. People dont spend any money on their roof unless they have to. Thats just kind of human nature. . . .
Its a little overwhelming, but Im not complaining. Its definitely good for business in the long run.
While many roofers are trying to capitalize on the increase in business, Fred and Susan Esquivel of Esquivels Roofing said their situation is different.
The business received between 50 and 75 calls a day during the rains, a volume they were not able to handle given their small crew and the fact that the company is winding down after three decades in business.
Susan, the office manager, said Esquivels Roofing is finishing its already scheduled projects over the next few months before Fred retires.
Were doing roofs over again because weve been around so long, said the office manager, adding the company did respond to requests for service from its longtime customers.
The irony of having their phones ring off the hook as the company is scaling back was not lost on Susan and her husband, who said the drought has definitely affected business.
Its feast or famine, she said. Roofing is expensive and its the last thing most people want to do, but in a sudden rainstorm, especially like the one we had, all these people needed plastic, and we had a lot of insurance companies calling us.
They werent alone.
Espinosa, the office manager for GreatWay for more than a decade, said shes been underwater with calls since the storm last month.
The company, which is booking house calls about two weeks out due to the high volume of requests, even hired extra workers for support.
Ive pretty much been by the phone, she said. People are panicking because they dont want water in their house, which is understandable.
However, she said, homeowners shouldnt get their leaky roofs fixed in haste.
Espinosa said most homeowners insurance companies will pay for tarps to protect houses from unwanted water damage.
We suggest they look into that so they can make a good decision and dont have to make a quick decision, the office manager said. If you get someone who is not necessarily qualified but can do the work (fast), you might have to go back and redo something. But if they take some temporary measures to cover the initial leak, they can take their time getting the right contractor.
Espinosa said people often put off fixing or replacing their roofs because it can be costly and you dont get to see it.
But keeping the roof maintained could save money down the road, she said, adding the expense is worth it.
Your roof is important. Its protecting everything.

Repair companies should be vetted thoroughly, say agents
JOSHUA VAIL
Tribune reporter
Tuesdays hailstorm did some damage in Chanute. Local insurance agents and others involved in the business of roof and vehicle repair talked about the extent of the damage and warned people to be careful about who they pay for the jobs.
Farmers Insurance Agent Mitch Love said there have definitely been a lot of calls about building and vehicle damage. It seems that the west side of town generally got hit a bit harder than the east side, but damage is scattered all over.
Weve filed quite a few claims, he said.
Love recommended that those who think their roofs have been damaged contact a local, licensed roofing contractor and have them look at the roof.
State Farm agent Ryan Disbrow said that business has been brisk.
Weve found that a large majority of our customers have fairly significant damage to their roofs, he said, and on the cars, weve had a lot of damage as well.
Disbrow said he knew the numbers were going to be pretty significant. He said his agency is already looking at 50-100 roofs and a couple hundred cars.
State Farm assessors are doing estimates for their customers and they are telling customers not to take their cars to someone they dont trust.
Disbrow has local contractors he will recommend. Insurance companies cannot steer customers to one contractor or another, but they do recommend that customers contact them if a roofer comes to their door wanting to do an estimate or repairs.
The biggest issue in these situations is a lack of communication, he said.
Chris Cleaver with Cleaver Farm & Home, which provides roofing and other exterior supplies, said it is still early to know the full extent of hail damage in Chanute and business has been slow so far on that front.
We havent really sold any roofs, he said.
Cleaver said they have sold some shingles to people, but in talking to local insurance agents he thinks it will be a good year to be in the shingle business.
Eighty-five percent of roofs might be a total loss, he said.
Cleaver said he hopes that hail is as bad a storm as Chanute gets this year, as fewer people are hurt by hail than by tornadoes.
Cleaver said that roofing contractors should be vetted carefully before any money is exchanged, and he would personally prefer to know a little about a contractor before allowing them to look at a roof or a house.
The state of Kansas has a roofing license through the Attorney Generals Office, he said. In order to legally shingle in the State of Kansas, you need to be licensed.
The web page at http://www.ag.ks.gov/in-your-corner-kansas/resources/roofing-registration/roofer-search is a searchable database of all licensed roofers in the state.
They can be searched by name, contact person, city and registration number. Information displayed includes the company name, registration number, contact person, city and state and whether they are in good standing.
After determining if they are licensed with the state, Cleaver recommends ensuring they have insurance and making sure they have a Chanute business license.
Do a little research on your own and make sure, before you spend your money, that you know what kind of work youre going to get, he said.

