On Top Of The Roofing Industry - May 16, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Jack Carlon is owner of Carlon Roofing, a local roofing company in business for nearly 30 years.

    By ASHLEY ANDERSONStaff WriterThe Voice-Tribune

April showers bring May flowers, and signal the coming of a warm, sun-filled season supposedly. But in Louisville, you never know what type of weather to expect, especially during springtime. Severe thunder and hailstorms have been known to plague the city this time of year, and, oftentimes, cause a great deal of trouble for local homes.

Roofs, especially, are susceptible to damage as the part of your house most exposed to sun, heat, cold, wind, rain or snow. Before letting the humidity and other weather stress affect the exterior of your home, consider the help of one of Kentuckys largest residential and commercial roofing, gutter cleaning and installation businesses Carlon Roofing and Sheet Metal. The veteran full-service roofing and guttering company has served the Louisville and Southern Indiana area since 1984, providing both residential and commercial roofing services.

Carlon Roofing and Sheet Metal is located at 1430 Selinda Ave., off Poplar Level Road.

We have maintenance programs, and we go up on peoples roofs every year or two years and just check (it) out, said Jack Carlon, who founded the company almost 30 years ago while a student at the University of Kentucky. With an experienced staff of about 60 employees, many of whom have worked with Carlon from the start, the company offers superior-level expertise from a crew thats installed more than 10,000 roofs in the last 30 years. We dont have any turnover, we have the same guys all the time, Carlon said. Everybodys on the same page.

From roof repair to replacement, gutter cleaning or installation, Carlon can address the issues related to maintaining the surface of your home, not only keeping it in tip-top condition, but also enhancing it aesthetically. Gutter cleaning, in particular, can save on the cost of roof and home repair. Gutters full of debris or clogged downspouts lose function, which can lead to water from your roof going under the house, potentially compromising the foundation, flooding the basement, damaging your wood trim or siding. If you just neglect stuff and you let your gutters fall loose, and you let your gutters fill up, and then it rots out the fasten board and it rots out the decking, then all of the sudden when you get that (roof) work done, it ends up being more money to replace all the rotted wood, Carlon said.

To prevent such consequences, Carlon Roofing accommodates homes and businesses with the hand-cleaning and flushing of all gutters, as well as downspouts and elbows, and will bag all debris for proper disposal. The company also installs all phases of residential and commercial gutters, such as aluminum k style, metal box, copper k style and half round, cornice gutter lining and gutter guards.

Carlon emphasized the importance of performing minor maintenance and having your roof inspected after spring and fall in order to extend its life. You just have to do minor maintenance, advised the board member of the Kentucky Roofing Contractors Association (KRCA). The simple things like cleaning gutters inspecting the roof, looking for nail pops, looking for flashing that might come loose. You take care of those things, and then the roof (life) can extend.

Should the damage already be done and a roof replacement is in store, Carlon Roofing provides top-quality craftsmanship and performance to prevent the need for another replacement in the future, and the company fully supports its warranties. The difference between doing a good job and a mediocre job in quality is generally about 10 to 15 percent of a price of a roof, said Carlon. For instance, if Im charging you $11,500 for your roof and you get other bids for ($10,000), that $1,500 is really the difference, is all the accessories, that really adds up to about 15 percent of your ticket. And thats the difference between a good job that you dont have a problem for 30 years, or (having) nightmare problems.

Collapse Of Elgin Apartment Ceiling Injures 2, Forces Out 21 - May 14, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

ELGIN, Ill. (STMW) Fire officials suspect that faulty roofing-construction work caused a ceiling collapse that injured two people and made 21 temporarily homeless at the Blackhawk Apartments over the weekend, the Courier-News reports.

Battalion Chief Bryan McMahan of the Elgin Fire Department said 911 was called at 12:16 a.m. Saturday by a woman who said her apartments ceiling had caved in on her while she and a child were sleeping on their living-room couch. The collapse had occurred in one apartment on the third (top) floor of the apartment building at 925 Carriage Way, authorities said.

When the first firefighters arrived, they knew something serious had happened because pink insulation had been pushed out from underneath the apartments front door, McMahan said. To get to the family, they had to force their way in because drywall that had fallen off the ceiling had lodged against the inside of the door.

