Sharpsburg police save man trapped in car, teetering on edge - September 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Sharpsburg police officers are credited with saving a driver's life after his car teetered over a retaining wall.

Police said the driver, in his early 70s, had a mechanical error in his car causing it to accelerate.

The driver, according to witnesses, crossed from one parking lot, across Main Street and into his own business lot where it went over a retaining wall.

"It was terrible because he came across and couldn't stop," said witness Diane Boberg.

Boberg called 911 and captured the lifesaving moments on her phone.

Sharpsburg officers Brian Hoebel and Nikki Mautino did not waste any time on scene.

They saw the car was balancing only by the front bumper, which was resting on a minivan below the retaining wall.

Officer Hoebel climbed into the back seat while Officer Mautino stabilized him, holding on to his belt.

"I told him to lay the seat down flat so I could get him out the back," said Hoebel. "Nikki held on to my belt as I climbed in the back seat we had him put the seat down. I told him to roll over on his stomach and crawl towards us. Once he got his hands around my neck and I got his belt, then Nikki pulled me and I pulled him and out he came."

"I think they're great. I think they do their job. They're here to protect and serve and that's exactly what they did," said Boberg.

Four workers killed at construction site in Vizag - September 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

VISAKHAPATNAM: Four workers died after a mud wall at a construction site collapsed at VIP Road in the city on Thursday morning. According to the police, the four workers were working on construction of the retaining wall when a huge pile of mud collapsed, trapping all of them.

The police were able to unearth all four bodies of the construction workers from the debris after a four-hour search. The deceased include two persons from the neighbouring state of Odisha and one each from Srikakulam and the city.

As per the preliminary investigations, police said that water was seeping through the mud wall and the construction workers had noticed it, but continued with their work. However, subsequently the mud fell on the construction workers, who were engaged in bar-bending work at the site. There were nine other construction workers at the site during the time of the incident but they had a lucky escape as were working in another part of the same site.

La Quinta residents and firefighters prepare for another storm - September 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    LA QUINTA, Calif. -

Jaclyn Underwood of La Quinta is still picking up the pieces from last weeks storm that destroyed a retaining wall in her backyard sending a foot of mud into her home.

"So the next time it comes down it will hit the house and probably break the windows and go all inside the house instead of just muddy water," said Underwood.

With rain in the forecast, she tells us she's praying it doesn't happen again.

"That's about all we can do because we can't put a retaining wall up there in a couple of days," Underwood added.

Cal Fire Batallion Chief, Rick Griggs, says they're ready for whatever weather strikes next.

"We're prepared for it," said Griggs. "This station is prepared for performing water rescues 24/7, 365 days a year, staffed, trained."

Fire Station 33 in Palm Desert is one of two in Riverside County that has a trained water rescue team that can perform swift water rescues anywhere in the valley.

"And their dedicated mission is for water rescue," added Griggs. "They do have all the equipment, tools, protective equipment to make that."

Each member of the team goes through a five day rescue training program and is re-certified every three years. Their skills were put to the test in a September storm.

Western Ave. shut down for retaining wall work - September 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

COVINGTON, Ky. -- The main entrance to Devou Park could be reopened by the end of the year if crews can repair a retaining wall that collapsed in March in time.

Great Lakes Construction will have to shut down Western Avenue to through traffic to accommodate the project.

Mud and trees spilled downhill onto Devou Drive (formerly N. Park Road) and Western Avenue on March 13 when 70-year-old walls gave way.

Local traffic will still have access and the closure will last four to six weeks. Signs have already been erected in the affected areas.

Work would take about 160 days.

The project includes: > Replacing about 400 feet of wall on Devou Drive and 450 feet on Western Avenue. > Replacing a collapsed stone sewer pipe above Western Avenue.

The wall on Western Avenue will be weighed down with bedrock.

Dirt wall in Lowell community is a nuisance but how will it be fixed? - September 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A sloping dirt wall towering over a portion of a Lowell retirement community has been deemed a public nuisance by a city code enforcement officer.

But months after the topic was first broached by town officials and years after the developer went out of business, questions still remain. How much will it cost to fix? And will the town foot the bill?

Magnolia Place on Owens Court in Lowell was built in 2001 by Evergreen Development Group of Lowell Inc. The first townhomes went up without a problem. But after a second phase began in 2010 the developer went out of business, according to town officials, and work stopped at the development.

This year, the N.C. Department of Revenue suspended the corporation.

    Wall worries

The dirt wall has long has residents worried

Its nerve-wracking, said David Turner, whose home borders the wall. If we get a few more storms like we had the other night, then were really in danger.

Concerned residents approached Lowell officials early this year to see what could be done. Lowell City Manager Al Greene called the situation sticky, considering the problem was on private property.

City Council voted in July to change a rule to allow the city to step in and deem the wall a public nuisance. Since then, the city of Lowell has hired an engineer to assess the danger of the wall.

According to an engineer with Terracon Consultants, the wall could be considered dangerous to the residents closest to it, including Turner. The engineer recommended immediate repairs.