Spring temperatures bring with them spring rains. Unfortunately, they may also bring with them an increase in roofers trying to take advantage of homeowners.
"It was during the last monsoon season, after a big rainfall," recalls AndrewLeger, who learned that lesson firsthand.
"I had a contractor come by the house. He basically told me I had some damage in the house. I needed to get it looked at, repaired," said Leger.
But that contractor wasn't able to point out any specific damage. Instead, it seemed to Andrew, the contractor was trying to scare him into a job.
Andrew decided to do his homework, and called over a second company to look it over. They found there was no damage.
"So that kind of saved the problem right there, but it was close," he said.
"In some cases, they're shoddy companies. In other cases, they're opportunists. They realize the homeowner is desperate, they have a problem, they want it solved," said Eric Skoog, President ofSunvek Roofing.
He has spent a lot of his career cleaning up the messes of such roofing companies.
Skoog'sadvice is, if anyone comes to your door knocking, be wary.
"That's the first caution, why is this person finding it necessary to go door knocking to find work?"
Here are three things you should check before agreeing to work with any roofing company of contractor:
Make sure the company is listed with the Better Business Bureau Check the Arizona Registrar of Contractors (ROC) to make sure they have a license Check to make sure the company has a good record with the ROC

Elon Musk created a mini frenzy in the cleantech world when he announced roofing tiles with embedded solar panels, but India already had an innovator who figured out this solution and much more
Weve travelled incessantly across cities and rural India over the past few years gathering stories. One of the recurring questions that arise is about housing and, more specifically, roofing. The way urban slums are coming up and the way rural societies are developing, the industrial world has force-fed a solution that is neither eco-friendly, nor functional, and it does not have an ounce of beauty. Moving ahead from the mud houses with bamboo roofs and other natural materials (we can still very well use them), people are left with two options- expensive RCC or the mighty hot (in summers) and noisy (in monsoons) tin sheets. There are terracotta tiles in some parts but they are prone to breakages.
In Ahmedabad, our search for an answer brought us to Hasit Ganatra. A local lad who went to the University of South California to study engineering, Hasit has worked in the fields of rural solar electrification, electric vehicles and low-income housing. While figuring out an affordable housing solution in his last stint, he came across the dearth of proper roofing solutions.
My work in the rural solar electrification project took me to remote parts of the country and during my research around housing as well, I spoke with a lot of locals. And in numerous cases, roofing is the problem! People manage to get the walls together and up but roofing turns out to be the bottleneck
says Hasit from his research.
Concrete is just too expensive and tin sheets are a very poor alternative. I looked around for materials that can be picked off the shelf but found absolutely nothing. I told the firm supporting me to do housing that solving roofing can create a much larger effect, says Hasit. He started out by experimenting with materials in his backyard. There had to be a material that is hard, light, waterproof and cost-effective. The answer took time to come.
People called me crazy, they still do, Hasit told us at his factory shed in Vattva, the industrial area in Ahmedabad. His company, Re-materials, has rented out six sheds, where 35 people work tirelessly to manufacture a material that can be an answer to good quality, affordable roofing.
Trying out multiple thingspaper pulp, agriculture waste, plastic waste, etc. it took a good 14 months to arrive at a mix that gave the first iteration of the material they have currently. A lot of people in various capacities came in to help Hasit with his experiments. We rented a small press, got materials in very small quantities and tried out hundreds of combinations to arrive at a composition that worked for us, recollects Hasit. And from that stage, it took three months more to reach a point where that material was waterproof. For waterproofing, they used a mixture of synthetic resin and a couple of other things, but in the latest development, theyve managed to get rid of that as well and have a more eco-friendly layer that acts as a water-proofing material.
From the backyard to factory, it has taken a lot of hard work and persistence. Along the way, Hasit managed to get two investors onboard- Deepa and Gayatri Prahlad (family of well known professor Dr. C.K. Prahalad) and Arpit Vyas, an industrialist from Ahmedabad. And Re-materials ModRoof is now ready for production and scale up.
