Zucca Roofing cleans up mess at single mom’s house after different company left job unfinished – fox4kc.com - June 6, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

CLINTON, Mo. -- Heather Shinn's home in Clinton, Mo. had turned into a full-blown construction site. That's why she was smiling.

"That's absolutely wonderful," Shinn said as she watched four men hard at work re-roofing the the modest home she shares with her young daughter.

The first time FOX 4 Problem Solvers met Shinn half her roof was missing. The roofer she had hired, Travis Hurd, had taken nearly all her money but disappeared after dropping off materials and tearing off some shingles.

"I don't have any more money to pay someone else to do it now," Shinn told Problem Solvers.

That's why FOX 4 Problem Solvers called Wyatt Zucca of Zucca & Daughters & Sons Roofing of Blue Springs. Problem Solvers knew Zucca had a big heart and a solid reputation. All we had to do was explain Heather Shinn's predicament and Zucca was on board.

"You called and you had a need and you had a lady who had been taken advantage of, so we wanted to step up and help," Zucca said.

It was an offer of help so generous that Shinn, who works full-time and goes to school, never expected.

"I didn't think that someone would want to step up and do the rest of it for free," she said.

Zucca rearranged his schedule to re-roof the house just a few days after we called, realizing that Shinn's roof was so bad that she was seeing damage inside her home every time it rained.

Shinn's dad Bill Shinn was on hand to welcome Zucca and his crew.

"After the last several weeks I had kind of given up hope on finding some good people out there, but you managed to do it," Bill Shinn said.

By the end of a very long day, Heather Shinn's home had a new roof and she had renewed confidence that not all contractors are just after your money; some actually care about your home. You just have to find the right one.

There was more good news at the Olathe home of Joe and Stacey Brashears. After a FOX 4 Problem Solvers' story about how the Brashears had paid a company to install a new fence but never got one, we received several offers of help.

Good guys John Fulkers and Andrew Bush offered to complete the job for free.

They were concerned that Joe Brashears, who is fighting cancer, was now going to have to put up the fence by himself. Fulkers and Bush don't own a fencing company, but both men said they've built fences before and aren't afraid of hard work.

"I don't even have words other than to say 'thank you,'" said Stacey Brashears.

The pitch is the angle at which the roof raises from its lowest to highest point and that points roofing rising or falling depend upon the pitched point. So the pitch is partly dependent upon stylistic factors, and partially to do with practicalities and other hand its depend upon your need. Some types of roofing, for example thatch, require a steep pitch in order to be waterproof and durable that kind of pitch protect your home building from water in the shape of rain. Other types of roofing, for example panties, are unstable on a steeply pitched roof but provide excellent weather protection at a relatively low angle that kind of pitch protect your home from wind and snowfall. Surge in roofing boosts construction

Shortly after midnight Saturday, April 15, a storm pelted Plainview with golfball- to softball-sized hail, damaging many roofs that had been repaired months earlier following a 2015 storm.

Now that insurance adjusters have completed their work, the roofing crews are busy making repairs. That strong level of activity is reflected in the City of Plainviews report on construction activity during May 2017.

That report, issued Thursday, shows 94 permits for roofing projects issued during May for a combined value of $1,562,306.55. That activity accounts for the lions share of the 108 building permits issued during May, as well as the months total $1,627,326.55 construction value.

For the calendar year-to-date, construction stands at $2,595,889.44 for 201 projects. Thats triple the 2016 total for the same period of $831,952 for 100 projects. As expected, roofing activity accounts for most of the 2017 year-to-date tally with 146 projects for a total of $2,127,140.53.

The City of Plainview began requiring building permits for roofing in January. As a result, no comparison figures on roofing from 2016 and previous years are available.

Other than roofing, the city issued 14 permits for construction in May. Those projects, and corresponding value, include: five residential additions, $7,150; two residential remodels, $24,205; two garage/carports, $2,050; one commercial addition, $700; one commercial demolition, $23,000; and three signs, $7,915.