The woman and child sustained injuries not life-threatening and were reported in fair condition when they were taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin, the battalion chief said.

When firefighters began looking inside the other seven apartments on that floor, they discovered that nailheads had popped out and drywall was sagging in several of their ceilings, raising concern that their ceilings also might cave in. So the residents of all eight apartments, totaling 21 people, were ordered out of their homes.

McMahan said two of the displaced people received fire department vouchers to stay in a West Dundee motel while the others found temporary homes with relatives or friends.

The building has been undergoing a total roofing replacement and that that is suspected of having caused the collapse, McMahan said. He said Blackhawks property management company called a contractor to the site on Saturday and started immediately to work on repairs.

Fire officials estimated the damage at $7,500.

Providence St. Mary Medical Center Greens Up with First Green Roof in Walla Walla, Wash. - May 1, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

BEACHWOOD, Ohio and DURHAM, N.C. (PRWEB) May 01, 2013

Tremco Roofing and Building Maintenance and Xero Flor America (XFA), LLC announced the completion of a green roof at Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla, Wash. The Tremco Roofing Sedum Mat System, with components supplied by Xero Flor, was installed on a 10,000-square-foot section over the Operating Suites on the Medical Centers new 16,000-square-foot structural roof.

Providence St. Mary Medical Center needed to replace this roof and researched the benefits of adding a vegetated roof. This roof replacement approach doubled the life of the new roof membrane and provided other benefits as well, said Larry Baer, CHFM, CHSP, CHC, director of facilities, Providence St. Mary Medical Center. Air temperature reduction in the summer months, sustainable management of stormwater, and an enhanced patient experience all contributed to our decision to install a green roof.

The green roof will help the hospital meet its sustainability goals by conserving energy, said Elizabeth Hart, sustainable roofing specialist, Tremco Roofing and Building Maintenance. Moderating temperatures on the roof and lowering the temperature of the air drawn into the rooftop HVAC units decreases energy use and utility costs.

In selecting a green roof system for the project, St. Mary and its architect, Mahlum Architects, Portland, Ore., considered immediate visual impact, ease of installation and low maintenance. The Family Birthing Center and the west side of the Intensive Care Unit look out on the green roof. Thus, an instant green roof featuring extensive vegetative coverage with mature, full-grown plants for immediate beauty was a priority. In consideration of patient privacy concerns, a green roof that could be installed quickly and require minimal maintenance was also preferable. To reduce any potential for disrupting patient care, Enviroscapes Northwest, Inc., Portland, Ore., the green roof installer for the project, worked only in limited, designated hours.

We utilize Xero Flor pre-vegetated mat technology because it has a 40-year track record of successful applications on green roofs worldwide, said Hart. Their vegetated mats are the only ones Cradle to Cradle (C2C) Certified for environmental sustainability.

The pre-vegetative mats are grown for a full 9-12 months on independent, local farms, so the plants are mature and adapted to the regional climates where they are installed. Using local horticultural suppliers also supports local economies, reduces the costs of shipping, and decreases the carbon footprint, said Clayton Rugh, Ph.D., general manager and technical director, Xero Flor America (XFA). And all the components for green roof projects in the U.S.A. are 100 percent manufactured in the U.S.

Center firehouse roofing under way - April 22, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

AMBROSE CLANCY PHOTO | About 25 workers were scrambling atop the Center Firehouse this morning to fix a leaky roof.

About 25 workers from the R.W. Mulligan Company of Riverhead began work on the Center Firehouse roof this morning.

The roof had developed leaks that could be seen on the ceiling in the main meeting room on the buildings second floor.

Commissioners chose Mulligan from among five companies that had priced the project for Commissioner Keith Clark. Because the roof replacement was deemed an emergency repair, commissioners didnt have to put the project out to bid. But they requested that Mr. Clark get a sense of what the job would cost by speaking with various roofers.

Mulligan came in at a low price of $29,400. Others who priced the project were Cotrone at $32,200; Eli Construction at $35,625; Hunter at $46,500; and AAC Inc. at $51,500.

Mr. Clark described Mulligan as a very reputable company with huge crews able to tackle the project rapidly.