Over one billion people in slums and villages worldwide are not safe, secure, or proud of their homes because they lack adequate roofing.
And providing a solution for this challenge is ModRoofs mission.Work has already started. Weve made more than 70 installations in Ahmedabad, says Hasit. The product is ready and the word has started to spread. They already have inquiries from countries like Brazil, Mexico, Morocco and other developing nations. There is a clear need for such a product and were glad to have made something that answers the questions, says Hasit.
To make the company financially viable, there is still a long road ahead. The company has a pilot manufacturing facility and are looking to expand to implement 500 roofing projects a month to meet their expenses. That is how the world of manufacturing is. You need to hit some scale to make yourselves a force to be reckoned with. I want this invention to go the masses and not stay on the research desk, says Hasit.
As a founder, this is a great strength to have for a company that is so heavy on research and development. Most of Re-materials' manufacturing equipment is made in-house. From a pupling machine to a UV tester to an extruder machine, the team at Re-materials has taken up all challenges that have come their way. Give me six months and youll see a sprawling cutting-edge research centre. We are a product company but the core is the research in our work
says Hasit. We also saw samples of some other products including roofing tile which has a solar panel embedded (yes, before Elon Musk), modular wall system, furniture made from their material and more.
We went to a few installations and the families seem to be happy with what they have got. Re-materials has partnered with NGOs and a few micro-finance companies to get the installations going. People have come to them after seeing an installation and the word-of-mouth is also spreading in the communities. We have an all-women sales team. Once a family uses our roof, they become our evangelists and weve managed to get a wonderful set of women whore proud of spreading the work were doing, says Hasit.
But all this comes at its own price. For instance, during a site visit, one of the families had drilled holes in the tiles and installed a Tata Sky inspite of being asked not to. Re-materials already has this problem solved with the new material but to ensure a fool proof solution, they have a team which regularly visits the installations to take feedback. The research mindset was also not easy to get in. There will always be resistance at the beginning. But once the locals started to get the joy of experimenting and arriving at a solution, they now love the process, says Hasit.
Re-materials has done a phenomenal job at arriving at a product that fits the market as well as checking most of the eco-friendly boxes. We are clear in our mission of providing affordable roofing. Being eco-friendly just happened naturally and were glad, he adds. Now, the company is devoting all energy to scaling up operations and moving to a single larger integrated facility from where they can start delivering on the welcome pile of orders.
Checkout Re-material's website and feel free to write in to us at slowtech@yourstory.com if you want an introduction to Hasit or have something to share related to this story.

SAN ANTONIO - A huge relief came through Monday for a family on the Northeast Side.
Since last weeks tornadoes, two insurance companies report damage claims have doubled to more than 2,000 across South Texas.
Monday afternoon was a life-changing surprise for Kevin Tran and his family.
How can I afford to fix everything, explains Tran.
The recent storm left him without a roof and lots of debris to clean up.
When I opened my door I see the whole tree just fell over," says the homeowner.
It left his family with nearly $10,000 worth of damage to pay for.
It literally looked like somebody put their hands on top of it and yanked part of their roof, says Tony Lozano with American Homes Roofing.
Tran says he didnt have insurance because his policy got canceled without him being aware.
As a result, Tran wasnt not sure who to turn to until help arrived.
We just felt the need that we needed to intervene, says Lozano.
American Homes Roofing will cover the expense of Trans home at full cost.
Due to Tran's situation, American Homes Roofing decided to provide the family with a free roof.
This was a friend of my bosses, adds Lozano.
San Antonios Red Wolves ABA Basketball Team (local men's semi-professional team) also decided to assist the roofing company with the repairs.
"It means a lot, says Harold Crow, a player.
Its a joint effort making a difference in someones life.

