Council Preview: Community Benefit Agreement, Workforce Development and Divvying Up Reserves - August 20, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

It's the first or third Tuesday of the month, which means the Metro Council convenes this evening at the Metro Courthouse. You can read the whole agenda here.

A resolution on tonight's consent agenda would appropriate $14 million from the reserve fund known as the 4 percent fund. The money will go to various Metro departments to be used on maintenance, repairs and equipment.

We reported on this resolution over at The City Paper (RIP) when the mayor's office filed it earlier this month. The analysis provided by council attorney Jon Cooper offers more details on how the funds will be used by each department (after the jump):

William Allen High School gym floor to be replaced due to water damage - August 15, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

The William Allen High School gymnasium floor will have to be replaced due to water damage sustained while the roof there was being repaired this summer.

The district will have to pay $295,000 for an entirely new floor after heavy rains and winds led to water infiltration through the new roof, ruining the gymnasium floor.

That means sports events and practices will have to be held at other schools, and gym classes will be moved to other portions of the building, said Director of Facilities Services Bob Sperling Jr.

"I think it goes without saying it'll be inconvenient," said Superintendent Russell Mayo. "It's certainly not an ideal situation, but we can accommodate it."

The new floors will not be finished until the end of October.

Water seeped through the roof above the gymnasium when the contractor doing the work there failed to properly shore up the roof in two separate locations, Sperling said.

The boards of the floor now appear wavy, Sperling said, and the damage was so extensive it cannot be repaired without leaving large patches on the floor.

"You can't use it for basketball, and you can't use it for gym," he said. "It would be a safety hazard."

The district will likely have to pay for the new floor, but will then seek reimbursement from the company that had been doing the roofing work: the Philadelphia-based Mike Kobithen Roofing.

That company had been installing a $392,000 new roof above the gymnasium, but the district originally only planned to spend about $50,000 for repairs to the 20-year-old gym floor, officials said.

Refurbished Braggs school ready - August 15, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

BRAGGS School starts Monday with new roofing and windows six months after Braggs voters agreed to fund them.

Braggs Superintendent Mike Broyles said roof replacement over the main classroom buildings was completed July 12 and the new steel frame windows and Corian window panes were installed Aug. 1. The roof over the main gym also was repaired over the summer, he said.

The windows and roofing were part of a $635,000 bond issue Braggs voters approved Feb. 12. The bond issue also included replacing roofs over the cafeteria and some adjoining classrooms, but those roofs are to be replaced over Christmas break or next summer, Broyles said.

Broyles said he had been optimistic about finishing most of the projects before the 2013 school year started, but he wanted to be sure.

Thats why we pushed the start of school back two weeks, he said, explaining that the Board of Education voted in April to start school Aug. 19 instead of Aug. 7.

Preparation before the bond issue also helped.

We had already talked about how the project was supposed to look like, Broyles said. We were able to start the project May 28. We had our specs ready for the roofing and our specs ready for the windows.

The only delay has been getting window blinds delivered, he said.

The schools main building dates to 1939 and had not been renovated since the 1970s. The previous classroom windows were single pane, providing little insulation.

In the summer time, it was so hot in here, you couldnt stand it, said school secretary Sue Berryhill. The old windows were really cold in the winter time, you could feel winter coming through them.

Choosing a Roofing Contractor During the Summer Roofing Season - August 1, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) July 31, 2013

Legends Roofing takes pride in their reputation as a reliable, trustworthy roofing company. The summer is the busy season for roofing and they want to make sure customers are in the know when choosing a roofing contractor.

Texas does not require roofing companies to be licensed, which means anyone can put a roof on a home. Roofing contractors can drive from all over the country to do work. While this may mean they give a lower price to complete the job, it also means they most likely will not honor a warranty they give.

Homeowners can choose a good roofing contractor by getting references of past customer's homes where work was performed and calling them. Choose a roofing contractor who is local. Also, customers can check out their company on the BBB website and Angie's List. Additionally, see if they have any certifications from material manufacturing companies. Most of those companies offer courses to roofers, which enables roofing companies to become certified shingle installers through them. Furthermore, ask companies to show you proof of insurance.

The importance of a roof is to protect everything inside a home or office. If it is not installed properly, numerous problems can arise: leaking, shingles can fall off, buckling and curling of shingles can occur, and exposed nails.

Call Legends Roofing today for more information (972) 210-2351.

    About the company:

Since 2002, the experts at Legends Roofing have been using the highest quality products while applying the highest quality roofing standards at all times. School Buildings Projects Moving Forward - July 25, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Written by Carolyn Levin, clevin@antonnews.com Thursday, 25 July 2013 00:00

Several school facilities projects are underway this summer, including roofing, masonry re-pointing and lintel replacement at Weber, Schreiber, Sousa and Guggenheim. Some ADA compliance projects will also be completed at these four schools. All of these projects were planned to make the buildings more secure. The majority of the work will be completed over the summer except for some of the masonry work, which will be finished during the beginning of the school year, said James Ristano, Director of Facilities & Operations for the Port Washington School District.

The projects are being funded by a bond referendum that was voted on and passed during the 2012/2013 budget vote. The past year was spent designing the projects and coordinating the bidding process.

According to Ristano, Weber will receive a complete removal of pitched and flat sections. The pitched sections will receive an architectural asphalt shingle; the flat sections will have an asphalt- type roofing system. The re-pointing of masonry sections and window lintel replacement will also take place.

Schreiber will have sections of the roof replaced; these sections include the Weight Room, Social Studies wing, and one of the general classroom wings. The re-pointing of sections with window lintels will also take place.

Sousa will have the last original section of the roof replaced, over the Kindergarten, Main Office wing and walkway canopy. Masonry work will be done there, as well.

Guggenheim will receive a new roof over the Multi-Purpose Room, Gymnasium and walkway canopies.

As we go forward, we will continue to evaluate all buildings within the district. This will allow for efficient planning of future projects, said Ristano.

The ADA compliance work is in the final design stages. This work will be publicly bid in the near future.

Additional projects that will be performed this year by the school district include the installation of Smart Boards throughout the elementary schools, a generator system that will allow power to be sustained to both our district wide network and phone system, during an emergency. Both the Technology and Facilities staff are working together on a battery backup system to be installed to support the district server room, as well.
