KUALA LUMPUR: A 50 metre-long retaining wall collapsed during heavy rain at the site of a bungalow construction in Taman Nusa Tropika, Ukay Perdana today.

A motorist passing the area, Belinda Muhamed Hassan, 38, said it happened about 3pm while she was returning home to Bukit Antarabangsa.

"It was raining heavily. While passing the location, I saw the retaining wall at the bungalow house which was under construction suddenly collapsed and there was a loud noise.

"Luckily, the wall did not collapse on the road," she said when contacted by Bernama.

Belinda said she also saw workers at the site scurrying for safety.

She said the incident caused traffic congestion in the area as part of the road was covered with dirt and debris, as well as water from a pipe, which burst, nearby.

A check by Bernama at the location, saw workers at the construction site clearing the area.

Attempts to contact the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council were futile.

Union Pacific coal train at Squaw Creek showing new retaining wall
Monday, February 18, 2013, 9:51 AM. Riverside Drive in Ames, Iowa, was about four feet from being undermined by Squaw Creek when the city decided that a retaining wall was in order. It appears to be almost complete now except for some landscaping, as can be seen in the foreground of this video showing an eastbound Union Pacific coal train crossing the bridge over Squaw Creek. Just after this train passed, I could hear the bell on the engine of a westbound train approaching, but it turned out to be a couple of yard engines bringing a few cars to back onto the siding of Skei Coal and Salt just east of Grand Avenue.

Plastering of rocks abutting the wall forms part of project

The retaining wall constructed by the Sri Durga Malleswara Swamivarla Devasthanam is again in news, as the temple authorities have taken up works to strengthen it.

The engineering experts have noticed cracks in the wall. The concrete slab on the top of the wall, called levelling pad, has sunk by 50 cm.

The top layer will be removed shortly and re-laid. The authorities will also take up plastering of the rocks abutting the wall to avoid weathering and sliding, sources say. Cracks had developed at several portions of the retaining wall on the ghat road. The extended portion of the road also sank at several points two years ago. The appearance of cracks in the masonry of the 40-metre-high retaining wall had triggered panic among devotees.

About 20 to 25 cement concrete blocks of the wall came off just before Dasara festivities in 2010. The officials then took up nailing of the blocks to prevent buckling.

Subsequently, many experts inspected the wall and suggested corrective measures.

The State government constituted a committee to study the structural stability of the wall as there were apprehensions that the structure was not stable. The committee recently submitted its report and suggested various measures, including nailing of the wall.

The wall was constructed in four tiers and a geo-synthetic layer had been laid at the end of every 0.6 meters of the wall from the ground level.

It had been consolidated with soil and rock anchoring was done wherever needed. The construction of the wall was taken up after the widening of the ghat road following a stampede in 2008.
