KUCHING: It is unlikely for Kuching City South Council (MBKS) to compensate the hawkers affected by the re-roofing of the Kenyalang Food Centre.

A statement issued by the council here yesterday said it is improper for MBKS to compensate the hawkers of Kenyalang Food Centre as the council already provides the hawkers with a place for business and trading at very minimal fees with improved facilities.

MBKS also said it was a huge disappointment when hawkers resorted to asking for compensation through politicians.

MBKS adheres to its principle of putting the interest of the people above all. We understand that the leaking roof has affected their businesses. We are now improving the condition there. Does MBKS deserve to be blamed?

If our politicians truly mean to help the people, they should ask the hawkers to work with the council instead of distorting the logic by asking hawkers to demand for compensation from the local council as a compensation for the loss of business, said the MBKS statement.

Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong of DAP had last Thursday met up with the hawkers. She was quoted in the media to have suggested to MBKS to at least emulate Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) to provide assistance to the affected hawkers.

She explained that DBKU had in the past compensated RM500 to every hawker at the Open Air Market when the stalls were closed for renovation.

The Kenyalang Food Centre is now closed for upgrading works on the roof, and is expected to re-open on July 20.

MBKS added it was disheartened by Yong who claimed to represent the hawkers to request for compensation to cover the two-week stoppage period to enable re-roofing of the Kenyalang Food Centre.

The Managing Director, Plusworld Roofing Limited, Mr. John Igbaifua, has said that roofs can be restored as they age, rather than being pulled down.

Igbaifua, who spoke at a seminar to sensitise and train people on roof restoration, said no matter how bad a roof got, it could be repaired and made new.

He said there was the need for proper handling of roofing and maintenance in the country, as this could also create jobs.

He said, Coming from a background in real estate, I found this a problem and it served as a motivation because I found out that there were lots of roofs that needed to be restored rather than being pulled down. Your roof tells people the kind of person that you are because that is the first thing that people see in your building; it is a crucial part of the building.

Over time, I have also found out that if you want to remain in this business of roof repairs and restoration, you must use quality products.

According to Igbaifua, the awareness on roof restoration and its importance in building aesthetics is very low in the country.

It took a long time for people to believe in what we are doing, but they are coming to terms with it gradually. It was more like a culture shock; people found it difficult to believe this kind of thing but now the awareness is growing. No matter how bad a roof is, it can be restored and this is one of the many fora we will be organising to create awareness, he said.

Igbaifua said roof repairs was in different stages, including inspection; cleaning of debris, moss and grimes; waterproofing application and repainting, which will result in better protection and appearance of the roof and the building in general.

The Project Manager, Plusworld Roofing, Mr. Franklin Ojeaburu, said the roof was an important part of building that must be cared for as much as the floors and walls.

According to him, restoration brings the roof back to its original function, making it watertight and adding beauty to the entire building.

Firestone Building Products Company recently presented Mid Michigan Roofing with the 2014 Partner in Quality Award.

The Saginaw firm is one of 189 Firestone Building Products Red Shield Licensed Roofing Contractors throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico that were honored for excellence in roofing system installation.

Firestone roofing contractors are required to complete extensive product installation training. Winners were required to meet the following parameters:

Install four warranted Firestone Building Products roofs in each of the past five years.

Maintain at least 1 million square feet of Firestone Building Products roofs under warranty.

Achieve an annual Quality Incidence Rating (QIR) of 1.5 or less (QIR measures each contractors performance based on warranty repair incidences per million square feet under warranty).
