Morley Greening, left, vice-chair of CBDC Long Range, presents the 2013 Business Award of Distinction to Rick Flynn, general manager of BDW Roofing Inc.
He told those attending the annual general meeting of the Community Business Development Corporation (CBDC) Long Range that the company has grown from five to 18 employees and has had a direct impact on the community.
Mr. Flynn accepted the CBDCs 2013 Business Award of Distinction at Dhoon Lodge in Black Duck Siding. This year there were three nominations for this years award and BDW Roofing was chosen as winner.
When it comes down to it, CBDC really got this company going, said Mr. Flynn.
When Robert (White), the owner-operator, wanted to branch out on his own, he went to CBDC for guidance and support.
He said the roofing company is very safety conscious, with roofers that take great pride in their quality workmanship.
Mr. Flynn said since BDW got its bonding status last year, theyve been flat out doing large jobs and public tender work for everything from schools to municipal and government facilities.
In addition to roofing, they are also into asbestos abatement, mold detection and removal and infection control and do work all around the province.

The Canada Science and Technology Museum has halted work on replacing its roof after asbestos was discovered in roofing materials in the nearly 50-year-old building.
The museum discovered earlier this month, on the first day of the renovation project, that cement in the roof had a one-per-cent concentration of asbestos, said Fernand Proulx, the interim president and CEO of the Canada Science and Technology Museums Corporation.
As we started taking some of the membrane off, we notice some of the materials didnt look quite like concrete, Proulx said Friday.
When testing confirmed the presence of asbestos, the museum corporation halted work and brought in Stantec Consulting Ltd. to test air quality, beginning the evening of Oct. 16.
The tests did not detect the presence of asbestos fibre, and showed only minimal or non-existent particulate readings, well below required standards, the corporation said in a news release.
Proulx said the museum is now conducting air quality tests on a regular basis. Weve had zero traces at this point and were monitoring it, he said.
The museum plans to reseal the roof over the next two or three days and postpone the roof replacement for several months while it figures out how to proceed, Proulx said. Because of the asbestos, were going to have to have a different approach to take (the old roof) out.
While Proulx stressed there was no risk to museum visitors or staff, he said the problem will cause a little disturbance in the museum, with plastic protecting some of the artifacts. He doesnt expect the problem to interfere with the publics ability to visit the museum.
If through any kind of adjustments to the ceiling there was any kind of risk where the air quality was diminished, wed have to take other actions at that point, he said. But were pretty confident we can manage it.
The St. Laurent Boulevard museum is housed in a former bakery warehouse that is needs $3.4 million in major structural repairs, according to the museum corporations 2013-14 budget.

The board also approved the authorization for the School Energy Efficiency Project application for the heating and ventilation/air conditioning system replacement for the High School.
Hope Brown of Mose Yockey Brown and Kull LLC presented the audit report to the school board.
The education fund was the only deficit fund spending. Most school have two or three funds with deficit spending, Brown said.
She noted that the state and federal make up 52 percent of the revenue and the other 48 percent comes from local. The district has reserves which has helped in recent years.
Your financial profile score is a perfect 4.0. To get a 4.0, you guys have worked hard, Brown said.
The board approved the audit report.
Bence reported that area superintendents have met regarding the county sales tax referendum and will be seeking approval from their boards next month.
Fifty-one percent of the districts have to agree to put it on the ballot this spring, she said.

Hubbard Exteriors, a family-owned professional exterior renovation company in Alberta last week alerted homeowners in the Calgary metro area to the four telltale signs that their property may be in need of re-roofing. While re-roofing is a morose subject for many as it can be a costly affair, a spokesperson from Hubbard Exteriors said that: A homeowners best weapon of choice in preventing total rood replacement is doing checks regularly on the roofs surface and always being alert to how the roof is performing. This means being able to pinpoint small problems at the earliest possible time as this can spell the difference between a roof repair and roof replacement in future.
As winter is fast approaching and months of lie snowfall ahead, Hubbard Exteriors have said that climbing up on the roof is not always necessary in order to spot potential damage. Their spokesperson added that: Many homeowners only pay attention to their roofing starts to leak, however they should be aware that the absence of leaks on the roof does not equate to excellent roof condition, it can still have problems even if it is not leaking. In order to increase awareness before the onset of winter, Hubbard Exteriors have announced the four danger signs of a damaged roof:
The spokesperson from Hubbard Exteriors commented that: One should realize that replacing a roof is not your average DIY task. Homeowners may have done a DIY roof repair at one point or another but roof replacement is entirely a different matter. It will be a difficult job for them to do on their own especially if they dont have any knowledge or proper training on re-roofing. This is also a dangerous task. The best option is to go to a reliable roofing company to have the replacement taken care of.

Grant helps pay for tavern roofing -

Keeler Tavern Museum recently received a $10,500 grant from the 1772 Foundation, partially funding the replacement of the cedar shingle roof on the Cass Gilbert wing of its main building.
While replacing the roof in September, the museum also installed foam insulation to help minimize heating and cooling costs.
The focus of the 1772 Foundation, located in Pomfret, is the preservation and enhancement of American historical entities and projects. In Connecticut, the highly competitive application process is managed through the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation.
The museum continues to welcome donations toward its ongoing restoration efforts. As people are considering year-end charitable contributions, we hope that area residents will think to write a check to Keeler Tavern Museum, said Executive Director Hildi Grob. Support of this kind demonstrates to funders like 1772 Foundation that their generosity is matched by the people living in the communities in which the foundation has invested.
Information on the museum, including rentals of its Garden House, may be found at keelertavernmuseum.org.

Nu Look Home Design Roofing Company, one of Marylands leading roofing companies, today announced they have been recognized by The Better Business Bureau serving Greater Maryland Chapter.
The award isnt limited to Maryland roofing contractors; all types of businesses are invited to apply for this award that included BBB Accredited Businesses and those that are not accredited with the BBB as long as they maintain a satisfactory report with the BBB. These awards are given each year to companies that prove time and time again that customer service, integrity, and marketplace ethics are the first and foremost priority in running that business.
When the BBB announced a Business Ethics contest for the greater Maryland area, it just seemed a natural fit that Nu Look would enter. Nu Look Home Designs owner, Patrick Fingles, is a person of high integrity, and has successfully grown the company based on the ethical treatment of customers in a market that was not always accustomed to that kind of treatment. Nu Look was built with ethics in mind. At inception, the purpose of this company was to deliver higher quality replacement windows, roofing, products and service. As a young company, good business ethics are more of an idea than a standard. Making mistakes and finding weaknesses in your business is part of growing. Making changes to address those concerns turns ethics from an idea into a standard. Were not saying a young business cannot have strong ethics; were simply saying that your ethical standard should grow stronger with age. Even though our company is over a decade old, we still make changes to attain a higher standard of ethics every day. Strong business ethics start at the top and trickle down throughout a company. Patrick Fingles had a simple idea to deliver better quality products and service to his customers. Achieving this seems simple. Buy good products and install them properly. Not so simple. Its more like, Buy good products, show up on time, install them perfectly, dont step on the flowers and allow the customer to pay you in four weeks. This may sound like a picky customer, but I assure you it is, in fact, the want and right of every customer. So, very early in business, Patrick determined that achieving customer satisfaction takes much more than using high quality products with excellent service; its all of the little things in between.
During the award ceremony Patrick Fingles didnt take credit for this accomplishment, instead he gave all the credit to his employees saying Ive always believed that happy people have the ability to achieve extraordinary things. In addition, in the business world, happy employees equal happy clients, and thats not just good for business, its good for personal well-being, too. Call it the Happiness Effect.
