Christmas Special: Top 5 Videos Of Sports Cars With Christmas Trees On Their Roofs – Zigwheels.com - December 28, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

Christmas is a great way to end the year you get a break from work, relax with the family and focus all your energy on simply keeping warm. But in some cultures, its that time of the year when you have to put a roof rack on whichever vehicle you own, drive to a farm, and bring home a real baby pine tree strapped to the cars roof, all the while hoping it wouldnt untangle and reduced to debris on the road. Most of us wouldnt subject an expensive exotic to such an ordeal. But dont worry, no sports cars were harmed in the making of these videos:

    Hennessey Performance Audi RS6

Even without modifications, a stock Audi RS6 Avant estate can still get you to 100kmph in just 3.6 seconds. But this Hennessey-tuned RS6 station wagon puts out more than 800PS from its twin-turbo V8 engine, and even with a tree on top, it could still manage to reach 294.5kmph! Without the tree, the top speed is 330kmph, making it an incredibly fast estate car.

    BMW M2 Competition

You wouldnt want a once-a-year tradition to ruin your cars expensive paintwork. Thats why this BMW M2 owner has given her car a wrap that makes the Bimmer look like its wearing a Christmas sweater, before putting a christmas tree on it. Its all fun and games until the fuel stop at the end of the video.

    Lamborghini Murcielago Replica

No sane person would risk breaking parts on a Italian supercar made in small numbers thats no longer in production. Thankfully, this Lamborghini replica isnt a Murcielago, its a Toyota MR2 turbo sports car underneath. It looks brilliant on the road with a christmas tree on its roof, but the cabin is cramped, the roof leaks, its peak winter and its raining.

    Hennessey Performance Porsche 911

This Porsche 911 Turbo S is owned by John Hennessey himself, and its been boosted to 750PS. It still gets to 281kmph with a tree strapped to its roof. But pine trees werent made to be aerodynamic, and that shows in the second run, where the car seems visibly more stable and adept at handling speed. It reaches terminal velocity at around 330kmph.

    Morgan Plus Four CX-T

Occasionally getting to drive iconic, rare sports cars is a fringe benefit of working at Morgan, and 19-year-old Hamish exploits it fully during Christmas shopping. He straps the tree on a battle-scarred prototype, and drives it the way the Plus Four CX-T was meant to be driven sliding around happily in the mud. Thankfully, the tree comes home intact mostly.

    Bonus: Tesla Model 3

To end this listicle on a sensible note, here's a video of Christmas tree shopping done right. You might already know about Tesla's glass roofs, so unless youre ready to risk an expensive repair bill, all the luggage has to go in the boot. As it turns out, even Teslas smallest Model 3 sports sedan can hold a properly large Christmas tree with the rear seats folded flat. The Model 3 carries it in emissions-free silence, and if the tree is properly secured, the EV can scoot from 0-100kmph as quickly as any other car on this list.

SPOTLIGHT ON BUSINESS: Grace Roofing strives to meet your roofing expectations and more – Bethlehem Spotlight - February 16, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

SLINGERLANDS I love hearing the expectation in a clients voice as they talk about the home they love, said Guinevere Gorman, owner at Grace Roofing. It is rewarding, fusing the age and style of a house with the right roof product and color. It is important that it complements the overall design and feel of the house all while protecting their real estate investment with a transferable warranty.

An influence in Gormans artistry is that she has traveled and experienced different cultures throughout the world. She sees hints of those countries in the architecture, period and even neighborhoods of the greater Bethlehem area. Travel experience notwithstanding, she is still very much a local, as is her husband Nigel, who leads rigorous and detailed installs for each project.

The connections you have with clients who have grown up in the same area makes the outcome a shared victory, she said. And this year we had the privilege of doing two roofs that were part of my childhood: Indian Ladder Farms Original Farmhouse and Howes Caverns Lobby Roof.

We were also excited when asked to plan and install roofing for existing clients vacation homes in places like Lake Placid and Paradox Lake. The bonus being that our crews worked along stunning views of the water!

To put even more light on the subject, Guinevere and Nigel specialize in skylight design, preparation and installation so that northern-climate houses can still invite a bit of Mother Natures illumination into their homes throughout the longest of wintersand even through 2020!

Grace Roofing crews specialize in metal and shingle installs and are also adept with specialty styles such as Synthetic Slate, Spanish Barrel Tiles and Cedar Shakes.

Snow weighs heavily on roofs, minds of homeowners – Chicago Sun-Times - February 16, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

As reports grew of buildings collapsing Tuesday, Terry Czerniejewski stood by his garage in Belmont Cragin holding two poles strung together with a 12-inch long wooden plank attached to the end of one of them.

The makeshift tool was necessary after yet another snowstorm blanketed the area, forcing residents to get creative to protect their property.

There is probably a couple thousand pounds of weight sitting on it right now, Czerniejewski said of his roof. Its a lot of weight and I dont want it to cave in.

That already was the fate of a handful of buildings in the Chicago area, including a vacant building near 75th Street and Ridgeland Avenue, which collapsed Tuesday evening. Earlier in the day in Brainerd on the South Side, a man watched as an abandoned building in the 700 block of West 91st Street caved in.

Firefighters also discovered a collapsed building while driving in the South Chicago neighborhood. A roof also buckled at a Morton Grove equestrian center Tuesday afternoon. No one was hurt in any of these incidents, but a few cars were damaged by the falling debris, officials said.

