Local roofing company fixes roof of disabled veteran for free – WCTV - March 17, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

By: Erika Fernandez March 16, 2017

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- A local roofing company received recognition Thursday for a good deed. Capital City Roofing and Sheet Metal Association fixed the roof of a local veteran all for free.

Retired and on disability, local veteran, Joyce McMillian reached out for help when her living situation became unbearable. The weather and time of 24 years had done enough damage to her home.

When McMillain was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, they didnt know how they would afford to fix their home. But then, there was a saving grace.

"Sigh of relief that it's an added expenditure that we don't have to brave or try to scamp and scrape to have done or have fixed," McMillian said.

Rusty McKeithen and his company stepped up to help local veterans. They completed the $7,000 job all for free.

"Weve done it for low income people, that needed a roof and didn't have the money in the past, and we've decided to do, not only that, but to do it for the veterans, too," said McKeithen of Capital City Roofing and Sheet Metal Association.

They received donated materials from Gulf Coast Supply and manufacturing and proved you can never go wrong with doing the right thing.

"Our company is filled with veterans from different eras and so we were definitely happy to donate when Rusty contacted our company," said Jon Jackson of Gulf Coast Supply and Manufacturing.

The roofing company does these projects twice a year. This one took them only one day to complete.

Malarkey Roofing withdraws from pension in new contract – Nwlaborpress - March 17, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Mar 15, 2017 Collective Bargaining

Members of United Steelworkers (USW)Local 330 voted 54-41 March 9 to accept a last best and final offer from Malarkey Roofing Products. Voting to reject the contract offer would have meant authorizing a strike by the 115 workers at the companys North Columbia Boulevard roof tile factory in Portland.

The vote came after the company backed off several union-busting proposals. Malarkey, represented by employer consultant Jim Frazer, had proposed to halt employer collection of union dues, end the requirement that represented employees become union members, and eliminate just cause discipline.

Under the new agreement, Malarkey will stop making pension contributions and pay $6.5 million to withdraw from the union-sponsored multi-employer pension plan. The $1.7 billion pension plan, known as PIUMPF (PACE Industry Union-Management Pension Fund), has more than twice as many retirees as active members, and its projected to become insolvent in less than 20 years. USW inherited the pension when it absorbed the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers (PACE) union in a 2005 merger.

Malarkey has been contributing $1.38 an hour to the pension plus a rehabilitation surcharge.

In place of the defined benefit pension, Malarkey will enroll union members in the company-sponsored 401(k), matching employee contributions dollar for dollar for the first 2 percent of salary, and 50 cents on the dollar after that up to 10 percent.

The contract runs through April 2019. It provides annual wage increases of 1.5 percent, retroactive to the June 1, 2016, expiration of the previous union contract. Wages at the roof tile plant currently range from $16.50 to $25.96 an hour.

Paralyzed army veteran goes the distance for healing, gets life changing gift – ABC Action News - March 17, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

LAKELAND Fla. - A Lakeland U.S. Army veteran who suffered a traumatic brain injury 15 years after his service, is getting a life changing gift from strangers.

Adam Allen, was left paralyzed on his right side in 2003 after he was attacked with a hammer while on a job site.

After the attack, Allen learned to talk, walk and move all over again, "they thought I was going to die," he said.

Visible scars on the top of his head are a reminder of the pain he endured since the attack.

"They cut both sides, I guess."

In 2010, Allen became a part of the adaptive sports program at the James A. Haley VA hospital where he became part of the Paralyzed Veterans of America race team.

He now competes on the cycling team with the VIP Warriors in Central Florida.

"It takes me about ten miles to get warmed up," he said.

After years of giving back by helping other veterans, Allen was selected to be the recipient of something that he's long needed, a new roof.

Allen walks inside his home where water stains take over the ceiling, the garage roof is rotting and the shingles have blown away.

The VA chose Allen as a perfect candidate for an outreach project with Black Daggers Military Hunt Club.

On Saturday, March 18, two roofing associations will volunteer their time and supplies to give Allen a new roof.

Tri-County Roofing Contractors Association and West Coast Roofing Contractors Association will give the $10,000 roof free of charge.

The donation will allow Allen to focus on the road that's ahead of him.

Roofing crews working overtime in the cold – ABC 12 News (press release) - March 14, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

FLINT, Mich. (WJRT) - (03/14/17) - Nearly a week later, you can still hear the wind. And now, repair crews are dealing with snow and freezing temperatures as they work to fix roofs across multiple counties.

"It was definitely challenging, but you just have to work your way through it," said Lockhart Roofing Project Manager Dan Sowden.

The company has already handled over 350 calls for estimates since Wednesday's storm from homes to businesses.

"Roofing missing, trees falling knocking into the corner of the house, taking out part of the house, you know, siding blown off," he explained.

Sowden tells ABC12 News many homes are simply lost shingles. But, he says missing shingles could lead to melting snow dripping through or other future damage.

So, in gloves and a number of layers, crews have been laying tarps on the roofs to protect the homes.

"The crews in the field are up from sun up to sun down," Sowden said. "Thursday and Friday and Saturday actually, they were out actually preparing for this snow, trying to get as many roofs done as possible with tripod lights 'til 10-11 o' clock at night tarping roofs."

He says most of the staff worked straight through the weekend.

"I've been here over ten years and this is by far the busiest it's ever been for sure," Sowden added.

And it may be several more weeks before their work is done.

But, Sowden says they're expecting to finally get a break on Sunday, as things slow down this weekend.

If you need their help, Sowden says they've been able to get out to homes in about a day. For more information, check them out at http://www.lockhartroofing.com/
