Built in 1820, the Col. Benjamin Stephenson House has survived for almost 200 years and the approval of a roof replacement by the Administrative and Community Services Committee will help secure the future of the building.
Henderson Associates Architects spokesperson Lynn Warren explained the need for the new roof came as a result of the chemicals used to treat the current wood shingles.
For the project, Warren recommended the city accept the bid from Taylor Roofing for the replacement of the wood roof with a wood shake roof.
The bid from Taylor Roofing is $48,500.
Parks and Recreation Director Bob Pfeiffer said a portion of the funds, $40,000, would come from a PEP grant from Madison County.
The additional $8,500 will be from the Friends of the Col. Benjamin Stephenson House.
I think the bids came in at a really good price, Pfeiffer said. There were some different numbers based on what we were going to do and I think we came in at the very best scenario that we could.
Assistant City Planner Cheryl Porter said the minutes from the meeting this item was first discussed at showed a projected cost of approximately $88,000.
Warren said the fasteners used in the new roof would be appropriate for the treatment of the new roof.
To preserve the life of the roof, the city has already installed ventilation around the eaves, in addition to a new underlayment to provide additional ventilation. Both of these measures will help achieve long life of the roof.
