5 roof-repair tips: How to fix leaks and broken shingles … - April 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    more on PopularMechanics.com

In the home as in life its often the little things that matter. And its amazing how many small structural things can go wrong around your house. Whether its the front-door lock that wont let you into your own home or the cracked window that wont keep the cold out, small household problems can have a big effect. For most of these, theres no need to call for a repair professional the solution lies in tapping your ingenuity and using a few common household materials in innovative ways. Even when it seems that the roof is falling in or the floor is opening up beneath you there are often simple ways to solve larger problems on your own.

    1. Go with the pro: Assessing a roof leak.

Some overhead leaks are due to minor problems such as a single torn shingle or a small hole in flashing that you can usually handle with a little DIY experience and some basic tools. But other situations call for a roofers expertise. If you cant fix the problem quickly and completely, call a professional as soon as possible; water damage spreads quickly, even from a small leak. A licensed roofer is best when:

    2. Shingles bar: A bad storm has damaged a shingle on your roof; you need to protect the roof from further damage by way of the compromised shingle.

The quick fix Gather a tube of roofing cement and a piece of aluminum flashing (available at home centers). Cut the flashing about 1 inch narrower than the ripped tab and about 4 inches longer so that it extends under the tabs on either side. Use a flat pry bar to carefully loosen the damaged tab and the tabs to the left and right. Next, apply two or three thick beads of roofing cement to the surface beneath the shingle.

    Article continues below

Slip the flashing underneath and apply more roofing cement on top of the flashing. Press the tab down to adhere the flashing to the roof.

Chester facilities get state funds - April 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Infrastructure improvements at two Chester facilities will be covered by state funds.

Gov. Pat Quinn announced $4.4 million Thursday to replace the roofing system at Chester Mental Health Center and to construct a cold storage building at Menard Correctional Center in Chester.

The money comes from the Illinois Jobs Now! construction program.

Both projects will be managed by the Illinois Capital Development Board.

The $1,266,950 Menard Correctional Center project involves constructing a new, 10,000 square foot pre-engineered cold storage structure adjacent to an existing warehouse.

The successful bidders include general construction, Fager-McGee Commercial Construction, Inc. of Murphysboro, $1,158,000; and electrical, M.C. Electric, Inc. of Red Bud, $108,950. This latest efficient replacement at Menard Correctional Center (MCC) joins the more than 70% of all buildings there which are not original (1878) construction.

The roofing system at the Chester Mental Health Center, a Department of Human Services facility, will be replaced for $3,221,339 by Joiner Sheet Metal & Roofing, Inc. of Greenville.

Roof project highlights need for county facilities plan - April 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

GENEVA Kane County leaders need to better determine what they want to do regarding facility improvements.

That was the message from Administration Committee Chairman Ron Ford, D-Aurora, Thursday after the group decided to switch directions on a roofing project for a county building in downtown Geneva.

Staff solicited bids for a roof replacement project for 401 Campbell St. in Geneva a 1970s building just yards away from the Kane County Courthouse that is used as office space.

The lowest bid $59,850 was presented to the committee last month, but the committee held the item for a month.

County Board member Phil Lewis, R-St. Charles, said he was glad for the extra 30 days because he was able to tour the building, which, he said, is definitely in need of work.

Instead of replacing the roof, Lewis suggested the county hire an architectural firm to do a cost-benefit analysis of remodeling the one-story structure, possibly with a second story.

That would be great if we had the money to do that, said board member Theresa Barreiro, D-Aurora. Just last month, we were worried about $60,000, and now you want to redo the whole building.

Board member Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, agreed with Lewis in that he wouldnt want to invest tens of thousands of dollars in a building that might not be around long-term.

He suggested going with a third option of making $9,200 in roof repairs, which would buy the county some time to decide.

The committee directed staff to pursue that option after a motion to accept the nearly $60,000 bid failed, 3-2.