For the year-to-date, building permits have been issued for 12 residential additions, $47,250; nine residential remodels, $29,183.51; 10 garage/carports, $13,350; two storage buildings, $5,500; one new commercial, $21,000; two commercial additions, $169,988; five commercial remodels, $44,600; one commercial repair, $20,000; three commercial demolition, $23,000; 10 signs, $94,877.40; and 146 roofing, $2,127,140.53.

Three certificates of occupancy were issued during May, to Milagros Boutique, 1710 W. 13th; V-Twin Service, 801 S. Columbia; and FedEx, 1501 N. I-27.

    Non-roofing construction projects include: Alvaro Monarrez, 1507 W. 11th, commercial addition-awning; Rogelio Acosta, 1122 W. 31st, residential addition-porch; Clearview Home Exteriors 2413 Kermit, residential remodel-windows; The Desert Inn, 111 W. Martin Morales Co-owner, 1st Choice Roofing & Construction

How often should a homeowner have a roof checked? Its recommended to have someone take a look at your roof every year to every two years, and the reason being is because sometimes you have trees around the house, or a branch may have fallen on the home and caused some damage. A lot of times if weve had storms come throughand they dont have to be a significant stormbut there might be something caused from high winds so something was projected toward the roof. A homeowner may not know that because they dont get up on their roof and [by] looking at your roof from the ground, you cant see whats going on with the roof. In a years time, a lot can happen.

What are some common causes of roof leaks? Any type of abnormal penetrations in the roof, whether it be from tree branches or from anything that could have hit the roof, including possible storm damage. Some of the nails of the roofing accessories, they are going to be exposed and theyre supposed to have sealant on them. [But] the sealant could be wearing away and the nail head becomes exposed. [Then] they start to rust and back out of their seat, and water can penetrate a nail hole. Its a very common cause and can cause structural damage to the decking and possibly into a rafter or into the Sheetrock or interiors and insulation. We even look at the gutters. Are they clean or full? Because if youre not getting proper drainage, water can back up.

Is there a certain time of year to have a roof inspected? The way we look at it is as long as you have your roof inspected on an annual or biannual basis, it doesnt matter when you want to have your roof looked at. You want to have your roof looked at to see if it is as watertight as possible. We could get a storm in April [or] we could get a storm getting toward storm season, but right after winter and spring, thats a good time, especially in March and April. Thats when were going into storm season, and then you can get prepared for the rest of the year.

What do roof inspectors look for?

Forward Labs emerges to challenge Tesla in solar roofing … – Construction Dive - May 31, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Dive Brief:

Forward Labs, a Palo Alto, CAbased startup, debuted a building-integrated solar roof that could challenge Tesla in the category, Curbed reported. The company said its roofing will cost two-thirds that of Tesla while delivering twice the energy generation capacity of similar products.

Like Teslas, Forward Labs roof is designed to blend in, according to Treehugger, in this case replicating a standing-seam metal roof. The roof features layers of glass, photovoltaic cells and a chromatic coating in the owners color of choice.

The roofing can be pre-ordered and will be introduced in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2018. It will cost approximately $3.25 per watt.

Teslas highly anticipated solar roofing, which opened to pre-orders in early May, features solar-collecting tiles in two initial styles (black smooth glass and textured glass) and two more styles (French and Tuscan slate) to come. The company puts the price around $21.85 per square foot and says its tempered glass tiles are three times stronger than standard roofing tiles.

New York Citybased integrator Cloud9 Smart Home investigated the potential ROI of the Tesla product and found that the companys numbers indicate the product to be a smart investment, but without real-life proof of concept, early adopters will have to take on the risk of finding out.

