Aerial Program discovers building energy efficiency faults. - July 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

July 14, 2014 - Available for use throughout Canada, SkyBEAM uses UAVs with Hi-Res IR and video cameras to locate where facilities may be leaking energy or have other potential problems. UAV scans roof inprogrammed pattern and takes hundreds of photographs that are combined into one image showing precise location of trouble areas.Solution graphically depicts energy inefficiencies by showing temperature variations within building, and virtual building model created in 2D and 3D can be viewed from any angle. Tremco, Inc. 3735 Green Rd. Beachwood, OH, 44122 USA Press release date: July 8, 2014

BEACHWOOD, Ohio -- Tremco Roofing and Building Maintenance proudly introduces SkyBEAM (Building Envelope Asset Mapping) for use throughout Canada. SkyBEAM(TM) is a groundbreaking program that uses unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with high-resolution thermographic (infrared) and video cameras to help Tremco Roofing's customers locate where their facilities may be leaking energy through gaps in the roof, facade or elsewhere, or may have wet insulation; and to find and photograph other potential problems on the building.

SkyBEAM's thermographic camera graphically depicts energy inefficiencies by showing temperature variations within the building, a result of problems that can lead to increased operating costs, occupant discomfort and other issues. Poor or missing sealing around windows, for example, typically allows energy to escape. On rooftops, wet insulation retains heat longer than dry insulation; wet insulation can cause enormous long-term damage if not removed.

"Using SkyBEAM to gather building data is faster, more thorough and safer than any other method," said Paul Sheehy, Tremco Roofing's Vice President of Sales. "Instead of standing on the ground and trying to map the facade of a multi-story building by holding a thermal or video camera, or by sending someone up in a lift, we program the UAV to fly to the precise height, do the mapping and return. We can now map buildings without the expense of tools such as scaffolding, so we can find problems for our customers that would have been virtually impossible to detect before. SkyBEAM also eliminates the need to send technicians onto rooftops to conduct infrared scans, which means no safety risks."

SkyBEAM is available to Tremco Roofing's customers anywhere in Canada through a relationship with Toronto-based Industrial SkyWorks, experts in aerial mapping and reporting.

A video explaining the SkyBEAM system and its many benefits can be found at http://www.tremcoroofing.com/services/skybeam-aerial-mapping/.

The safest way possible to find damaging wet insulation beneath the roof

Roofs are typically scanned to detect wet insulation, which is a roof's worst enemy. Spreading beneath a roof, it wastes energy, eats away at the roof deck, contributes to "sick building syndrome" and can be extremely expensive to repair. Since wet roof insulation absorbs and retains more solar energy than dry roof insulation, infrared scanning is most effective when the sun is not warming the building and will not affect the scan. Traditionally, this means sending a crew onto a roof at night, a dangerous situation despite safety precautions that Tremco Roofing puts in place.

SkyBEAM eliminates this danger. Highly-trained technicians safely on the ground operate the UAV, which scans the roof in a programmed pattern. SkyBEAM takes hundreds of photographs, which are combined into a single large image showing precisely where the roof's "hot spots" - wet insulation - are located. Technicians can then safely mark these areas during the day for removal and replacement, or further analysis if necessary.

In addition to infrared scanning, SkyBEAM's video camera can photograph other potential problems such as the need for appropriate rooftop safety equipment, including screens over skylights and permanent guardrails around hatches and the perimeter.

Hailstorms hitting Front Range in waves - July 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A May 22 hailstorm caused major damage to the siding of houses such as this one in the Green Valley Ranch community. (Hyoung Chang, The Denver Post)

Roofers and insurance adjusters are scrambling to keep up with a series of damaging storms that have hammered neighborhoods along the Front Range since late May, including a round that pelted Boulder and northern Jefferson counties Monday night.

"Both lines were ringing" Tuesday morning, said Matthew Rock, owner of Rock's Roofing in Wheat Ridge. "A lot of people are asking us to come out and look at the roof before the insurance company comes out."

Rock, who examined several roofs Tuesday, said the hail hit at a high rate of speed but was mostly marble-sized, which could limit overall damage.

"It has been continuous, storm after storm after storm," said Carole Walker, executive director of the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association.

The storms haven't packed a single huge wallop, but they made up for it in frequency and the claims are adding up.

Insurance adjusters, who need to approve payment for any repairs, can take up to a week to make their evaluation, roofing contractors said.

A light hurricane season and the lack of any major wildfires in the state so far this summer have made it easier for insurers to shift personnel around to deal with the storms.

"We have had to bring in additional resources to help our customers quickly," said Angela Thorpe, spokeswoman for State Farm Insurance, Colorado's largest carrier.

The extra help came after damaging storms hit the state the third week of May and has stayed on as successive waves of wind and hail have rolled through.

Meridian Junior High receives solar roof from anonymous donor - July 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The sun continues to shine brightly on the Meridian School District, and now that sunshine is not going to be wasted.

Thanks to an anonymous donor, the roof on the Meridian Junior High School was augmented with new solar shingle systems created by The Dow Chemical Co. and installed by Herbert Roofing and Installation of Midland.

Meridian School District staff, along with several Dow Chemical employees involved in the project, gathered last week to dedicate the new system and share ideas on other uses that can be gleaned from the addition.

The DOW POWERHOUSE Solar Shingle, a replacement shingle that takes up little space among existing shingles, collects solar energy that can be harnessed by the buildings that wear them. The technology can collect and generate several kilowatts of power for the building.

The project, referred to as The Meridian Junior High DOW POWERHOUSE Solar Shingle System, is expected to generate a large amount of energy for the building.

The average home can generate about 3.5-4 kilowatts of energy with the system, said Wrendon Hunt, Dow Chemical associate commercial director. This system will generate about 20 kilowatts. This will give energy savings in the hundreds of thousands of dollars in the next 20 or 30 years.

Hunt was one of the Dow employees on hand to answer questions as well as celebrate the gift from the anonymous benefactor.

We want to celebrate the donor today, said Josh Wimble, with marketing and business communications for Dow Solar and Dow Energy Materials.

Wimble said the gift will generate not only cost savings in energy use, but the new shingles also will last longer than standard asphalt shingles.

It protects as well or better than conventional shingles, Wimble said. And all of the wiring is internal.
