Centennial School Board OKs roof renovations - April 17, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

When the school district sold three elementary schools last April, the board of directors made a note that the funds received from the sale would be used toward improvements to the roofs of Centennial middle schools.

The project of roof replacement and repairs is now moving forward as the Centennial School Board approved two bid awards at the last board meeting April 9.

Jottan Inc. of Florence, N.J., will take on the replacement of Warminsters Log College Middle School roof as the company came in as the lowest bitter of 10 roofing companies. The project of the roof replacement will cost the district $1.4 million.

US Roofing of Norristown came in as the lowest bidder for the roof repair project at Klinger Elementary School in Southampton at $58,800. The district received five bids for the project with bids as high as $110,000.

According to school officials, the repairs at Klinger Middle School will not complete the schools roofing improvement and the district will have to eventually replace the roof within the next couple of years.

During the meeting the school board also approved June 20 as the last day of school this year. June 20 also marks graduation day for seniors at William Tennent High School.

Grass Lake School board approves new roof for middle school - April 17, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

GRASS LAKE, MI Grass Lake Middle School will receive a new roof this summer.

The school board on Monday approved a bid from McDonald Roofing that will replace a portion of the middle school roof. The $39,000 project is the third phase of a five-year roof replacement schedule the district created two years ago.

We want to make sure we keep up on the roofs so we dont have to incur debt in the future, Superintendent Brad Hamilton said.

The district created the five-year roof replacement plan in order to prevent major roof repairs. The plan includes replacing most of the roofing at Grass Lake Middle School and George Long Elementary.

According to school officials, funds for the new roof at the middle school are expected to come from the districts capital budget, not the general fund.

In other business, the district is increasing its driver education fee from $250 to $300. The current fee covers the cost of the instructors, but doesnt provide funds for vehicle replacement. The increased fee will allow the district to replace vehicles as needed.

Parishoners vote to save Lamont County church - April 14, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Parishoners have voted to save the 89-year-old Spaca Moskalyk Ukrainian Church located just north of Mundare in Lamont County.

About 90 people attended a meeting Saturday afternoon to vote on the churchs future.

The building was originally slated to be destroyed in a controlled burn after it was determined that the structure had an unstable foundation, but public outcry to save the church delayed its destruction.

Parishoner Cliff Moroziuk said that the possibility of a controlled burn was not even brought up at the meeting held Saturday. Instead, he said, the focus was on what needed to be done to preserve the church.

I think the fact that there was so many people out there really made the people who were against it take a second look, said Moroziuk.

In the end, two Edmonton-area companies stepped up and pledged to cover the cost of the much-needed foundation replacement.

On top of that, attendees set a fundraising goal of $100,000 to be reached by Sept. 30, 2013. That money will go towards roofing costs, window replacement, new eavestroughs and a fresh coat of paint for the church.

Moroziuk said it is hard to describe the relief he feels following todays vote.

Ive had $40,000 in pledges come to me already today, and to see all the people come out who really want to see the church being preserved as a legacy to the people who are buried there.

He says the biggest challenge now will be to raise the $100,000 needed by the September deadline.

Board to discuss roofing - April 14, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Neosho R-5 Board of Education is expected to award a bid for a new roof on the east building of South Elementary School as it meets Monday night.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the administration building, 418 Fairground Road.

Three contractors have responded to a request for bids. They were RSS Roofing, $172,440; Joplin Roofing, $166,590; and Kirberg Roofing, $142,950.

During a work session Thursday, board member Steve Douglas expressed concern about roofing projects in general. Douglas said the district has been using Tremco roofing products. While he didnt dispute the quality of the materials, he said using Tremco products discouraged contractors who use competitive products from considering the work. This, in turn, could keep the district from getting more competitive bids on roofing projects.

[Tremco] will go to a school district and tell them we will do the specs for the project and let it out for bids for you, Douglas said in a telephone interview Saturday night. They let it out for bids, but the specs will refer to specific patent numbers, patents that Tremco holds. And at the bottom of the spec sheet is the words prepared by Tremco. When contractors see that, they think Tremco has this all sewn up.

Douglas said trying to include other materials in the projects at this juncture in the South School project would likely delay it until after the 2013-14 school year has begun. He said such a delay would be unacceptable and that the project needed to be completed this summer.

But, he added, he would like to discuss it at Mondays meeting in order to make the bidding process more fair in the future.

Meanwhile, two companies have submitted bids for tuckpointing work at Central School and sealing and painting exterior walls at South Elementary.

Branco Enterprises bid $79,000 for the Central project and $56,000 for the South School renovations. Meanwhile, MTS Contracting put in a $51,500 bid for the Central work, and $22,500 for the work at South.

The board is also expected to vote on a change order for a new scoreboard at the softball field.

Valley contractors give scam victim a new roof - March 28, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Valley contractors have come to the aid of an elderly woman who fell victim to a roofing scam.

Mary Hartnett, of Phoenix, did her due diligence and everything checked out, but she still got scammed because the con man was pretending to be somebody else. This case is a good example of one extra step consumers should take when checking out a contractor.

Contractors just putthe final touches on Hartnett's brand new roof, butthe 88-year-old says it's been a long time coming. Three years ago her garage and dining room started leaking. She chose a contractor to replace the roof, but before she paid him, Hartnett did the smart thing and checked him out first.

"I called the Registrar of Contractors to see if he was registered and if he had a license and if he had any complaints," Hartnett said.

The ROC showed the contractor had a valid license and no complaints - so Hartnett paid him $10,000 to do the replacement. A year afterthe contractorfinished the job, the roof started leaking again.Hartnett had a friend take a look.

"He said, 'My gosh, Mary. That's a terrible roofing job.' He could lift the whole roof up on the garage area," Hartnett said.

It turns out the man who did the job was an imposter. Duane Yourko, of the Arizona Roofing Contractors Association, says the con man stole and was using the license number of a legitimate roofer who happened to have the exact same name.

"She was verifying the information, the correct name and number, but the individual performing the work and offering the contract on her house was not that individual," Yourko said.

The roof was in terrible condition and not up to code. SinceHartnett had done her due diligence, several members of the ARCA decided she deserved to get what she paid for. They just put the final touches on Hartnett's new roof at absolutely no cost to her.