Consumer Reports analyzed houses in three U.S. regions based on Teslas online ROI calculator for its new roofing product. The publication found that savings are possible for some of the homes, but that those savings likely wouldnt be realized in the 13 years a typical homeowner stays in their house. Meanwhile, one analyst questioned Teslas assessment that the companys solar roofing will save money, saying the calculator ignores several details in setting cost, including the different projected lifetimes for the roof and its companion power storage battery.

Still, Teslas and Forward Labs offerings come at a time of tremendous buzz for rooftop solar in the residential space. Googles Project Sunroof estimated that roughly four in five homes in the U.S. could generate enough energy from rooftop solar panels to justify the investment. In a recent survey of real estate agents and brokers by the National Association of Realtors, 80% of respondents said PVs are offered in their region and 42% said that perceived property values are higher for homes with solar panels.

Many U.S. builders offer solar panels. For example, the southwest Florida master-planned community of Babcock Ranch will include a 443-acre, on-site solar array that will power the MPC. And last week,Fremont, CA,announced a mandatefor new homes to include solar panels.

Tesla’s not the only one installing solar roofs — another startup … – ZME Science - May 31, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

Forward Labs solar roof looks like a metal roof. Credit: Forward Labs.

Earlier this month, Tesla started taking the first $1,000 deposits for its much heralded solar roofs sleek and fashionable roof tiles that double as solar panels. The marketing was so good that Tesla is already sold out on solar roof tiles until well into 2018, according to Electrek. But Tesla isnt the only company in this business. A newcomer called Forward Labspromises to deliver much of the same energy output at Tesla at almost half the cost and installation time.

While Teslas roof will set you back about $22/square foot ($220/square meter), a Forward Labs roof comes in at less than $12 per square foot ($120 / square meter) for the sections that include PV ($3.25 per watt) and $8.50 per square foot of the non-PV areas. These were designed by a team led by Zach Taylor, who comes from a constructions background particularlyon the composition and installation of roofing systems. According to Taylor, his company designed solar roofs to be as inexpensive as possible by using standard construction materials which are easy to install and replace.

    Credit: Forward.

Whereas Teslas solar roof is made from individual shingles, Forward Labs metal roof is made up of one large, layered piece which itself consists of five layers:

The top layer made of tempered glass which protects the whole system from the elements snow, hail, etc.

Optical chromatic cloaking gives the roof its visible colorwhile absorbing very little usable light.

Monocrystalline solar cells cheap and readily available.

Rollformed galvanized metal panelswhich serve as the base of the roof.

The racking system which like Teslas roof is concealed.

Right now, 8 colors are available but given the chromatic layer, any color is technically possible. Installation takes only a couple of days or half as much as Tesla, according to Taylor.

Aesthetically, it doesnt look like much it resembles a typical metal roof. But that can be a good thing if youre looking topass a Home Owners Associations muster. Its also worth knowing the entire roof benefits from the 30 percent federal Investment Tax Credit.

    Credit: Forward Labs.

Although the entire roof doesnt produce power, its treated as part of the system, just as mounting is part of a standard solar array and included as part of the 30 percent credit. Tesla has led on this interpretation, and were planning on being under the same final definition, Taylor, the companys CEO, told GreenTechMedia.

But were more focused on what consumers want, and were finding that consumers are very interested in solar roofing, whether or not the construction industry is open to that, he said. Were looking at a 7- to 8-year return on investment and faster installation time 2 to 3 days rather than 5 to 7 days and, in my opinion, and a better looking roof.

Im trying not to make too many comparisons directly to Tesla, Taylor added. But I can say that we do have the most cost-effective roof in the market with the highest rate of return on investment and thats what homeowners have been seeking.

Those are some very bold claims. It remains to be seen if Taylor and colleagues are worth the hype after all, Tesla is also very bombastic with pre-product claims but nearly always delivers, and plenty more.

The firm has started taking preorders for its solar roofing system for installation in the San Francisco Bay Area. Taylor says the first preorders will be installed this year even though he told customers its on for 2018. Wed like to underpromise and overdeliver, he said.
