Failing retaining wall forces closure of Brattleboro road - September 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

BRATTLEBORO -- Public Works Director Steve Barrett said Lower Green Street is going to remain closed while engineers determine the extent of the damage to the enormous retaining wall that supports the street.

Barrett ordered the road closed Friday after cracks appeared in Lower Green Street above the wall which leads down into the Harmony Parking Lot.

The town has been monitoring the wall for years, Barrett said, and a few weeks ago an engineer noticed a significant shift in the stones and earth.

Cracks then appeared in the pavement above the wall and Barrett closed the street to all vehicles.

"It's a serious situation. It could collapse," Barrett said Thursday.

The town closed the road from Retting Place to High Street to all vehicular traffic.

On Monday the town cut down the tops of the trees that are growing on the wall to protect buildings, vehicles and the public in case the wall does come down.

If the wall fails the trees would crash down as well, extending the damage that could be caused by the wall failure.

Cop 'slumped' during rush hour crash - September 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A runaway police car with an officer slumped behind the wheel sounded like an "explosion" when it crashed through a wall and flew into trees in front of a house.

The patrol car launched at least a metre into the air and into trees after striking a kerb and careering through a low retaining wall on East Coast Rd, in Mairangi Bay on Auckland's North Shore about 8am.

The sole male constable, who police say is in his 30s, was already slumped back in his seat according to one witness, as he ran up on to the kerb - knocking down a street sign - before accelerating, failing to take a bend, speeding through an intersection and crashing on the other side of the road.

Witnesses say the vehicle narrowly missed a man sitting on a wall near where the patrol car crashed.

"The officer in the vehicle did not look quite right when he zoomed past me.

He was sitting way back in his seat with his head right back against the headrest," said one witness, who drove past the officer shortly before he crashed.

The officer was understood to have suffered a "medical event" in the lead up to the crash and remained in critical condition in hospital yesterday, a police spokeswoman said.

According to neighbours who live metres from where the car came to rest, the crash was dramatic.

"It was like a huge explosion when he's hit that retaining wall," one woman, who didn't want to be named, said of the trees outside her front yard. "The whole house shook and we knew it was something big."

Derek Molloy, manager of Wright's Outdoor Equipment Centre across the road from the scene of the crash, witnessed the patrol car as it "shot through at a good rate of knots".

San Jose: Woman dies after being knocked off 101/I-680 ramp following crash - September 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SAN JOSE--A 27-year-old woman was killed early Saturday morning when she was thrown over a retaining wall after being struck by a car on a major freeway interchange, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Identified by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner's Office as Laura Banuelos, the woman was a passenger in a Honda that crashed into a retaining wall on northbound Interstate 680 shortly before 2 a.m., according CHP officer Robert Montano. The driver of the Honda had just turned onto the northbound I-680 ramp from northbound Highway 101.

After leaving the car, Montano said, Banuelos was hit and thrown over the retaining wall by a Mazda that was merging onto I-680 from southbound 101.

The crash remained under investigation Saturday, Montano said, adding that CHP investigators do not suspect that alcohol or drugs were factors in the collision.

Banuelos' last address was not immediately known, the medical examiner's office said.

Woman thrown over retaining wall in San Jose freeway crash dies - September 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    SAN JOSE, Calif.

The Santa Clara County medical examiner's office has identified a passenger killed in a vehicle on the connector ramp from U.S. Highway 101 to northbound Interstate Highway 680 in San Jose early Saturday morning as 27-year-old transient Laura Banuelos.

The crash was reported at about 1:50 a.m. and a Sig-alert was issued at 2:20 a.m., signaling the blockage of all lanes on northbound 101 near the connector ramp, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officers received a report of a collision involving two vehicles on the transition ramp.

When officers arrived at the scene there was a green 1999 Honda and a red 2004 Mazda blocking the lanes of traffic, according to the CHP.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of the Honda lost control of the vehicle while transitioning onto northbound I-680 from northbound Highway 101, causing the vehicle to crash into the concrete retaining wall, the CHP said.

Following the collision, both the female driver and the female passenger of the Honda got out of the vehicle.

The driver of a Mazda was traveling on southbound Highway 101 onto northbound I-680 and saw the Honda blocking the lanes of traffic, but was unable to avoid striking the Honda, the CHP said.

The force of the collision caused the female passenger who was standing on the ramp to be thrown over the retaining wall, according to the CHP.

She landed on the King Road off-ramp from I-680 below and was declared deceased at the scene, the CHP officials said.
