It was the mystery of the missing roof.

On Friday, St. Louis resident Laura McInnis discovered that nearly half the shingles on her perfectly good roof were missing. A haphazardly secured tarp covered the damage. A pile of tiles were strewn on her property, with some beer bottles mixed in.

I had no idea what happened, she said.

McInnis had just moved to Michigan with her husband, Chris McInnis. The couple were set to close the sale of their house in the 5600 block of Rosa Avenue in the Princeton Heights neighborhood.

But on Friday, Laura McInnis was contacted by a watchful neighbor.

The tarp your roofers put on yesterday is starting to blow up and back, her neighbor texted her.

What roofers? McInnis said.

She and her husband soon concluded that a crew started work on the wrong house their house then realized their mistake and bolted, she said.

The couple posted in neighborhood Facebook groups asking if anyone had spotted roofers in the area. One neighbor said she thought the roofers drove a blue van and were in the neighborhood Thursday morning.

An insurance agent, a neighborhood leader and a handyman from the area all came out unprompted to help scan the area for the van, said Matt McInnis, Laura McInnis brother-in-law.

They were all really into it, Matt McInnis said. Like the whole neighborhood was talking about it. They were all angry and wanted to find these people.

Eventually the family found a neighbor with a surveillance camera that caught an image of a blue work van rounding the corner, Laura McInnis said.

She posted the photo on Facebook on Friday evening and about 24 hours later got the big lead in her case. A neighbor had spotted the van working on Itaska Street, about a third of a mile away from her missing roof.

Matt McInnis went to the street and was searching for the right house when he spotted a U.S. Postal Service worker.

I thought: The mailman always knows all, Matt McInnis said. And he did.

The postal worker said he spotted the van himself and pointed to the right house, Matt McInnis said. The McInnis family was eventually able to identify the homeowners and track down the roofing company.

They were shocked and very apologetic, Laura McInnis said.

McInnis declined to give the companys name because she believes they have now done the right thing, she said. The company completely replaced the roof Monday.

"It looks great now from the photos," McInnis said. "And they got it done in one day, so that was really nice."

McInnis and her husband officially closed the sale on the house Tuesday.

Im finally able to breathe, Laura McInnis said. A lot of people came together to help us. To me, it just proves the idea of community. It shows neighbors really do want to help each other.

ST. LOUIS - An apparent roofing mistake has come at the worst possible time for Chris and Laura McInnis. The south St. Louis couple is in the process of selling their home on Rosa Ave. Theyve already moved out of town and were shocked when neighbors messaged them with news that roofers ripped up their shingles and covered the gaps with a blue tarp.

Someone had come to our house, by mistake we think and started tearing down our roof for about an hour and quickly realized they had the wrong house and booked it out of there leaving a huge pile of trash next to hour house, said Laura McInnis.

Neighbors sent the couple photos of the piles of trash roofers left behind. One neighbor was able to grab an image of a blue van neighbors say the workers were using. The image was shared with police and neighbors are trying to identify the roofers. They have a few leads but no resolution.

Things happen. The wrong roof gets worked on but we expect the people responsible, whether its the people who did this or the people who employed them to do it, to make it right, said Chris McInnis.

The mess is especially difficult for the couple to resolve because they are miles from the home and have just days before the new homeowner will close on the deal.

That makes us responsible for the damage because we are still technically the owners of the house even though weve moved out of it, said Laura McInnis.

The couple praised neighbors and family members for their support and hope the roofers will be identified and will make good on their mistake.

Domestic roof construction is the framing and roof covering which is found on most suburban detached houses in cold and temperate climates. Such roofs are mostly built with timber, take a number of different shapes, and are covered with a variety of materials.

Modern timber roofs are mostly framed with pairs of common rafters or prefabricated wooden trusses fastened together with truss connector plates. Timber framed and historic buildings may be framed with principal rafters or timber roof trusses. Roofs are also designated as warm or cold roof depending on how they are designed and built with regard to thermal building insulation and ventilation. The steepness or roof pitch of a sloped roof is determined primarily by the roof covering material and aesthetic design. Flat roofs actually slope up to approximately ten degrees to shed water. Flat roofs on houses are primarily found in arid regions.[1]

In high wind areas, such as where a cyclone or hurricane may make landfall, the main engineering consideration is to hold the roof down during severe storms. Every component of the roof, as of course the rest of the structure, has to withstand the uplift forces of high wind speeds. This is accomplished by using metal ties fastened to each rafter or truss. This is not normally a problem in areas not prone to high wind.

In the UK, a concrete tiled roof would normally have rafters at 600mm centers, roof battens at 300mm centers and ceiling joists at 400mm centers. The United States still uses imperial units of measurement and framing members are typically spaced sixteen or twenty-four inches apart.

The roof framing may be interrupted for openings such as a chimney or skylight. Chimneys are typically built with a water diverter known as a cricket or saddle above the chimney. Flashing is used to seal the gap between the chimney and roofing material.

