Roof shingle – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - October 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Roof shingles are a roof covering consisting of individual overlapping elements. These elements are typically flat, rectangular shapes laid in courses from the bottom edge of the roof up, with each successive course overlapping the joints below. Shingles are made of various materials such as wood, slate, flagstone, fibre cement, metal, plastic, and composite material such as asphalt shingles. Roof shingles are a very common roofing material, but deteriorate faster and need to repel more water than wall shingles.

Shingle is a corruption of German shindle (shindel) meaning a roofing slate.[1] Shingles historically were called tiles and shingle was a term applied to wood shingles.[2]

Shingles are laid in courses usually with each shingle offset from its neighbors. The first course is the starter course and the last being a ridge course or ridge slates for a slate roof. The ridge is often being covered with a ridge cap, board, piece, or roll[3] sometimes with a special ridge vent material.

Roof shingles are almost always highly visible and so are an important aspect of a building's aesthetics in patterns, textures and colors. Roof shingles, like other building materials on vernacular buildings, are typically of a material locally available. The type of shingle is taken into account before construction because the material affects the roof pitch and construction method: Some shingles can be installed on lath where others need solid sheathing (sheeting) on the roof deck. All shingle roofs are installed from the bottom upward beginning with a starter course and the edge seams offset to avoid leaks. Many shingle installations benefit from being placed on top of an underlayment material such as asphalt felt paper to prevent leaks even from wind driven rain and snow and ice dams in cold climates. At the ridge the shingles on one side of the roof simply extend past the ridge or there is a ridge cap consisting of boards, copper, or lead sheeting. An asphalt shingle roof has flexible asphalt shingles as the ridge cap. Some roof shingles are non-combustable or have a better fire rating than others which influence their use, some building codes do not allow the use of shingles with less than a class-A fire rating to be used on some types of buildings. Due to increased fire hazard, wood shingles and organic-based asphalt shingles have become less common than fiberglass-based asphalt shingles. No shingles are water-tight so the minimum recommended roof pitch is 4:12 without additional underlayment materials.[4]

Roof shingles of Fitzroya came to be used as money and called "Real de Alerce".

Left: Example of faster asphalt shingle wear along eaves due to channeled water running down the roof. Right: Severe shrinkage resulting in tearing away of entire tabs. Note the exposed nail heads. Water running down the roof can seep around the nails into the interior space.

In the United States, fiberglass-based asphalt shingles are by far the most common roofing material used for residential roofing applications. They are easy to install, relatively affordable, last 20 to 50 years and are recyclable in some areas. Asphalt shingles come in a large number of styles and colors.

The protective nature of paper and fiberglass asphalt shingles primarily comes from the long-chain petroleum hydrocarbons, while wood shingles are protected by natural oils in the cellulose structure. Over time in the hot sun, these oils soften and when rain falls the oils are gradually washed out of the shingles. During rain, more water is channeled along eaves and complex rooflines, and these are subsequently more prone to erosion than other areas.

Eventually the loss of the oils causes asphalt shingle fibers to shrink and wood shingles to rot, exposing the nail heads under the shingles. Once the nail heads are exposed, water running down the roof can seep into the building around the nail shank, resulting in rotting of underlying roof building materials and causing moisture damage to ceilings and paint inside.

Two basic types of wood shingles are called shingles and shakes. The difference is in how they are made, the shingles are sawn and shakes are split. Wood shingles and shakes have long been known as a fire hazard and have been banned in various places, particularly in urban areas where exterior, combustible building materials contribute to devastating fires known as conflagrations.

Solar Roofing – Flat and Metal Roofs with Integrated Solar … - October 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

In this article we will discuss solar roofing systems, which integrate roofing materials with solar PV panels or solar thermal systems. Specifically we will cover, metal roofs, PVC flat roofing membranes and asphalt shingles. Although most roof-mounted solar systems are installed on top of an existing roof be it an asphalt shingles roof or any type of flat roof these solar systems are not integrated into the roofing material, and therefore are not solar roofs.

Most solar systems are installed on a roof of a house or a building. The exception are solar farms or ground-mounted solar installations, but these are rare, and are usually 100% commercial solar systems. There are a number of reasons why most solar systems are installed on roofs. The primary one being limited space especially in an urban setting, where roofs represent significant unused space. Another reason is that usually roofs are not shaded by trees, nearby buildings, etc they are the highest point of a building with great sun exposure, which makes them perfect to install solar panels on.

