Caught on camera: firm fined after worker snapped standing on roof with no safety equipment

6:00am Saturday 26th April 2014 in News By Miranda Newey, Crime reporter

A ROOFING firm has been fined after a worker was photographed standing on a slanted rood with no safety measures in place.

Tyldesley based firm IQ Roofing Solutions was prosecuted after a member of the public snapped the worker on the roof.

A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector visited in the site the same day on June 6 last year and issued a prohibition notice, ordering the staff to come down until scaffolding or other safety measures had been introduced.

Boss Stuart Bell, managing director of the firm, had been at the site earlier that day and knew work would be carried out without scaffolding, a court heard.

The firm, of Nelson Street in Tyldesley, had previously been served with a prohibition notice in 2011 following unsafe working practices.

Trafford Magistrates Court heard the IQ Roofing Solutions was unable to provide proof that it held employers liability insurance a legal requirement which allows workers to claim compensation if they are injured at work.

The business pleaded guilty to two breaches of work at height regulations and to a breach of the employers liability act.

The company was fined 3,000 and ordered to pay 2,000 court costs.

Roofing firm fined after jet-wash worker snapped on roof - April 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Health and safety officials were alerted after a shocked passer-by took this picture of a man balanced on the roof

A roofing firm has been fined thousands after they allowed a man to jet wash a steeply-sloping house roof without any safety measures in place.

The prosecution came after a concerned member of the public snapped the picture showing a man standing halfway down the sloping roof using a jet washer to clear moss and debris.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) were alerted to the dangerous work and an inspector visited the house later the same day.

The organisation immediately banned workers from IQ Roofing Solutions from carrying out further work at the site in Tyldesley, Wigan until scaffolding had been put in place.

Trafford magistrates court heard that the firms managing director Stuart Bell had visited the site on the morning the picture was taken and knew scaffolding was not in place.

The company also failed to provide proof of Employers Liability Insurance a requirement under UK law which allows workers to claim compensation if they suffer a workplace injury.

The court heard that the company had previously been served with a Prohibition Notice in 2011 relating to unsafe roof work.

IQ Roofing Solutions pleaded guilty to two breaches of the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and one breach of the Employers Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act 1969.

The company, of Nelson Street in Tyldesley, was fined 3,000 and ordered to pay 2,000 prosecution costs.

Commercial Roofing Contractor KPOST Company's New Blog Provides Insights on Trucking Regulations - April 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) April 25, 2014

KPOST Company posted today a new blog about trucking regulations imposed by The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration that will affect multiple industries in many ways. In Commercial Roofing Costs are on the Rise, KPOST details how these new trucking regulations are expected to affect any industry utilizing trucking as a method of transportation, including roofing.

The federal government, in its divine wisdom, implemented a safety program for trucking that called for a weekly cut of 15 hours of drive time, said Steve Little, KPOST Company president in a recent KPOST Company blog post. Couple that with the 15% decline in available truckers, and we have 30% less availability of trucking. That hurts everyone.

According to Little, these regulatory changes will take up critical time and slow down the delivery process for the receiving and shipping of materials. This slows down a vendors ability to react quickly to customers and ultimately it, negatively impacts the bottom line.

Some product manufacturers have already begun reacting to the change. In attempts to shorten the distance for deliveries many manufacturers are building regional distribution facilities in hopes of saving money and time.

Obviously having to build new facilities costs money, and that will be passed on to the consumer. While these regional facilities may make up some of the time delay, this solution will not alleviate cost increases, said Little.

Although cost is a major aspect that will be impacted by regulatory changes, there are also major changes expected in the ways in which construction companies conduct business. More expectations and insights on the affects of trucking regulation changes from KPOST Company are available via the Latest News section of their company website.