That follows a roof that collapsed in Englewood on Sunday and two in Elgin that caved in last week.

Almost all of the buildings that collapsed were large facilities that were vacant or abandoned and had a bowstring truss roof system, with an arched roof but without traditional support columns, officials said.

Larry Merritt, a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department said, the system has trouble holding heavy loads for a long period of time, especially in buildings that are dilapidated or vacant.

Moisture from snow piled up along the perimeter can seep into brickwork when the snow melts. Then the water will expand when it turns to ice, pushing the bricks outward leading to what is called a pancake collapse.

If the building is occupied that helps melt the ice because of the heat generated inside, which stops freezing, Merritt said. When its not then the ice will continue to expand.

But owners of buildings with all types of roofs should be concerned about a range of potential damage after a heavy snowstorm, said Robert Ely, co-owner of Chicago Roofing Services Inc. in Logan Square.

The freeze-thaw cycle is what causes the most damage to roofs because on days like this the sun is out and you will begin seeing a little bit of melting, Ely said. Then at night, when the temperature drops again, the water that is trapped will begin freezing and turning into ice.

Its my experience that this is what does the most damage to roofs and gutters besides the snow, Ely said.

Anytime a roof has been hit with more than eight inches of snow you should consider hiring a professional to remove it by applying heat, Ely said.

That can cost as much as $1,000 or more, depending on the roofs size, he said.

Its a dangerous job and extremely time consuming like my guys will take about eight hours to safely remove snow and ice from a roof, Ely said. More importantly, people must do preventative measures like annual inspections or adding heating coils to the perimeter of the building for extra protection.

Czerniejewski, though, planned to take matters into his own hands, although he said he had no intentions of climbing his roof to remove the snow. He planned to scrape off as much snow as possible with his makeshift tool then head inside for a warm drink.

Manny Ramos is a corps member in Report for America, a not-for-profit journalism program that aims to bolster Sun-Times coverage of issues affecting Chicagos South and West sides.

What to consider when buying roofing shoes – Love Belfast - February 16, 2021 by Mr HomeBuilder

Roofing is a dangerous job often done in extreme weather conditions. You need specialist equipment, experience and knowledge to work in roofing. A pair of good quality roofing shoes can prevent fatal injuries and keep you comfortable during a hard days work.

There are countless roofing shoes on the market. Here a few things to consider before investing in a pair.

    Traction

After you have stripped the roof, it will be smooth and covered in debris. A whopping40% of construction fatalities occur from slipping. Choose a pair of shoes with an aggressive tread design to combat the wet slippery surface. Avoid anything with deep lugs or cut-outs to maximise your soles contact with the roof.

    Comfort

The last thing you want after a long day on the roof are blisters and sore feet. It would help if you had a pair of shoes that are comfortable, lightweight and flexible so you can manoeuvre easily. If you have flatter feet, consider getting a pair with arch support. Or, you can buy separate orthotic arches to slot into your shoes. Make sure your shoes fit snuggly and arent slipping off before getting on the roof.

    Durability

Leather is the best option when it comes to roofing shoes. Leather can withstand asphalt shingles, tar and the elements. It canlast at least four to five monthsin extreme conditions. Although budget options are tempting,high-quality roofing shoeswill keep you safer for longer.

    Waterproof

If it is wet or icy, it is best to avoid roofing altogether. However, if you have to work in damp conditions, you will need waterproof shoes. These also come in handy during flash showers and muddy work conditions. Dry feet are happy feet.

    Shock resistant

Even if you think you are safe, the chances are there are some electrical hazards around you. Live wires and transformers are common on building sites. Did you know10% of roofing fatalities occur from electrocution? Opt for shoes with a thick rubber sole to keep you grounded and protected from the flow of electricity.

    Smart lacing

Although slip-on boots may feel more comfortable to get on in the morning, they arent as flexible and snug-fitting. Lace-up boots adjust to your feet and keep your ankles secure from injury. Make sure your lacing is tied perfectly before climbing up to the roof. Its also best to invest in a lacing system that begins at the top of your foot, extending to the tongue.

There was this almighty noise, so I just turned around and the roof was being peeled back like a can of sardines, Brown said.

Firefighters work to secure loose roofing on the gym at New Plymouths Spotswood College as strong winds battered Taranaki on Tuesday.

It has been to a mix of everything from loose roofing iron at commercial and residential properties, to fallen trees, and flying trampolines, as well as having to deal with our usual jobs such as alarm activations, medical incidents and motor vehicle accidents.

Crowe said a car had been significantly damaged when a tree fell on it in Brooklands.

A trampoline was blown into some bushes on South Road, State Highway 45, on Tuesday afternoon.

Theere was also a afternoon callout to The Warehouse on Courtney St in New Plymouth where a large piece of roof flashing had come loose.

With the strong winds forecast to continue, Crowe advised property owners to check around their sections and secure any loose items like outdoor furniture and trampolines to avoid them becoming flying projectiles.

Police were first called to State Highway 3, Welbourn, just outside the city, around 6.50am after a fallen tree partially blocked the southbound lane.

The winds also saw the area around New Plymouths clock tower closed off for public safety as the gusts had shaken one of the window fittings loose, a New Plymouth District Council media spokesman said.

In the evening, Hackling said they were called to assist with the glass in the clock tower, but had to be careful with their staff using ladders in the high winds.