Solar roofing is a final product, which integrates solar panels with the roofing material suitable for either a sloped or a flat roof. The solar panels used in solar roofing are usually thin-film photovoltaic laminates. Most popular Solar PV laminates commercially used today, are the Unisolar thin-film PV panels.

Unisolar thin-film PV laminates were originally designed to fit into and be integrated with standing seam metal roof panels. Unisolar panels are 15.5 inches wide and fit perfectly into a 16 standing seam panels, and are attached or laminated with special butyl adhesive that is on the back of each Uni-solar PV panel.

However, unlike with metal roofs, solar integrators were having flat roof leak repair issues with solar systems they installed on flat commercial roofs. After they installed solar mounting racks and attached them to the roof deck, the fasteners would start leaking after a while.

Roofing manufacturers adressed this issue with different versions of flat roofing materials that integrated Unisolar PV panels one such system is IB Solar Roof. There are many types of both solar metal roofs and solar flat roofs, using solar PV panels from various manufacturers (though as I said, most do use Unisolar PV laminates).

The most common type of solar metal roofing is the standing seam metal roof with integrated Unisolar PV laminates. Unisolar PV laminates were initially designed to fit in the pan of standing seam panels, with the connection terminals concealed by the ridge cap. Because the connectors or terminals of these PV panels are not UV stable, they need to be hidden from the sun, while the rest of the panel is of course exposed to the sun to generate solar electricity.

The benefits of standing seam solar metal roofing include fast installation, easy troubleshooting, and lifetime leak free roof performance. Additionally, in the US, you can get the 30% solar tax credit for installing a metal roof, as it is a part of the solar system.

Another type of solar metal roofing would be solar metal shingles. The concept is similar to solar standing seam roofing, but since metal shingles are much smaller, the solar PV laminates have to be adjusted to the size of the shingle. Also, all the terminals must be connected during the installation if you miss just one, the circle will be broken and the solar system will not work. Imagine finding the broken link when you have hundreds if not thousands of metal shingles to take off to find one broken connection!

Price-wise, I think that standing seam solar metal roofing is much more viable, as there is substantially less installation labor involved and much less potential troubleshooting, if something goes wrong. Imagine hiring a solar integrator and a professional metal roofer at $75-100 per hour each to find what is wrong with your solar metal shingles roof. Even if everything is peachy, the amount of time that will be used to install solar metal shingles is much more than that of a solar standing seam roof. The total solar system price will be significantly higher just from all that extra labor.

Teenager burgles company, steals N500, 000 roofing sheets - October 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Kayode Aderanti | credits: http://newtelegraphonline.com

The police in Lagos have arrested an 18-year-old boy, Tope Mayowa, for allegedly breaking into a companys premises, and stealing roofing sheets worth N500, 000 at the site.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Mayowa, a dropout, was arrested on Monday, October 20 by policemen attached to the Langbasa Police Division, Ajah.

Our correspondent gathered that the suspect had allegedly connived with a gang, and had sneaked into the pharmaceutical company, located at Kilometre 1, Badore Road, Ado, Ajah where a construction work was ongoing, to perpetrate the act.

It was learnt that around 2pm, while workers were at the site, some of them noticed suspicious movements in the area, and raised the alarm. When, the workers sighted them, other members of the gang were said to have fled while Muyiwa was arrested and handed over to the police.

Before being detained in custody, Mayowa confessed that his plan was to take the stolen roofing sheets to some dealers and sell at a giveaway price, adding that it was his second operation. He however denied that he was a member of a gang.

He said, I dont live with my parents. I stay with an in-law. I thought about this operation and came for it because I needed money. I needed to take care of myself. I did not know it would turn out this way.

My plan was to take the roofing sheets to some people who would buy them at a giveaway price. This was the second time I would be coming to the site. I am sorry for doing this, but I dont have any gang member. I came on the premises alone.

Our correspondent learnt that after Mayowa was caught, he was handed over to the police at Langbasa for further interrogation.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the arrest, adding that he would be charged to court.
