An overseas businessman visiting Hamilton has died in an accidental fall.
Police say the 32-year-old man was found unconscious with head injuries about 1am on Friday in Hilllsborough Terrace, Hamilton, after falling down a steep bank and over a five-metre retaining wall onto the roadway.
The death was initially treated as suspicious but police said after they had examined the scene that the death was an accident.
The coroner will be advised of the death and the man's name will be released when next-of-kin are informed.
The man was an overseas visitor and was in New Zealand on business but police did not say where he was from.
A St John ambulance crew attended but were unable to save the man who died at the scene.
Hillsborough Terrace is part of a walkway on the Waikato River and is near the city centre.

A motorist who drove his car into the side of a house, leaving it wedged nose-down against a wall, has vowed never to get behind the wheel again.
Andrew Hawthorn, 65, was trying to find his way out of a car park in Buckfastleigh but instead sped through a garden fence and over a retaining wall.
He had to be rescued by firefighters from his vertical vehicle which became wedged nose-down between the wall and the side of a property.
He told magistrates in Torquay who banned him from driving for 20 months, I will probably never drive again, it seems like the right move to me.
The incident happened on February 8.
The court was told Hawthorne had been for a lunchtime drink in a number of Buckfastleigh pubs when he decided to get into his car.
A witness told police he appeared to be muttering to himself and walking slightly unsteadily towards his Honda Jazz.
He was seen to drive towards the exit of the car park on Mardle Way but instead of leaving safely by the usual route drove through a fence and over the retaining wall.
The car was left vertical between the garden wall and a block of flats.

ROGERSVILLE West Greene School Board opened proposals from contractors Thursday to rebuild the failed retaining wall at the new elementary center.
The board solicited proposals under an emergency provision to rebuild the 760-foot-long wall behind the new school after it was discovered collapsed the morning of Nov. 7.
Proposals were received from two companies: Burchick Construction Co. of Pittsburgh and Brayman Construction Corp. of Saxonburg.
The proposals will be reviewed by the districts construction manager, Aecom, formerly URS, and a contract will be awarded based on the best value method of bidding, said Ron Miller of URS.
The companies proposals will be evaluated based on factors including the companies qualifications, approach to the project, experience and fees, Miller said.
The board may be ready to award a contract for the project at its building and grounds committee meeting Thursday.
During the pre-board meeting, Donald R. Green, a geotechnical specialist with Michael Baker International, gave an update on the design of the new retaining wall.

TEMPORARY traffic lights have been erected on the A72 road west of Peebles after deterioration to a retaining wall was discovered.
The westbound lane of the road will be closed at Neidpath from today (Friday 6 February) for safety reasons.
This will allow the wall to be assessed by Scottish Borders Council (SBC) and determine the extent of the deterioration.
Following this assessment, the Council will develop options and identify costs of repairing the wall.
At present, there are no timescales on how long the lane closure will be in operation, with further information available after the assessment of the wall has taken place.
However, the Council does recognise the inconvenience to drivers and is working to resolve this issue as soon as possible.