LONDON, Feb. 27, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Industry Study with Forecasts for 2020 & 2025

The commercial roofing market has experienced a period of evolution, as bituminous roofing materials, which once dominated demand, now face strong competition from self-adhesive plastic and elastomeric roofing membranes that offer comparable performance properties and are easier to install. Plastic roofing materials will see the fastest demand gains going forward, spurring the interest of contractors in such products as TPO membranes with peel-and-stick backings.
This study will answer the following questions: - How will bituminous roofing materials remain competitive with plastic and elastomeric membranes? - Which market segments will see the most rapid growth? - What role do environmental considerations play in supporting commercial roofing demand?
Description
Plastic roofing overtakes bituminous roofing Plastic roofing is now the leading commercial roofing material installed in the US, and will post above-average gains in demand through 2020. Demand for plastic roofing will be supported by its ease of installation, favorable performance properties, and suitability for use as cool roofing. Concerns about the shortage of trained installers will cause contractors to continue to expand the use of products with peel-and-stick backings, especially plastic (TPO) and elastomeric products.
Cool roofing gains attention Cool roofing will play a key role in the selection of roofing materials, particularly in the South and West, where summers are longer and hotter. White- and light-colored membranes and metal products will benefit. Building professionals will continue to look at the roof as part of the building envelope and see it is a key element in reducing energy use. In addition to cool roofing, roofing with attached insulation or waterproofing membranes will exhibit solid gains.
Bituminous membranes to face strong competition Bituminous membranes, which have seen their share of the US commercial roofing market drop in the face of strong competition from single-ply roofing, will continue to experience falling demand through 2020. Declines in the number of built-up roofing (BUR) systems installed on newly erected buildings will affect demand. The reroof segment will continue to support bituminous roofing demand, as there is a large stock of structures with installed BUR systems. As these roofing products become damaged or worn, roofing professionals will generally opt for such products as self-adhering polymer-modified bituminous membranes as a replacement material.
Steep-slope roofing products to exhibit good growth Demand for steep-slope roofing materials used in commercial applications is forecast to advance at a more rapid pace than that for low-slope roofing through 2020. Use of these roofing products -- primarily asphalt shingles and metal shingles and tiles -- will be driven by rising office, retail, and lodging construction spending. Many low-rise structures in this market segment incorporate residential features to create more aesthetically pleasing exteriors.
Study coverage Commercial Roofing presents historical demand data (2005, 2010 and 2015) plus forecasts (2020 and 2025) by roofing material (plastic, elastomeric, bituminous membrane), product (low-slope, steep-slope), market (new, reroofing, building type) and US region. In addition, the study assesses key market environment factors, examines the industry structure and analyzes company market share.

A woman waited months for a refund after home repairs left her with a leaky ceiling.
Yvonne Williams is renovating her home in Washington, D.C., and the first job was repairing her roof and siding. She paid a major retailer $5,021.01 to do the work but was unaware the retailer hired a third-party contractor to actually do the job.
The job the contractor did was shoddy, Williams said.
The gutter was extremely slanted, she said.
Also, The siding, while it looks good, there's something wrong with it, and they were like no, no, no, she said.
She noticed water leaking into her ceiling.
So I hired a home inspector to come look, she said.
The certified inspector confirmed what Williams suspected, finding "poor coverage," "roof surface poorly protected" and "cracking."
The inspector recommended hiring a reliable contractor to provide the proper application.
I then contacted the company to say what I found out from the home inspector, and when they did call me back, they said, Well, we need to send our own representative, Williams said.
They did and determined the work wasn't done correctly and offered Williams a full refund in August.
But months went by without a refund.
Never heard back, so I called again, and I'm like, you sent your people, I need to know what's going on. I need my money back, she said.
Not long after NBC4 Responds contacted the company, Williams received a release and settlement agreement. By signing it she agreed not to name the company and got her full refund.
If you hire a large retailer to perform renovations, ask if they use third-party contractors, and if they do, find out who it is, check their reviews and make sure they're licensed.

?NRP believes in the strength of men and women working together for success," stated Dale Tyler, president of NRP. ?Heidi J. Ellsworth, Chair of NWIR and Mallory Payne are both integral to NRP. It is the future of this industry."
?NWIR was incorporated in February of 2016 and has seen extreme growth the past year. Our Founding Sponsors have been essential to our success," stated Heidi J. Ellsworth, Chair of NWIR. ?As an association, we are committed to empowering women within the roofing industry through mentoring events like we will experience at IRE this year.
