    Tesla is starting to partner with other companies to install solar roof tiles and deploy the new solar product faster.

    In October of last year,Tesla launched version 3 of its Solar Roof tiles, which is now also known as Solarglass, and it saw a significant price decrease through optimization and faster installation.

    We posted aTesla Solar Roof V3 real quote comparison showing that the price dropped by 40%.

    Since launching the new version of the tiles, CEO Elon Musk wants an acceleration of production and installations of solar roofs.

    In March, Tesla announced that Gigafactory New York was now producing enough solar tiles to install 1,000 solar roofs per week.

    While the company based that claim on producing 4 MW of solar tiles, which isnt really enough for 1,000 roofs, it is still more than Tesla can install in a week as the installation capacity remains the bottleneck to expand solar roofs.

    We previously reported on Tesla trying to hire many new roofers in order to expand its capacity, but it is also looking to certified third-party installers to install its novel solar product.

    We have only heard of a handful of companies being onboarded onto the program, but it might be about to change as Tesla started to supply them with the tiles, and some are actually starting their own installations.

    Good Faith Energy, one of the biggest solar installers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, just confirmed that they are now authorized to install Tesla solar roofs, and they installed their first solar roof system.

    Mohammed Abdalla, CEO and founder of Good Faith Energy, announced:

    Last December, I reached out to Bob Anderson for the ~6,000th time to ask him whenTesla Solar Roofwas being rolled out. A week later,Michael Solanoand I were on a plane to L.A. to be among the first group of installers to learn how to install this product. Two months after the initial training, we sent a team of 6 to Santa Barbara to install their first real job and gain some on-the-job training. Fast forward to August andGood Faith Energyis among a few elite companies nationally thats capable of installing a Tesla roof autonomously.

    He shared a picture of the installation of a 9.3 kW Tesla solar roof on his own house:

    Sunpro, a large solar installer mostly operating in the US South, has also been getting certified to install Tesla solar roof.

    Tesla has been aiming to install a solar roof as fast or faster than it takes to install a regular non-solar roof, which is about a week, depending on the roof.

    Its far from the case at the moment, with some installations taking even more than a month, according to customer reports.

    Musk said that they will have installation crews compete ata new test structure at the Fremont factoryto see who could install the new solar tiles faster and better.

    Ultimately, the number of Tesla solar roof installations is limited by the roofers available to install them, and supplying third-party installers is expected to rapidly increase the capacity.

    Did you notice Mother Nature has been stingy in the Pikes Peak region when it comes to rain? In fact, U.S. Drought Monitor data reveal that El Paso County and Teller County are in moderate drought while Pueblo County is in severe drought. These worrisome drought conditions bring increased wildfire risk.

    Part of the Fountain Creek Watershed Flood Control and Greenway Districts mission to provide a safe and environmentally functional waterway is to provide information on drought to keep our community informed of fire risk.

    According to the U.S. Forest Service, the wildfire outlook has worsened in recent decades. The wildfire season lasts longer, fires tend to be larger and fire behavior is more extreme.

    One explanation is the concept of naturally occurring wet and dry cycles. Unfortunately, we are in an extended DRY cycle. In the book New Mexico 2050, ecologist Craig D. Allen, PhD explains that the Southwest was relatively wet between the 1970s and 1990s and that the current dry spell began in the late 1990s. These phases are driven by heat patterns in the Pacific Ocean and are visible in the tree-ring record going back for centuries.

    How is our watershed impacted by wildfires?

    Knowing that were in an extended dry cycle is especially alarming, considering how severely wildfires can impact our watershed:

    Less vegetation in a burn area can reduce snowpack conditions, resulting in faster and earlier runoff.

    The soil in a burn area can become hydrophobic it actually repels water!

    These conditions increase surface runoff and erosion, and this can lead to mudslides, flash floods, and debris flows that dump soil, rocks, and trees into our streams and reservoirs and endanger our citizens.

    Increased carbon, manganese, and fire retardant enter our streams, which decreases water quality.

    Our watershed has been impacted by the two most destructive fires in Colorado.