A simple rafter roof consists of rafters that the rafter foot rest on horizontal wall plates on top of each wall.[2] The top ends of the rafters often meet at a ridge beam, but may butt directly to another rafter to form a pair of rafters called a couple. Depending on the roof covering material, either horizontal laths, battens, or purlins are fixed to the rafters; or boards, plywood, or oriented strand board form the roof deck (also called the sheeting or sheathing) to support the roof covering. Heavier under purlins or purlin plates are used to support longer rafter spans. Tie beams, which may also serve as ceiling joists, are typically connected between the lower ends of opposite rafters to prevent them from spreading and forcing the walls apart. Collar beams or collar ties may be fixed higher up between opposite rafters for extra strength. The rafters, tie beams and plates serve to transmit the weight of the roof to the walls of the building

Pre-manufactured roof trusses come in a wide variety of styles. They are designed by the manufacturer for each specific building.

Timber trusses also are built in a variety of styles using wood or metal joints. Heavy timber rafters typically spaced 8 feet (2.4m) to 12 feet (3.7m) apart are called principal rafters. Principal rafters may be mixed with common rafters or carry common purlins.[citation needed]

Roof framing must be designed to hold up a structural load including what is called dead load, its own weight and the weight of the roof covering, and additional loading called the environmental load such as snow and wind. Flat roofs may also need to be designed for live loads if people can walk on them. In the United States, building codes specify the loads in pounds per square foot which vary by region. The load and span (distance between supports) defines the size and spacing of the rafters and trusses.[3]

The roofing material is primarily designed to shed water. The covering is also a major element of the architecture so roofing materials come in a wide variety of colors and textures. The primary roof covering on houses in North America are asphalt shingles, but some have other types of roof shingles or metal roofs.[4]Tile and thatch roofs are more common in Europe than North America. Some roofing materials help reduce air conditioning costs in hot climates by being designed to reflect light.

Ventilation of the roof deck speeds the evaporation of water from leakage or condensation and removes heat which helps prevent ice dams and helps asphalt shingles last longer. Building codes in the U.S. specify ventilation rates as a minimum of 1 sq. ft. of opening per 150 sq. ft. (1:150) with a ratio of 1:300 in some conditions.[5] Warm air rises so ceiling insulation is designed to have a higher r-value and the insulation is often installed between the ceiling joists or rafters. A properly insulated and ventilated roof is called a cold roof. A warm roof is a roof that is not ventilated,[6] where the insulation is placed in line with the roof pitch.[7] A hot roof is a roof designed not to have any ventilation and has enough air-impermeable insulation in contact with the sheathing to prevent condensation[8] such as when spray foam insulation is applied directly to the under-side or top-side of the roof deck or in some cathedral ceilings.[9]

A more recent design is the installation of a roof deck with foil-backed foam along with a second deck that is air-gapped away from the foil-backed foam to allow air to flow vertically to a ventalation outlet at the peak of the roofit is a double deck design with an air gap. This design improves efficiency.[10]

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Following an 11 Call for Action investigation by anchor Betty Sexton, the owners of Quality Roofing in Colorado Springs were arrested. On Thursday, the owners were in court, where they were formally told the charges they face.

11 News announced the arrest last week of Josh Noel and Christina Noel, both 42 years old. In court on Thursday, the judge said they each face one count of felony six theft, which amounts to a theft value between $2,000 and $5,000.

Victims previously reported to 11 News that they had entered contracts with Quality Roofing, and in many cases the work was never completed or even started.

Police say that since the arrest, additional victims have come forward alleging demands for money with the threat of property liens with the refusal to comply. These additional cases are still being investigated.

WESLACO - A local roofer explained how he takes extra strides to make sure heand his team stayhealthy while working during the extreme heat.

The sun feels like it's hotter than ever, at least that's what Harlingen roofer David Ramirez said.

He's been working for Above Quality Roofing for six years. On hot days, like Thursday, he still climbs ladders and walks on hot roofs to provide for his family.

He said to stay hydrated he brings water, Gatorade, Powerade, sodas and Monsters to work.

He said he's the leader of his roofing team and oversees five other roofers. He knows it's his responsibility to make sure every member of his team makes it home safely every evening.

"I do pay extra attention to the guys. I tell them to get off the roof if they don't feel well, even if it's not time for a break," Ramirez said.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS spoke to a local EMT who offered safety tips for Ramirez and his crew members.

Aaron Alva is a Weslaco firefighter and EMT. He said heat-related illnesses, like heat stroke, can become a problem for people working outside on hot days. He explained paying attention to key warning signs is vital to staying healthy in this heat.

"Big indicators are feeling weak, feeling lightheaded, feeling like you're sweating too much Those are all indicators of, Hey let me take a break. Let me get a sip of water or let me sit in the shade or the AC," Alva said.

Ramirez said he will continue to watch his team extra closely. He will also be making extra strides to keep them hydrated.

He said he isn't afraid to send his team home early if it becomes too hot.
