Roof resources to prevent long term damage - July 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The roof of a home is one of the most important components to the structure, yet it often goes without care until an emergency. That's why a national organization is taking a week to put the roof at the forefront.

The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) is hosting National Roofing Week July 6-12. The goal is to educate the public about the importance of a roof and regular maintenance.

Most roofs last 20 years or more, but experts say to get the full potential from the structure, routine upkeep is necessary. Experts recommend hiring a professional to replace a roof or for serious work because of the risk associated with it. The Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) now requires roofers to wear harnesses among other regulations.

There are simple tasks homeowners can do themselves to prevent major damage in the future. One of the easiest prevention tools is checking the gutters.

"Gutter cleaning is a fairly basic thing to do but it's important," said Bill Good, the Executive Vice President with the National Roofing Contractors Association.

"Our recommendation is it makes sense twice a year to have your roof looked at. Once would be in the fall before winter," said Good. "Then we recommend you take a look after the winter, in the spring, to see if there is any damage that has been done."

New Roofing Material On Pitt Building Will Eat Pollution - July 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Receive News, Politics, and Entertainment Headlines Each Morning.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) Roofs they are all around us, keeping out the elements.

Yet roofs are invisible especially on tall buildings that dot the landscape.

Now the University of Pittsburgh is experimenting with a new roofing product which eats pollution, says Dan Marcinko, Assistant Vice Chancellor.

Its supposed to pull nitrogen oxide out of the air which comes from car emissions, coal plants and other fossil-burning fuels, Marcinko told KDKA money editor Jon Delano.

Marcinko, who is the Universitys sustainability coordinator, says the roof of Posvar Hall is getting a special treatment of something called eco-activ manufactured by a company called Siplast.

Kirk Goodrum, who heads up research and development for Siplast, says eco-activ attacks the nitrogen pollutants in the air.

It changes it from a gas to a solid because in a gas form it can cause ground level ozone and can lead to respiratory issues, notes Goodrum.

So can one roof at Pitt make much of a difference?

$75,000 Worth of DaVinci Roofscapes Tiles Available in The Great TOH Giveaway - July 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Lenexa, KS (PRWEB) July 10, 2014

DaVinci Roofscapes, the nations leader in polymer roofing tile colors, has increased its prize offering in the 2014 version of The Great TOH Giveaway, set to launch in August issue of This Old House magazine. DaVinci will contribute $75,000 worth of Bellafort polymer roofing tiles for the promotion.

The DaVinci prize will be broken into three packages (each valued at $25,000) of Bellafort product. The three lucky winners may each select from Bellafort Shake or Bellafort Slate products as their prize in the contest. This is the third year that DaVinci has been a major sponsor with This Old House Ventures on The Great TOH Giveaway. Overall, more than $727,000 worth of prizes will be given away in the massive consumer contest.

It's exciting to offer even more DaVinci products to winners than we have in our previous contests, says Scott Omelianuk, editor of This Old House magazine. These synthetic roofing products received a strong amount of attention in our last two contests and were pleased that DaVinci is again serving as the exclusive provider of roofing products for The Great TOH Giveaway this year.

Bellafort roofing tiles have all the appearance and beauty of natural slate or shake roofing tiles but with a higher level of durability achieved by the companys proprietary-engineered polymer roofing formula.

Readers of the August 2014 issue of This Old House magazine can register for prizes from July 1 to September 1, 2014. People can also visit http://www.thisoldhouse.com/win to enter online and gain rules and requirements of the contest.

The three winners of this year's DaVinci prizes will be able to select from any of our available colors or blends in the Bellafort product line, says Ray Rosewall, president and CEO of DaVinci Roofscapes. These roofing tiles are ideal for all styles of homes across the country. The low-maintenance polymer tiles are impact- and fire-resistant, plus they resist curling, cracking and fading, algae, fungus and insects under normal conditions. Additionally, DaVinci roofing tiles resist water absorption, which eliminates freeze-thaw issues and allows for installation in all weather conditions.

Synthetic roofing tiles produced by DaVinci use virgin resins to assure product consistency and longevity. The proprietary engineered polymer incorporates fire retardant and state of the art ultraviolet and color stabilizers specifically formulated to withstand the wide variety of challenging environments that roofing materials are exposed to year after year. By using the finest resins available, DaVinci can provide a 50-year limited warranty on its roofing tiles. This long life means that homeowners can forgo the expense and hassle of roof replacement, when compared to lower quality alternatives, which eliminates additional construction waste and landfill load.

DaVinci also offers a unique program that encourages roofers and contractors to return the company's environmentally friendly roof scraps and cuttings from a project to its Kansas plant for recycling. The tiles are re-purposed as started tiles, thus keeping waste out of landfills.

The experienced team members at DaVinci Roofscapes develop and manufacture industry-leading polymer slate and shake roofing systems with an authentic look and superior performance. DaVinci leads the industry in the greatest selection of colors, tile thickness and tile width variety. The company's reliable products have a 50-year limited warranty and are 100 percent recyclable. All DaVinci high-performing roofing products are proudly made in America where the company is a member of the National Association of Home Builders, the National Association of Roofing Contractors, the Cool Roof Rating Council and the U.S. Green Building Council. Horsham employer to pay state $113K for injured worker - July 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A Horsham man who owns a roofing business is on the hook for $113,021 for failing to provide workers compensation insurance for an employee who was later injured on the job.

Paul A. Giovinazzo, who owns and operates Paul Giovinazzo Roofing, received a one-year probation after pleading guilty Thursday in Montgomery County Court to a charge of failing to procure workers compensation insurance for his employees.

Giovinazzo, 53, of the 700 block of Marietta Drive in the Ambler section of Horsham, will have to pay $113,021 in restitution to the Pennsylvania Uninsured Employer Guarantee Fund for costs it incurred in covering the compensation costs for the uninsured employee.

The victim, who was performing work for Giovinazzos roofing company, suffered unspecified serious injuries when he fell off a roof at a job site in Whitpain on May 19, 2008.

The victim in November 2009 filed a claim petition against Giovinazzo and the state uninsured guarantee fund, according to a criminal complaint.

Giovinazzo contested the petition, claiming the victim was not an employee of his company but, instead, was an independent contractor who was responsible for his own workers compensation insurance, the complaint said.

A workers compensation judge in July 2011 granted the victims claim, agreeing that there was an employee-employer relationship between Giovinazzo and the victim, according to the complaint. That same judge also ruled that Giovinazzo should have had workers compensation insurance not only for the victim but for his other workers, the complaint said.

The Pennsylvania Workers Compensation Appeals Board in August 2011 upheld the judges ruling, the complaint said.

The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry in February 2013 referred the matter to county detectives for prosecution of the alleged violation of the Pennsylvania Workers Compensation Act.