    Wikipedia presents a List of Colorado Wildfires, detailing the largest and most destructive wildfires in Colorado since 1924. In the last decade, our region earned the unfortunate distinction of experiencing the two most destructive fires on record in Colorado.

    The 2012 Waldo Canyon Fire scorched more than 18,000 acres, resulting in two fatalities, and the loss of 346 structures and was, up to that point, the most destructive fire in Colorado since 1924. Also, within days of fire containment, heavy rains coupled with unstable soil conditions resulted in devastating flash floods, with additional property losses and one fatality.

    Just one year later, in 2013, the Black Forest Fire burned more than 14,000 acres. This tragic wildfire claimed the lives of two people and destroyed 511 structures, and it now ranks as Colorados most destructive fire since 1924.

    JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas (AFNS) --

    Airborne imagery and light detecting and ranging, or LiDAR, data collected under an Air Force enterprise installations contract began in 2016 continues to build and fortify the digital foundation for installations of the future, including hurricane stricken Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida.

    High fidelity and accuracy of these data sources are critical elements for future deployment of autonomous vehicles on installations and for effective placement of sensors powering smart facilities of tomorrow.

    Under the enterprise contract, data is collected at each Air Force installation every three years, and by exception based on mission requirements. Centralized collection allows the Air Force to gather data once and use it endlessly for a wide variety of missions, improving context supporting data-driven basing, support and battle-space decisions and investments.

    This enterprise approach has resulted in a 40% cost savings over de-centralized execution previously conducted by installations, while simultaneously expanding access to the information by cross-functional and multi-domain users.

    Today, following in the footsteps of civil engineer innovators and early adopters, this same data helps build infrastructure and environment management, force protection and flight safety decision making across the enterprise.

    Timely, relevant, compelling dataFor example, a few days following Hurricane Michael striking Tyndall AFB, the Air Force Civil Engineer Centers digital response included the collection of airborne imagery to support initial facility damage assessments conducted remotely between structural engineers and geospatial analysts. A six-month LiDAR collection, followed by annual imagery and LiDAR collection, continues to be used extensively by civil engineers and private industry partners for base reconstruction and installation of the future pursuits.

    Making sure this data is visible, accessible, understandable, linked and trusted has resulted in significant cost avoidance by collecting it once for use by many, saving time and effort conducting surveys needed to perform engineering and design tasks, said Lt. Col. Ruben Choi, AFCECs Planning and Integration Requirements Identification Branch chief.

    Geospatial engineering innovatorsNumerous examples of Airmen leading deployment of cutting-edge geospatial technologies include the use of LiDAR to survey and assess roofing systems at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, geographically separated unit radar sites, and the iconic U.S. Air Force Academy Chapel indoor environments, and deploying small unmanned aerial systems and thermal imaging to assess Installation infrastructure.

    Limited Air Force deployments of thermal imagery for infrastructure management have proven to be of substantial value for derived data supporting energy reduction objectives. Like LiDAR, thermal imagery makes the invisible visible. Several bases have successfully used airborne and hand-held thermal sensors to identify areas for improving energy management. Its use reduces costs by improving built and natural environment knowledge supporting program management and investments.

    Adding airborne thermal imagery to the enterprise installations airborne imagery and LiDAR package is currently under consideration, and is expected to significantly reduce coordination required and eliminate acquisition costs for installations wanting to apply thermal imaging for assessing exterior building envelopes, conditions of windows, doors and other penetrations located on walls and roof systems.

    Increased interest in geospatial technologies has caught the attention of organizations like AFWERX and the Air Force Installation and Mission Support Centers Innovation Office. For example, in the fall of 2019 AFIMSCs Innovation Office began field testing an unmanned aerial system equipped with light detection and ranging, multi-spectral sensors and machine-learning algorithms to map, survey and inventory habitat for the golden-cheeked warbler at Camp Bullis, Texas.

    This incredible initiative is one of many where the Air Force GeoBase Program intends to place more emphasis on collaboration to maximize enterprise investments to achieve greater understanding of the operating environment for strengthening force protection, improving readiness and enabling steps to achieve smart facilities and installations.

Their adoption by Air Force civil engineers provides comprehensive data sets enabling high-quality analysis supporting data-driven decisions for installation lifecycle management and force protection.
