Truck jumps over retaining wall, lands on tracks, gets hit by train; driver OK - February 8, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

A tractor-trailer rig that ran off State Route 14 near Skamania Thursday afternoon was struck by a freight train but the truck's driver was not injured.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the 2006 Kenworth truck was eastbound on SR 14 about 12:40 p.m. when the driver, Rasul A. Tedorov, 39, of Vancouver, tried to adjust his electronic navigational gear. While doing so, his truck ran off the south side of the road near mile post 55 and hit a rock retaining wall.

The truck then went over the top of the wall and dropped about 10 feet onto the railroad tracks that run parallel to the highway. The truck landed on its side with Tedorov still inside.

While Tedorov was trying to find his cell phone, the truck -- which was not carrying a load in its trailer -- was struck by an eastbound BNSF freight train, which was carrying lumber.

While Tedorov was not injured, the collision caused the fuel tanks on his truck to rupture and the Washington state Department of Ecology was called to the scene to help clean up the environmental hazard.

WSP reported that Tedorov was accused of second-degree negligent driving.

Bus, sedan hit Vallejo retaining wall in accident, drivers hurt - February 7, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

A school bus and a white Acura sedan struck a retaining wall Tuesday night, injuring both drivers, the California Highway Patrol officers said.

At about 9:20 p.m., CHP officers were dispatched to a report of a collision between a school bus and a sedan on Highway 29, causing both vehicles to strike a retaining wall lining the westbound Highway 37 onramp.

Witnesses told officers that the driver of the Acura was traveling northbound on Highway 29 and ran a red light, before hitting the Michael's Transportation bus, which was making a left turn from Highway 37 off-ramp.

The collision then forced both vehicles to drive into the retaining wall, officers said. The bus was not carrying any passengers.

The bus driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

Firefighters had to extricate the Acura driver, who was trapped inside his car. He momentarily lost consciousness, and was transported to an area trauma center as a precaution, CHP officers said.

The accident is under investigation. No one was cited at the scene.

Who’s going to fix the retaining wall? - February 6, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

DIXON The city is arguing that it is not responsible for a retaining wall that collapsed last week at the Old Lee County Courthouse.

A portion of the 3-foot-tall wall collapsed in Wednesdays rain, forcing the city sidewalk around the courthouse to be closed. Debris, which included some 300- to 400-pound stones, was cleared by city workers Monday, City Engineer Shawn Ortgiesen said.

Now Ortgiesen awaits a response from the Illinois Department of Transportation on who is responsible for paying for cleanup and maintenance.

An agreement when the wall was built about 20 years ago states the city is responsible to maintain appurtenances, or accessories around the sidewalk. The agreement also said IDOT is responsible for any design or construction flaws, leaving responsibility in question.

Ortgiesen, Lee County Board Chairman Rick Ketchum, Chris Henkel, county zoning officer and a representative from Illinois Department of Transportation met Tuesday to discuss the wall.

The big question is whether the wall was built properly, Ketchum said of the discussion.

Ortgiesen wrote a letter to IDOT making the argument it was a design or construction flaw on the state agencys part.

I want to get their thoughts on it, before the city spends any money on it, he said.
